  1. Okay folks... military Dad here. I just got orders to Shaw AFB, Sumter/Columbia SC. I'm the current Cubmaster in my pack, but I'm not looking to take on that role again...lol (perhaps Den Leader...but also just happy to be a Pack Dad)

I'm looking to see if anyone knows of an active Cub Scout pack in the Sumter or Columbia SC area for my son and I. My current pack camps at least 3-4 times a year, has earned Summertime Activity 3 years running, Journey to Excellence (gold) at least the last 2 years, etc. My son just finished his Wolf badge and earned 1 gold/5 silver arrow points at same time (just trying to illistrate how active his den really is)

Does anyone have any suggestions for an active Pack? It's going to be hard enough to up-root my whole family.. I really don't want my son to lose his scouting spirt and drive by moving to a new area and finding out the Pack/Den isn't active enough to hold his interest.

  2. I'm in my 2nd Pack, and was invovled with 2 Scout troops before (1 as a Scout, the other as an ASM) We always had either a trailer or scout-shed. A small room can store a LOT of stuff...and while I have also seen a rise in the theft of Scout Trailers over the recent years...if the Pack/Troop insures it...you will usually be okay. (if the worst was to happen)

    However, in order:

    1) Have a storage room inside the building

    2) Have a Scout Shed with lock

    3) Trailer (Well Secured, with 2-3 different locking devices and lots of Identifiying marks

    4) Storage at a person's home

  3. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. My biggest issue...and perhaps it's just my issue to work though...is the apparent belief by National that the Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting programs are the same, and there-fore deserve the same recognition. I have always maintained...a Tiger den-Leader has a very different job than a WEBELOS or even a Boy Scout leader...which is why I have always maintained they deserve different recognition.

In the military, if a person earns one award, it is for a certain level of effort. You don't award a different person the same award for a different level of effort. (i.e person A doesn't get a Commendation Medal for what person B gets an Achievement Medal for...at least in theory)!

So, I totally disagree with this whole system change....a Tiger Den Leader deserves to be recognized for their efforts, and have that recognition stand out from the recognitoin of a Boy Scout Leader or other Den Leader. So what if a leader starts to collect 10 different knots...it shows a level of involvement which others should want to emulate! Instead, we're now telling our leaders one is equal to the another.. which we would never do with one of the Scouts!

  4. I'm sure this subjec has been brought up somewhere in the Uniform Section...but I'm just curious.

How does everyone feel about the changes to the Leader Award Knots which came out a few months back?

I've already started to see some issues getting previously awarded knots at the scout office...and I personally don't want to wear a "knot" which I wasn't awarded. Also, there are serious changes to the requirements from the old to the new knots. (i.e. Time requirements almost doubled....)

  5. I tend to agree with everyone else.

    "Billy" hasn't earned anything.

If he actually completed all of the requirements...including his Eagle Project... how did that happen? While this is a very sad situation... I personally think it should be taken up at the State level...possibly even the National.

If the boy honestly did all of the work, and he can produce documents and scout leaders willing to testify to it..someone should consider processing the package. However, that consideration shouldn't be made below the State Level!

If the mom is so against doing the paperwork.. someone needs to find out why.

There are a few issues which need to be handled at numerous levels..

  6. I'm laughing because my old scout book is still held together with Silver Duct Tape! Pretty sure I got a new one about 2/3 through scouts...but only really remember using the one with the duct tape.

Also: I never kept the blue cards. Our MBC always kept them...I think we were given one piece after we finished, but once the advancement folks had it in the system...we never kept them.

Kinda wish I had now, so I could remember who signed off what..

  7. qwazse;

Just to clarify my points: I agree with you...the AOL is not the most important point here...

But I also wanted to ensure the boy understands...he can't ever go back and finish. Once he crosses.. (when ever that is)... the opportunity is gone for life. The same thing happens for Eagle Scout, and numerous other 'life' opportunities. AOL is often the first time a boy is forced with that decision...to put in the time/effort or walk away.

Parents often are able to explain this point to their children better... and sometimes help talk them into the little extra effort at the end.

By no means do I think it should be just awarded or signed off.

For my families part: My brother set the state record for his Eagle Scout pacakge being submitted...because he almost walked away and decided at the last minute it was worth it to him.

  8. This was a very interesting read...from everyone.

Here is my two cents...for all it's worth.

    A) Is the parent working with the child, and coordinating with the DL, or just signing it off.

    - No matter how it's being signed off, if there are questions on the authenticity of the information taught/retianed... interview the scout... allow the parent to be there, but ensure he's only allowed to give 2-3 word 'guidance' when you tell him too... (i.e. "When we did ...")

    B) Scout doesn't need to cross over with the other boys....but the desire may be there. Remind him of the importance of finishing his AOL. Remind his parents as well. This is the ONLY Cub-Scouting award which will remain with the boy for life. He'll wear it through Scouts, and later in life as an Adult knot. Many adult leaders would gladly give double the required time to go back and finish these awards.

    c) Talk to the other Den Leaders and Scout troops. See what the boy needs...and help arrange it. Make sure the parents are aware of all of the hoop-jumping you'll be doing, because it's possibly they won't appreciate it....and they need to. The Parents should be driving this train, and you just telling them where to steer it. It doesn't sound like this is the case.

I hope my toughts made sense. For our pack, we've graduated 1, and have a few more basically done. I believe 1-2 may not complete... and we're trying to push them through... but the Scout has to want this too...or everyone is workign for the wrong reasons.

I look forward to your update.

  9. Okay, as mentioned...old conversation, but I did just find it.

So, I did some internet searches and read the following color ideas for this:

    - Brown with Red Letters (matches BSA strip)

    - Black with White Letters (matches plastic nametag)

    - Green with ?? Letters (guess it's green for Boy Scouts)

Anyway.. the only picture of an embroidered name tag I can find is brown with black letters. (funny it was in my home state)

    Link: http://www.bsatroop177ok.org/newscouts

I was wondering if anyone else might have a picture of what these other name tags look like. I'd like to compare what they look like before I try to commit to altering my uniform.

  10. Interesting converstaion...I especially liked the point about no way to 'punish'

Don't Scouts have to complete a Scoutmaster Reivew and SM Conference in order to complete a rank? I know I always did.

I remember our SM refusing to sign off on one because the boy obviously wasnt conforming to the standards of Scouting, and while he was 'present,' he wasn't really participating. (he was 3rd Boy in family slated to make Eagle...perhaps he just felt he didn't need to work as hard) SM explained the issue to the boy and his father, and how he felt there could be some improvement. The boy complied, and 6 months later....the boy was signed off.

To me, the purpose of the Scout Uniform, is to be UNIFORM! It shows an ability to follow rules and conform to a group. As Scouting Leaders...we should be striving to ensure we're meeting the intent of the District and National offices. We should also help 'mentor' our Scouts on what is/is-not acceptable. The scouts themselves will also do a splendid job of peer-pressure for conformity.

Please don't misundersand me.. I'm honestly not a uniform nazi or anything...but it really does bother me when Scouts refuse to even closely follow the rules. (patches in totally wrong spots, shirt not buttoned or tucked in, (or overly small) uniform looks overly unkept/dirty/wringled)

Just some of my thoughts. I think I kinda stepped away from the original topic..

  16. In our pack, we don't use it for our program, and if the family intially paid for it, we'll renew it.

For my families part: my son and I both love to read 'most' of these.. but not all of them have very good articles.

I do believe the magazine does a good job of promoting Scouting, and helps boys stay active in the program...so for that part, I certainly see vale.

  17. I think a lot of this issue will be in how you present the situation. Bottom line however: Has Boy A completed the Arrow of Light requirements? Has Boy B? These are written and required for the program.

Now...can more be done for the boy who isn't done? Perhaps....but if he isn't done with the program requirements, I think you've answered your own question. For the boy who is done... tell him congrats and wish him well as he transitions.

PS: We had 1 boy move in Dec, while the rest are waiting until Blue & Gold.. and it's possible one or two will be finishing requirments in May/June.

  18. BDP00;

The leaders are working with a local church, who has a decon who will be teaching the Cub Scouts...and the pastor will be signing off the final completion. We've informed the parents, we're finalizing the total cost of the program (with the church) and now we're just waiting on the families who are interested in attending.

So, we're really faciliting the set up with a local church.

  19. Okay Folks, with the more modern digital age, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any free resources for the Kindle Fire? I know they have some for the iPad, but can't find any which have migrated yet.

I use "BSA on the Go" for my Android Phone, and its a GREAT App....it has all of the badges and requirements for all of the Scouting programs, etc. I'm sure we all have this type of information out there, and I'd love to be able to keep it light and handy for camping events, etc.
