Thank you all. The feedback on setting it up was well noted, as was the cost. We are now looking at Flipgrid as well. I hear they are going to address virtual on the National call next Thursday. I am going to wait to hear that outcome and recommendations.
But, thank you again for the input, it is appreciated.
I have used flip grids for numerous assignments. It is extremely limited and is nothing like canvas. Plus, it limits the recording time unless you pay for a plan for the class. I personally do not like flip grid as many scouts may dislike recording themself.

Brian, just curious, will your college or its home state require you to produce a recent negative covid-19 test and/or quarantine for 14 days on campus?
I’m going to a state next to mine, where there is no quarantine period for my state. Every student has to produce a negative test before returning to campus though. I believe one of the residence halls is now the “quarantine dorm.” It’s a small college, so that is why they’re able to open without problems.

Sounds like a Venture Crew or Explorer Post to me.... Make it happen ! Even by ZOOM....
I unfortunately will be moving into college (out of state) in August. I actually don’t even think there are any posts or crews around my area, which is interesting.

It’s widely used in colleges, I prefer it over Google Classroom. I’m currently a college student. I’ve never had a problem with the conferences, it’s easy to use, and overall reliable. But, please be aware that the free version of Canvas misses a decent amount of features.
I’m not too sure how it would work as a virtual scouting event, depending on what the event is. -

Hey ItsBrian,
Did you ever get to camp this summer?
Unfortunately, the entire summer was canceled. I do ride on a volunteer rescue squad and currently in a EMT program to be nationally certified, so I am staying active in healthcare.

You can fundraise anytime after 2 things are approved.
1. Project proposal workbook
2. Fundraising application/form (this may need council signature if raising over a certain amount, the form tells you how many signatures you need) -

Been fighting that battle for years. "We don't teach merit badge classes, we counsel merit badge sessions". (And, don't call any of it HOMEWORK!)
Camp I work at refuses to say teach, we can only say instruct. We aren’t teachers, we’re instructors.

Still awaiting more details. There will be no merit badges and it sounds like the troops stay together and work together all week. No specifics yet.
Maybe you’ll be interested in the virtual academy thing they plan on doing?
I’m in PP as well.

Pennsylvania Dutch Council (PA) cancelled all summer camps, but if restrictions loosen, may allow individual or unit camping.
-
Hawk Mountain Council (PA) cancelled all camps
New Birth of Freedom Council (PA) cancelled all camps
Patriots Path Council (NJ) is keeping one of two camps closed. Day camp will also be held but modified.

That seems like an underestimate or an out of date count. This past Friday saw a bunch of cancellations.
Agreed, May 15th was a decision day for many camps.
The council I work for was suppose to decide by then, but we still have yet to heard.

I just watched the ZOOM meeting for our Webelos Resident / Cub Resident Camp starting June 7. Circle Ten Council. I was not impressed with their preparedness.
Many questions answered with.. "we don't know how that will work, but we are still looking at it".
They suggested everyone bring their own hand sanitizer, although I dont know where to buy that.
We can't enforce social distancing with kids, so its on you to take care of your kids.
"Mask" was added to the equipment list.
There was a national webinar last week regarding CDC guidelines, camp preparedness, needed supplies, etc. National is being very supportive and offering many resources.
Your council is probably waiting for the official CDC, state, and local guidelines.- 1

I am only a Cubmaster. What do I do about a Committee Chair doing a half-ass job in their role?
Committee Chair has expired YPT
2 new Committee members this year (after Jan) don't have applications turned in, one never received an application.
Committee chair wants things done a certain way, but then never follows through on execution. Things are talked about and then never followed through.
I understand this is a weird year, but we havent talked about a planning meeting or budget meeting and we are just about 1/2 way through May.
Say they must step down if they do not complete YPT quickly? YPT is a requirement to hold the position I believe.

I taught a First Aid class once at a summer camp, and I’m involved in the medical field. “Show” can also be interpreted by demonstrating without doing.
Pretend it is a scenario at a First Aid rally, if your district has those. Anyone can be a victim, a parent, sibling, etc. For a snake bite on the leg, you wouldn’t actually wash the bite, you would grab the supplies needed then say and do something like:
Rescuer tells the victim sit-up and prepares for the treatment. They physically set up their water bottle, some kind of cloth, and soap.
Rescuer verbally or physically applies their PPE (gloves, imaginary if needed) then starts their treatment. This is where they can demonstrate with out actually doing it.
Rescuer: “I’m going to take the water bottle and get the cloth wet then soapy.”
(They do so without actually doing it, but instead demonstrates)
Rescuer: “Now, I’m going to tell the victim what I am doing and start to wash the bite.”
(Demonstrates cleaning the bite)
Then so and so on.
I hope I explained this well, I can’t think of any other way by typing. They basically demonstrate everything without actually using the soap and water.

Ask your Council Health Supervisor.
I planned on it, but I wanted to see what other councils were doing before asking.

I saw my council is increasing the amount of medical personnel on staff at their health lodges. Has anyone else’s council added staff to their lodges?
I’m suppose to be the only health officer for a camp out of my council, and I’ve heard nothing yet about increasing the staff there.
I was wondering if anyone else heard news about their camps, or if mine was one of few.

My council just officially canceled all June day and resident camps. Currently planning on having events in July. I’m still skeptical of that happening either but I guess they have to plan as though they can.
Do you mind telling us the state?

Not familiar of what the YMCA is doing but I think there could be some hiccups with this. Are you saying open a council property to non scout families?
Then you have the argument of who exactly is deemed essential. I work for a trucking company and am having to work from home to ensure freight keeps moving. Everyone who has a job is technically essential as their family probably depends on that job income.
If its a BSA camp are we still going to follow YPT rules? Will adults be required to attend with camper? That defeats the purpose of it being a day care. Parents already think BSA stands for Babysitters of America(this is a myth we dispel at the 1st meeting).
Scouts could provisional, just like a normal summer camp. I’m sure there would be a decent amount of adults to volunteer to “oversee patrols.” This actually could be beneficial. Let’s say patrols were made up from various different troops. It would lead to scouts having to get to know each other and come together as a patrol.

Here in MA, facemasks are a state mandate whenever out in public, for anyone age over the age of 2. The signal from the Gov is that will be with us through the summer, and possibly even into the school year. I fully expect it will be a requirement for camps.
The same for NJ, but I can’t see it feasible for a camp.

I was just saying tonight that all the rumored adjustments we have to make for resident camp, I can't imagine what would need to be done at cub camp. Hard sometimes keeping 13 year old from grabbing at and wrestling with each other- can't imagine how that goes with the younger kids. And trying to get them to keep their masks on and not touch them/adjust them 20,000 times a day.
I really can’t imagine campers, or even staff, being forced to wear a mask for the entire day. Staff having to wear one every day for the entire summer will definitely ruin spirit and the camp experience. I don’t believe this would happen, if camps open.

I have questions on how well these camps are going to do getting enough supplies to do all this disinfecting and sanitizing, especially as most people can't get their hands on it right now. Figure if you were doing meals in shifts, you really aren't accomplishing much if you don't add time in between to sanitize for the next group.
I spent a little time time today sifting through some of the requirements for typical summer MBs we see from our kids. Either if we were to go through council camp or go off and run our own thing, there are some requirements I struggle with how you could do them in "social distancing". First Aid for example, I'd so much rather things are hands on rather than lecture of "theoretical first aid", but I can't see having the kids pawing at tech other doing bandages and such. Archery/rifle shooting a good instructor will try to lean in and help the kid who is struggling sighting their rifle- can't see that happening much right now. Handicrafts, you really would need staff to watch everything like a hawk to wipe down the handsaw after one scout uses it and another picks it up. My head started to swim at how many MBs would probably be partials versus completes.
American Red Cross is still holding First Aid/CPR classes while social distancing, so I’m sure BSA can figure something out.

It is a council camp, and I was assured of the 100% safety after I expressed my concerns and I have no intention of attending this year. Certainly not in June.
May I ask what state? They aren’t waiting a little bit longer to be confidence?? 😂😂

I’m just throwing this out there, but could a local nonprofit not have a website? The local organization that charters us did not have a website, so I made one and it increased hall rentals. (this was not my eagle project)
It could show leadership by having scouts help organize and condense information and pictures. This would be on top of the constant communication with the beneficiary, even more than a typical project.
Just throwing it out there. May not seem like a huge leadership role, but it’s the only technology based one I can think of. -

Our council needs to to move beyond "planning" to have camp and give a firm YES or NO. Though honestly a firm YES is unlikely, so we may go on our own.
I wish the councils around me would decide by now. I guess they aren’t taking any chances to lose revenue.

New York Attorney General Sues N.R.A. and Seeks Its Closure

I’m sorry, but I can’t believe you just compared the NRA’s operations to something like Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood actually operates as a non-profit and uses their funds as a non-profit is defined as. The NYAG is not (in this case) going after them for being a gun organization, instead, as a corrupted non-profit that is not using funds properly. I’m sure she has some biased towards the NRA, but it clearly states she is suing due to the misuse of funds. No matter the organization, if one was misusing funds, someone would step up and sue.
*I am not aware if her claims of the NRA are true, I have not done any research to see if I believe them. This was to explain to the poster the difference.
