  1. Hi all, I'm in the process of being registered in Position 92U (Unit College Scouter Reserve), and I'd like to know if there is a patch that is worn for this position, or since it is a new position, if anyone knows if a new patch is in the works from National supply. Thanks for your help, Ditro
  2. I got a crazy one: You don't become an Eagle Scout until you are presented with your badge. Do I even have to state the truth??? Thank God only a couple people that I know believed that (until the rest of us corrected them). Ditro
  3. Thanks for all the replies. I'm developing a way to fold the troop flag so that the flour-de-lis in the center of the flag will show on top. I'm going to borrow one of our troop flags and try it out. If it works I might post it here.
  4. Hey, Does anyone know if there is a proper procedure for folding a troop flag in a flag ceremony? I am an SPL and I think it would be neat to fly our troop flag under the American Flag during campouts, but I dont know how to fold it when we retire the colors. Anybody know?
  5. I don't want to be a pessimist but badge magic is simple and takes a lot less time than sewing. Last week I moved all my patches to my new uniform with badge magic (which isn't the "new" uniform but a gift my parents bought for me because I'm getting my Eagle rank - before they knew of the new one). It took altogether about 15 - 20 min. However, I did sew a satchel-like bag for Indian lore, which I felt very satisfied with when I was done. So I guess sewing's not totally lost among Scouts (just talkin about Boy Scouts . Ditro
  6. Well hopefully when they come out with v2 they make them longer. Ditro
  7. Scouts always used to wear their Class A's/field uniform whenever they went on an outing. The uniform was made for that up until about 25 years ago. And with the new uniform they are trying to bring back that idea. When my dad was in Scouts in the 60's his troop wore their full uniform in the field. And, judging by candid photographs, they managed to keep their shirts in their pants. Like Beavah said, if you're running around playing a game or climbing a tree it may get untucked. Just tuck it back in after. Getting the uniform dirty on an outing is not disrespect. Weari
  8. Kind of funny how its such a problem for some parents to have their son in uniform. My grandfather was kicked out of Scouts because he did not have a uniform (which he could not afford). As for my troop we used to come in full uniform (minus the sash) to meetings. But then our new scoutmaster allowed uls to come in our activity t-shirts. Somehow people translated that into "come in whatever you want." Now, even though we held a vote to lay down guidelines in which we would wear our activity uniform (overwhelming majority) its still hard to get everyone to comply, even those who voted
  9. As a 16-year-old Life Scout, I ask why do we have to have girls in the program? One of the reasons I like Boy Scouting is because when my troop is together we can just be guys without worrying about what any girls may think of us. Is the meaning of equality for men and women coming to the point where we remove all of the characteristics that make us who we are? Boys are boys, girls are girls. If you want co-ed outdoor adventure join Venturing or camp staff, which I have nothing against. But, please, keep the BOY in BOY Scouting. Ditro(This message has been edited by ditro)
  10. "Mr. Mazzuca said the Scouts would also work to diversify its ranks." What do you think he means by that? Is that about Tenderfoot - Eagle or something along the lines of the operation levels (district, Council, etc.)
  11. I've never seen a TV show devoted to Scouting. Maybe it'll get more boys interested.
  12. We reserve a few of our meetings to introduce Webelos to our troop. We send invitations out to packs in the area, and for one meeting we show the Webelos different scout skills and tell them about our outings while our adult leaders meet with the parents in another area and discuss the troop program. Sometimes a Scout is brought in to discuss his Eagle Project or his role in the troop to the parents. We usually have one meeting for only the Webelos of our associated pack, and then another meeting for Webelos from other packs. Ditro

    The new uniform.

"WHY are new belts being developed to go over the ones in our new pants??" I'm going to guess the belt is for the canvas pants. "...the loops would match the colors of the service star backs." Maybe they'll change the backings too?

    The new uniform.

Yes, I think we should let the transition happen by itself. I myself am not sure if I will get a new shirt becouse my current one fits fine. My question is more along the lines of: will you have your troops wear it outdoors? My troop doesn't wear the current "class A" except indoors and at ceremonies and parades, so I'm wondering how this "transition of usage" will take place.(This message has been edited by ditro)

    The new uniform.

The reason why I asked is because I'm the SPL in my troop and I don't know know how we should go about the uniform change. Should it be mandatory? Should there be vote on when to wear it? What do you think is going to happen in your troops?
  16. There is the problem that todays youth have more activities than in years past. So, where you might have had full patrol participation for an outing you now have 1/3 - 2/3 of the troop. I support the patrol method, but some people think it is no longer practical for some situations. My troop still tries to use it when we have enough participation, though. If any of you were/are Scouts, did your troops successfully use the patrol method?

    The new uniform.

"Then National has done its job and given our youth a uniform which will meet the test of a campout or hike." If National did do a good job, would any of you wear it camping?
  18. Like other people said, it not Wood Badge (or any one thing) that causes a lack of understanding in the patrol method. Take a look at the Scoutmaster's handbook and you'll find very limited info on the patrol method. In the 1970's version, there are pages and pages devoted to planning, competition, and the logic behind patrols. Not everybody takes Wood badge, but every SM and ASM should be able to know and understand the nature of the patrol method. The new uniform.

Since this is going to be an outdoor uniform, does anybody think their units are going to wear it outdoors? Are you going to require a uniform change or just let the old one fade out over time? Based on my troop's non-enthusiastic response to it ("oh great, does this mean I have to buy a new uniform?"), I'm guessing my troop is going to let people buy it as they need it. Ditro

    The new uniform.

From the picture it looks like both long and short sleeves have the pocket.

    The new uniform.

I just want to say that the new (or perhaps resurrected) idea of "outdoor functionality" of the uniform is great. But, really, it's going to be quite a huge undertaking to go back to wearing the uniform during just about every activity. I personally don't mind, but boys in general think about a uniform as something that they would like to wear as few times as possible. They associate it with uniform inspections and formal courts of honor. I really don't think the advertising in that brochure is going to make a scout eager to throw on his uniform to go camping. As far as they are concerned

    New Uniform?

I hope it's a multi-use uniform. I think that when Boy Scouts do Scouting activities, they should be identifiable as Boy Scouts, especially when they are in public. I agree with srisom. Maybe we should bring back the former way of doing things.
  23. Ditro

    New Uniform?

I hope it's a uniform that can be worn while camping and other outdoor activites; the current field uniform is much more of a dress uniform than an actual "field" uniform.
  24. I just got a pair and they are a little long. Unfortunately the zippers at the bottom of the legs make it more difficult to hem them than the old scout pants.
