  1. pretty much everything can and has been construed to be a YP violation in some way. even OA events, and swim checks can be, as others have shown from this board. however in this case if you happen to have an angry parent you can essentially guarantee BSA will do whats best for the BSA (corporation).

  2. never be surprised by the conduct of one scouter to another. bsa really does tolerate some horrendous conduct directed from adults to adults and few who really have the power to at least attempt to right the wrongs are willing to put the effort in and make it work. even as we see on this board some of the conduct shown ....... well, at least the scouts themselves are never that bad. honestly that's the main thing that kept me on for years despite constant harassment by other adult leaders.

in situations such as these, i know its sad but it might be best to cut the losses and find another or form another troop. its impossible to continue without the support of the cor as others have also stated. i believe we got at least 1-2 families a year transferring troops because of bad situations, most of which weren't this bad.

as for the injury you received, im pretty sure that's more battery than assault and you can always try pursuing either criminal or civil charges. there are actual rules he did violate in the this act and they are listed in the code of ethics which considering fact this document also talks about things like membership fraud should give you the indication bsa buries these types of issues. i can guarantee if you pursue this route you might win the case but the council will truly hate you and you will never get their support for anything ever again.

  3. I would have to agree with with the rather light requirements. 56yards well... might as well complete it in a pool.

Preforming a wet entrance Without assistance really should have been required here. Assuming you remembered your bailing equipment and are not completely swamped this a near necessity if you are far from land.

While possibly not required, being able to do a barrel roll is a nice skill to know and some of the non scouting kayak trips around here require it for the more intermediate/advanced rivers.

  4. Les Stroud if you wanted someone that actually understands and uses scoutcraft and survival skills and how to enjoy spending time in the wilderness. Of course choose Mike Rowe if you want to associate more with someone who tries out hundreds of jobs (merit badges) completing one per day (about average for those merit badge fairs or merit badge mill summer camps) with learning just the bare minimum and no real mastery of any job (or repeating or testing).

Cody would be acceptable too but his more minimum impact methods of wilderness living is just as far as you can go from the overdeveloped madness seen at some cub/boy scout activities.

  5. they certainly should actually taste the water using what they plan on using before the trip. that said sometimes they just might be making the decision based on weight. i personally use the aqua mira drops despite the fact i also own one of the pumps to save on weight and space when backpacking. if you are more sensitive to taste then go with the pump. the uv pen however would never be my first choice due to its requirement the water be mostly clear to begin with.

  6. Sadly you are now in that range of just 18+ the most persecuted age group by national BSA. You can essentially forget about any friendships you have built up over the years with those who might be just a few years younger than you. It doesnt really matter if they have been your best friend or neighbor for years. Now that you happen to be a legal adult just about any normal thing you might do with them like say talking, hanging out with, camping, traveling etc can now get you in serious trouble with the BSA who doesnt really care its age discrimination. So now that you really cant spend time with those any younger that yourself youre left with only those 18+. Since in most troops but not necessarily crews its either eagle then out or the rapidly decreasing membership as you get closer to that mark there likely arent many around in our age ranges. That leaves you with those old guys (advisors, and other troop and crew leaders) most of whom in my experience are at least 30 years older than you and likely have little to nothing in common with outside scouting. And since they are the ones constantly harassing you that you arent able to really spend time with the people you are actually close to its mostly hatred towards the old guys.
