  1. Looking for opinions, tips, stuff to watch for at Miami Valley Council Camp..Woodland Trails.
  2. RIGHT ALONG THIS TOPIC..CHICAGO AREA COUNCIL HAS VOTED TO SELL IT'S OWASSIPE SCOUT RESERVATION TO DEVELOPERS FOR 19 MIL SOMETHING
  3. BAD BAD NEWS...CHICAGO AREA COUNCIL HAS VOTED TO SELL IT'S 4800 ACRES IN WEST MICHIGAN (OWASSIPPIE SCOUT RESERVATION) TO A DEVELOPMENT GROUP THERE WAS FEAR FOR SOME TIME THEY MIGHT SELL PART OF THIS WONDERFUL SCOUTING RESOURCE BUT THE SURPRISE WAS SELLING ALL OF IT, DESPITE PROMISES TO BUY AND PRESERVE IT BY FOLKS LIKE THE WHITEHALL SSHOOL DISTRICT, NATURE CONSERVANCY, AND THE GERALD R FORD COUNCIL, THEIR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR.
  4. IN THE FIFTEEN YEARS I HAVE BEEN SCOUTMASTER I HAVE "BANNED" THE USE OF ORDINATRY PATROL NAMES AND SOME THAT HAVE SURVIVED INCLUDE... THE BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL whose flag has won 11 "best patrol flag" contests at various camps and events..with it's lighted blue light and 3 rows of small signs and logos of where it has been SIDESHOW BOB from the simsons ALAMO SCOUTS named in honor of WWII special forces group
  5. Some very nice slides can be made by making a reduction (usually about 50%) color copy of an embrodied patch. Then paste it to stiff cardboard (like illustration board or pic matting and cut out around the edges. Glue a ring on the back and you are set.
  6. In the state of Michigan Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts have the opportunity to serve at Mackinac Island State Park each summer. The scouts perform tasks including raising and lowering the flags at this historic Great Lakes outpost and act as guides. They live at a designated barracks and work hard to keep bright the 75 year tradition of their predecessors who include Eagle Scout - President Gerald R. Ford. I'M WONDERING IF THERE ARE ANY PROGRAMS LIKE THIS IN OTHER STATES AT STATE OR NAT. PARK SITES?
  7. Seems to be a sort of underground movement with putting community name on uniforms since council strips are quite general. Seen some troops with the oversized troop numerals (ala Jamboree style) with their town name on these number patches. Also saw a troop with sea scout dark blue numerals rather than normal red ones (guess they come with white bg also). Also some seem to have oversized custom council strips with their troop number made into the design. My troop had a narrow strip made in our school colors to sew between council and numeral patch.
  8. THINK I WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST PERSON TO OWN A BRUTON ECLIPSE..HAD A LOCAL STORE ORDER IT AND IT TOOK MONTHS TO COME SINCE THEY WEREN'T YET AVAILABLE. IT IS A GREAT TOOL, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS COMPASS USER. I'D LOOK AT ONE BEFORE YOU INVEST IN IT..IT IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN LESSER UNITS AND IT PROBABLY ISN'T FOR EVERYBODY. I'VE NEVER RUN INTO ANOTHER USER
  9. One very strong recommendation for Ransburg Scout Reservation just outside of Bloomington,IN ..run out of Indanapolis Council. It is everything you'd expect a great modern BSA camp could be .. I lived in 4 councils as a kid and my current troop always goes somewhere different (and has for years)and Ransburg is going to be very hard to equal. Be sure to consider the canoe trip to Patton's Cave. Another camp with lots of good old scout values is Camp Hiawathia in Michigan's UP. One final editorial ..Miss the GREAT Wright's Lake run by Dee Slate and the Ann Arbor MI Council.
  10. does anybody have access to the national camp inspection scores & how camps rank in the upper great lakes region (for 2004 summer)?
