  1. VMI (Virginia Military Institute) in Lexington Virginia had a similar program except it was invote only. Our troop took a tour and had this bonfire for a campfire. Best part was that evening when Keydets took us out to play capture the flag in this giant pasture, teaching us tactics and such, WE GOT THE FLAG UTIIZING THE LEFT FLANK!!!

  2. Duct Tape, Rubber Bands? BLASPHEMERS! As the Shenandoah Valley Pioneering Guru I condemn you all for not using some sort of cordage!!!

Our council is clearing out some areas in camp, creating a haven for pioneering scavengers. Bamboo is neat because of its strength that there are many more possibilities in construction, I saw a troop make a swimming pool out of bamboo using a tarp to hold the water and bamboo as a frame. I was looking at the Hurricane Districts website and they said that they "cut" a deal or something to that effect with some pine tree nursery, one of the guys in our troop did and we got some nice spars out of that

  3. Yes they can really abstain. They are allowed to abstain for that very reason. If scouts, treating the election like a joke, write in a person that isn't eligible like Johnny New Scout or Mickey Mouse, then that vote counts as well, not towards electing Mickey Mouse, but counts as a blank ballot, thus hurting a persons chance to get into the OA. good luck with your election.

  4. im not sure if it would directly say anything about saying the principles anmes, but the category is under a term called ceremonial progression. Its a long explanation regarding how much a person can know about the OA at a certain time. All call out ceremonies should technically avoid using principles names because they have not yet been inducted into the order. The number of taps also fall into this category

  5. The Jambo contingent for our council paid homage to our lodge by naming the Jambo patrols after our chapters. WE are currently debating wheter or not the lodge should make Jambo pocket flaps, available for the jambo contingent and people that wnat to help the lodge fundraise. The argumentconcerned the populairty of Jambo OA flaps? are they a big deal or are they worth doing?

  6. This thread was somewhat spun from the thread reagarding campfire fires, as far as I have heard, there arent that many camps that have a "fire-lighting skit" this would qualify as a starting skit that would be comical and in its end result light the campfire, begining the program. My personal favorite is the Dutch Coven, a mock OA call out ceremony, principals come out embodeing the OA cahracters and then perform a Counselor in Training sacrifice. Other than Eagle 1973's Indian Brave with the torch fire lighting, does any other camp have methods and ways to entertaingly light thier campfires?

  7. Eale I am actually interested in ways of lighting the fire, we do several "fire lighting" skits, such as Indiana (Name of the Couselor), who has to find the holy fire lighter, and then there is our Commisioner skit, most of the skits are getting old so anything new would be appreciated

  8. Im on staff for our councils summercamp and we do 3 campfires a week. Different program areas are responsible for campfires. Most of the time aquatics will make a decent fire, but Scoutcraft outshines all (go scoutcraft). I have read about pyramid fires aka top down fires where the fire is lit on the top of a prebuilt fire and burns down, creating a fire that will last constantly burn with out being fed for an hour and a half. I have never actually done this and I have once seen it implicated though it failed miserably. Someone lit it at the bottom thus creating an awesome 15 second bonfire. I was wondering if anyone has done this before with grreat success because i would like to try thi when camp starts back up

  9. My council is going through an ordeal about rezoning our camp. we bought this piece of land in order to build a cub scout camp but the local residents dont want it rezoned because there would be an increase of traffic. I was wondering if any other counciuls have had such disputes and if there is a way to mend the tension between locals and the camp.

  10. I work at a summer camp and am closely associated with the OA at camp. We have recentl started doing Brotherhood ceremonies during summer camp. People would signup before camp and would go through questioning on Monday, then wed have the ceremony on tuesday. This is a good chance to get the old guys and the unsure youngins to get their brotherhood, they dont have to spend a seperate weekend but just go while at camp. On Wensday we have the dance team perform for the parents campfire and then the evening is concluded with a call out ceremony. Thursday, we do a medicine bowl which is a great OA social. o also on wensday at the parent campfire we ask that all arowmen wear their sashes to the campfire. hope these ideas help
