  1. The $500 was a donation specifically toward the trailer lettering that came about because a last minute thought and action had a donation bucket with a 'request' sitting on the check in table.

     

    Its not a dumb question on the Scout Parent, Basement. Its a new crossover parent I was trying to get on board registered as Scouter on the Troop side. His wife is going to do the Committee side. He is going on all the campouts and we really need things like for the tour plan and 2 deep leadership.

     

    Someone else suggested the Scout Parent option and I'm thinking that really isn't the best way to go. Is there a pro and con on the Scout Parent versus the registered committee member, Basement and Qwazse other than no vote on the committee? Does registering as a Scout Parent tend to put them in a no involvement mode for the long or short term?

  2. YEP on the always learning even when we've been Scouters for years. New positions, challenges and planning activities teaches us that.

     

    One question.. do you have Committee meetings Mark? Pack meetings? Are you happy where you are? Sounds like you are great as a den leader but everyone else is not doing their job and making it frustrating for you which takes away from the Scouting experience for you and your son. Wouldn't it be better to merge with a stronger Pack then you can do leadership (den leader) properly without all the extra baggage?

     

    No one mentioned UC (Unit Commissioner. UC acts a coach, mentor, guide and etc. to the CM. Mine has been working with me all along providing me with wonderful help. Sounds like your CM is taking the easy way out and letting you plan HIS meetings. I'd pick a different night and place and take your Bears. Two can still have FUN... *winka

     

     

  3. Lately things have been in a constant conflict with the actions of other Scouters and Committee Members in their approaches and decisions. Some of their decisions made are not along the lines of walking the walk of BSA aims, methods, oath or law that leaves me flounder that this happens.

     

    For example, last night forms for summer camp were filled out incorrectly stating that the Troop is paying part of a scout's fee when the reality is its their scout account so the scout is paying for it not the troop yet. They are also asking for campership which i don't have a problem with but forms should be filled out correctly.

     

    They want to pay less money so we go through this 'trailer' issue to pay Maine when we live in another state. They want to do Scout Parent over paying more money to National yet they are in the BSA program. Falsify the doctor's signature on the medical form. State the have the required car insurance coverage yet leaving me with doubts that they really do and they are carpooling other Scouts. Waiving certain requirements and/or marking them as done. Smoking in front of the Scouts. I can go on and on.

     

    One of them is an experienced Scouter like myself and I'm dumbstruck. Anyone else experienced this? What really bothers me is the other experienced Scouter's actions is working against the Troop's long term future in being able to recruit and its starting to a ripple effect where the rest are following his words/ actions. What do I do or say and suggestions on approaches or your own experiences? Is this common?.. *shaking head at loss

  4. Plan FUN and HANDS ON meetings for your Cubs. Cubs really LOVE doing over sitting and listening. Be creative! I'm very crafty plus a woodworker so I made many things that were long lasting that could be showcased in one's home. Clocks, picture frames, pin holder frame, family tree collage for Heritage, centerpieces for Blue and Gold. I also did some fun different things like visit the vet, the local dump, do rockets, and etc. Scouts have an enormous amount of curiosity and love going 'behind the scene' to see the workings of things they see everyday.

     

    When you are planning see if you can do multiples like a beltloop at the same time as a rank advancement. It saves work on you and encourages more interest in the scouts while broadening their horizons.

    I don't even bother to spending money for that magic stuff.

    I googled online for a way to teach the scouts how to do their own since parents are too busy these days after seeing a comment in one of the boards here. I really liked the idea of it being the scouts responsibility and now carry thread, needles and stapler in our mailbox. Pins have a tendency to stick a scout which is why I liked the stapler method. Stapling it beforehand holds it in perfect place for sewing. Try it on the nylon and you'll quickly see how difficult the sleeves are.

  6. Qwazse.. That's a thought on the linguistic cues.

     

    For me its body language cues that are telling and very confusing when people don't realize what they say doesn't match with their body language like telling someone you welcome them yet have your arms crossed across your chest which signals just the opposite, you don't welcome them.

    One thing to be VERY aware of is tenure. Most of these cannot overlap tenure with another knot award. If he has done all the requirements including attending Roundtable and chairing events he probably earned Cub Scout Den Leader and Cub Scouter for his first 3 years of service without knowing it. I would count next year toward Webelos Den Leader. Thus in the 4 years of service he would have 3 knots.

     

    Basement.. depends on how Roundtable is offered. Mine was so good as it followed the Cub Scout program themes and presented an idea for the next month that helped me loads in having to come up with my own idea. We even got 'beads' for attendance that just kinda rubbed off to attend more.. *grins

  8. Glad to know Basement you weren't in uniform but I have to say I was SHOCKED at what you described that goes on. I know one of our Council dinners we have to make sure NOT to wear our uniforms because of that little alcohol regulations rule. If I was in any of the situations you described, I'd be embarrassed and leave rather than suffer through it.

     

    I'm right now having to deal with cigarette smoking regulations and a new parent... *sighs

     

     

  9. Find out about your district Roundtable. I found mine very helpful in program planning.

     

    My first thought in reading yours is how big is your den? Six is a good number but no more than 8. Since sports are giving you problem, I'd get away from it and gear your den meetings toward hands on activities where the scout has to do their own yet follow you for directions. The Bear book should give you plenty of ideas plus google BSA Cub Scout program helps. I'm not sure if they still print those any more but they were really helpful during my first tour as a Den Leader.

     

    If you have a very large den that can't be split, don't be afraid to tell parents they must do a rotation shift where they MUST attend a den meeting to provide adult help. If the parent can't attend, tell them its THEIR job to find a replacement. Do contract sheet of rules for scouts and make parents sign it. List the punishment on it. Scouting is not a babysitting service so that contract will help them change their ways quick by putting ya all on the same page.

    What's wrong with Hooters? Scout uniform and alcohol can NOT be together! You know that thing called 'Regulations'.

     

    As for the word I... The posting was referencing back to being able to find trails in my area which I stated 'I' can find plenty of them locally. True the boys decide but my group probably doesn't even know most of them unless they are connected to their local park. I get it plenty Basement that its Patrol Method and boys decisions. We start our training for the next 6 weeks tomorrow.

  11. Industrial Arts is long gone 5yearScouter. Teaching certificates label it now called Technology Education or Tech Ed for short. Tech Ed is NOT to be confused with computers which is now Information Technology or IT for short... *winka

     

    OSHA does do high school level safety training courses in many VoPro (Vocational/ Technical Schools) or BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services). Some are equipment geared while others are over all safety in certain fields like Carpentry, Electrician, and etc.

  12. To kind of sum up knots is they are 'service' awards for different leadership positions with a few odd ones throw in.

     

    There is no Oakleaf either. (Never having heard of it, I had to google to figure out what it was.)

     

    What Scouting positions has your husband done?

  13. I'll bet it gave them pause ScoutNut. Got a Southern gentleman who always calls any gal 'Sugar'. He knows he's come North when gals give him dirty looks... *laughing

     

    Some habits are just so hard to break and done without thinking. Isn't 'til you move to a different location that turns things on oneself... *grins at the possible outcomes

  14. I would refrain from getting the backpacking one. One doesn't wear it backpacking anyways as they wear Tees. We never even packed our uniform in the backpack because of their weight. (this might change with the new uniforms so please refrain from killing me on this remark.. *grins)

     

    The new backpacking ones are TERRIBLE for adding on patches as they slide against the patches even if one staples before hand. This will make it tough if one is pushing scouts to do their own sewing. Prefer the polyster/ cotton blend any day.. *smiles
