Reciting the Outdoor Code

At each of our Troop meetings, following the Pledge of Allegiance, we recite the Scout Law and Scout Oath at full attention giving the Scout Sign. Recently we added reciting the Outdoor Code as well. Question: Is it within BSA protocol to give the Scout Sign while reciting the Outdoor Code? Thanks to any and all who can provide definite clarification.

My son asked me the exact same thing last week (weird, huh?). I told him that I did not know an "official" answer, but my feeling was 'what would it hurt?'. I don't see anything wrong with it. It is a form of an oath, and it is a part of scouting.

I don't see why not. It is a promise, and a statement of fundamental Scouting principles (though I notice it doesn't actually mention Scouting), and saying while giving the Scout sign adds to the solemnity of the words being spoken.

You know, this gives me an idea.

 

I think perhaps adding the Outdoor Code or Wilderness Pledge to hikes and campout would be a good idea. I think the troop opening has enough stuff as is, but adding it to outdoor activities sounds like a good idea.
