  1. Hi Everyone,

When our pack goes camping , we always do breakfast burritos for our morning breakfast. We usually precook the sausage needed so it cuts down on cooking time and use either real eggs or the liquid eggs. I prefer the liquid eggs cause we don't have to worry about them breaking. We put all fillings (sausage, cheese, salsa, bacon, small chunks of cooked potato, sour cream, eggs and of course cheese) in pans so the kids can put what they want on there burritos. All of the kids really enjoy this. It's fairly quick to cook up and really easy for clean up.

Yes we are military. We have about 16months left at this duty station and I am hoping we can get back to Virginia where we were originally stationed after this tour. Of course that all depends on what is available and whats best for my husbands career. We are slowly approaching retirement and my husband would like to become a professional scout once he retires. He really loves being involved with the scouts and couldn't wait for our son to come of age. We were involved in a pack about 4 yrs ago but because of deployments we were only able to do it for a year. Our son joined the Tiger ranks in June of 04 and hasn't looked back. He is taking to scouting like his dad. He absolutely loves it. Our pack invites the incoming 1st graders to come along on our last campout of the year to see if they really want to be in scouts. If they choose to stay then they can join once the school year has finished. This way they don't miss out on Summer Day Camp. My son is going to have wonderful stories to tell of his camping experiences with the British scouts as well as his camporee experience that we attended in Normandy France (this is held every 3 yrs and involves all of the American scout packs and troops in Europe).

We have a great committee as well a good bunch of leaders. I think they will be quite receptive to letting all the boys that want to earn there whittling chip do it. I honestly feel that this is just a case of this is the way it has always been done and nobody really looked into the fact that all boys could earn it. Will let you know how it all works out

I have found what I was looking for. I looked through our leader book and it talks about Knives under Administration - Health and Safety as well as under Activities - Den and Pack Activies. I guess I should have looked there first instead of going by what our Pack has "always just done". I am very new to scouting. I didn't realize that my husband had recieved a new publication of it (IE : new being a 2003 version). The whittling issue never came up with us because we always just assumed that it was for Bears and older only because that was the way this pack and the pack we were in about 4 yrs ago did things. I would have never questioned this if the issue wouldn't have been on this board. Again, I appreciate everyones help in opening my eyes.

  4. Thanks everyone for your help. My husband who has just taken over as CubMaster will be emailing the unit commissioner and then will bring it up at the next Round Table as well as at our next committee meeting and see how they do things. As I had said my husband and I were resigned to have my son wait until he was a bear but if they say he can earn it along with his fellow younger scouts then my husband will make a push to allow the younger kids to do it. My husband has not said that they can't do it. He was under the impression that they were not allowed to do because the past cubmaster had only allowed the Bears an older earn it. My and my husbands intentions are not to be confrontational but to get the proper answers as we can not just walk into the local council and pick up the latest publications. We must order them which unfortunately can take a long time to get to us sometimes. My husband just wants the boys to have every possible opportunity they can. Again I would like to thank everyone for there help

ManyIrons: Thank You as well. I was just trying to ask a question but sometimes the words don't come out the way you intend.

  5. FScouter,

I didn't mean for my question to sound like that (Can anyone show me were they talk about Knives in the Wolf handbook?). I was trying to find out on what page it was so I could see what my son needs to do. Everywhere I look it says that you have to be a bear to earn the chip. I'm just trying to find out if he can do it. I know they say in the Guide to Safe Scouting that all the ranks can use the pocketknives but on all the chip requirements I can only find that it says bears and up. I would love to have my son earn his chip but it doesn't look like the Pack we are in allows it. We have been in it for a year and it has always only been open to Bears and older.

  6. We don't do den meetings over the summer but we do have Pack events;

June: We will have a Crossover Campout

July: Fourth of July Picnic and Fireworks and Cub Day

    Camp

August: National Kids Day Fair, Campout outside our

scout hut and a possible bowling alley lockin

Being on a small military base, we found it was just easier to do pack events over the summer

  7. Thanks ManyIrons, I'll keep looking and asking. Unfortunately our council office is in Germany (we live in England) so I cant go there but I'll have my husband call and see what they say. I will look again on there website and see if I can up with anymore info.

  8. We were always under the impression that you had to be a bear to earn the whittling chip. Since it is a requirement in the bear book. You cant work on requirements until you become a bear so how can they earn the chip? Can anyone show me were they talk about Knives in the Wolf handbook? I've looked through it but see no mention of knives. I have a up and coming wolf that desperately wants to earn his chip but was told he cant because it's a requirement for bears. Just really curious now cause I've seen different requirements all over the web but have found only were bears can actually earn the chip. My husband who is the CubMaster even agrees that it can only be Bears and up. We let our son whittle at home but not at Cub Scouts. He is bummed but understands that he has to wait till he's a bear. I think as a family we are going to make our son wait until he is a Bear but let him whittle at home under our supervision

  9. With our pack, depending on were we go, we sometimes cook as a unit or individually. When we do individual cooking everyone still shares. We just did a campout in France and we did it as a pack. Everyone agreed on the menu and then the menu was broken down and each family brought what was assigned to them. It worked out really well. We did Sloppy Joes for Friday night dinner, Breakfast burritos for Saturday morning breakfast, lunch was on our own as we were out in the field so everyone did sandwiches, and Saturday night dinner was spagetti. The evening meals were cooked ahead of time so all that needed to be done was warming them up. We were on a time constraint so the meals were quick and easy. The boys and siblings had to clean the dishes. This weekend we are going to camp at Chalfont near London and because of limited amount of time to prepare for the campout and because only about 10 or so of our boys and families are going we are cooking on our own. Fridays meal will be on the road. My husband is doing foil babies for Saturday evening and will bring enough to share and teach the boys how to make. We will again do burritos for breakfast as the boys really like them. Most of our Sunday breakfast meals are quick as it is also a pack out day so we do oatmeal or muffins. I like doing the pack cooking cause then you reduce the risk of over packing.

  10. Our Tigers are going to make neckerchief slides or whatever else they want to make out of self hardening clay tonight. Last week we made rain sticks. They really had a blast with that and it only took about 30 min. Next week is our last Den meeting and we are planning to just have fun playing games and eating. Our pack has there crossover campout on June 10 and then we have at least 1 activity in July planned plus summer camp and in August we have a activity planned and a campout planned for outside the scout hut.

  11. Well I went to the Dr today and he was pleased with my progress. I do feel guilty because I haven't had much time to really work on the eating right and excercising properly this past month but he encouraged me to get back on track ( I put 2 of the 20 pounds I lost back on). He even stated that he might try to reduce my blood pressure medicine. I have to go to the fire station on base and get my BP checked 5 times in the next 2 weeks and see what kind of reading they get. I have the tendency to get really nervous when I go to the Dr so my BP always goes up. He wants to try an experiment and see if a lot of my BP problems is just my nervousness. He said if he gets good results with that and I do a cholestoral screening that there's a good possibility that he will take me off the one med. I take 2 different blood pressure meds at the moment. I was so excited. The thought of having to take 1 less pill has really got me motivated to start working on my eating habits and my excercising. Keep working hard everyone. We can all make our goals.

  12. Hi All...

    Keep up the good work.

I personally have lost 20 pounds and my husband has lost 15 (he just needed to tone up). We have been following Dr Phils plan. I lost my 20 in about 2.5 months but I need to get back on track as this last month we were so busy I wasn't able to stick to the plan. For excercise I walk 2 miles every day except Sundays and sometimes Saturdays. When we are on scout functions we try to take healthier stuff as well as cut back on the amount of food we eat. That and drink lots of water. I wish everyone lots of success in there goals. I still have 40 pounds to go.

  13. We're very lucky as our den meets at 6:30 pm and the baseball field is right next to the scout hut. Most practices as well as games end by 6:30 for our age group so all they have to do is walk off the field and into the building. I hope you find a happy medium

  14. Just wanted to thank everyone for the welcome. This board is absolutely brilliant. I showed my husband it and he has also signed up.

Eamonn- Yes we are being treated great. The country is absolutely fabulous.

crgholthus - I think thats awesome about the exchange program. I'm sure your boys will have a blast. As to the Marmite - no wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole but we do go to the pubs quite a bit

Ghopher Judy - Yes we are absolutely having a wonderful time. We live out in the country and are literally surrounded by fields and sheep. I am realitively new to scouts but my husband has been in Scouts for some time. We couldn't wait for our son to get to first grade so he could join. Our Pack on base invited all of the boys that had completed Kindergarten to come on there end of the year campout which happended to be at Chalfont (near London)as a welcome into scouting get to know us. Well we have a wonderful group of boys who embraced the new younger boys and made them feel totally welcomed. My son went in very excited and came out totally hooked on the whole cub scout thing and has not looked back since. As a family we have been to Germany, Scotland, and Wales. As a family we have also been all over England. Some of the places we have taken our son have been to London, Dover, Stonehenge, a number of Castles, and a bunch of historic sites. This summer we are hoping to do some camping in the Scottish Highlands as well as the Lake District. We also want to take my son on a horse back riding weekend in Wales. Hopefully we'll have the time. France will be our first scouting event outside of England so we are all excited. Because of were we live in England we have focused most of our Go See Its to things close to base as well as on base (simply because of cost to our parents). I must say that living in England has been a wonderful experience for the entire family and we are going to miss it terribly when my husband gets transfered to his next duty station but as we have a little over a year left here we are going to make the most of it.

  15. Just wanted to thank everyone for there information. We had a meeting with my sons teacher today and we were informed that he definitely going to go to the second grade. She just had some concerns about his reading and has given us some steps to help him with it. I guess as a mom I worry to much and look for it to be worse than what it really is. Thanks again

  16. Trevorum,

Yes we actually went to Gilwell Park in Oct. Our boys had a blast. It was a little wet but then again everything is wet in England. My husband is planning on taking our son to Brown Sea Island as well as the Baden Powell House before we leave here. In May we will be camping at Chalfont. This will be my sons second time there. The first time was his very first scout event and needless to say it was one of the best times he ever had.

  17. CubMaster Fred,

Thanks so much for your reply. It eases my mind. My son lives, sleeps, and breaths scouts (and yes this is only his first year - must be in his genes)and I know if he couldn't advance with his friends he would be really upset. I had a feeling that my husband (who also lives, sleeps, and breaths scouts) was right but I wanted to make sure. Scouts are a very important part of our life. Not a day goes by that my son doesn't ask me if tonight is scouts (that or is it swimming or horse back riding today). We have a campout coming up in April to Normandy France and the first thing out of his mouth in the morning is how many days till we go to Normandy. I have had to start a countdown clock for him. I hope his enthusiasm continues cause it's a great organization to belong to.

    Thanks again

  18. Greetings,

I just joined the site today and think it's great. Good place to get my questions answered. We are currently living in England (at least for another year and a couple of months) and belong to a wonderful pack on the base that we live on. We are getting ready to do our 3rd campout (we had one in June 2004 and October 2004). The troop as well as the PACK will be going to Normandy France in April for all Europe campout. They are expecting 2,000 kids. In May we will be camping out in London at a British scoutcamp and then in June we will be having a campout at our base for the kids to crossover to there next rank. My son is so excited. He is currently a Tiger. My husband and I share the Tiger responsiblities and he is also the Asst. Cubmaster. In June he will take over as CubMaster and I guess I'll move up to Wolf with my son. Looking forward to getting to know this board.

  19. Greetings,

We are currently living in England. We live on a military base and have a small but wonderful Pack. I think it's great that you are interested in learning about other countries. Our pack has done a couple of campouts with the British scouts and it was a wonderful experience. We have a campout coming up in May were I believe we will be with the British scouts again. Our troop and Pack are also going to be attending a campout in Normandy France in April. What an experience this will be for all of them. My son is Tiger currently and he just cant get enough of scouting. My husband is taking over as Cubmaster in June.

  20. Ok I was just reading in the Leader Book that a boy can't become a Webelos till he has completed 3rd grade or is 10. So does that mean that my son can still advance but he can't become a Webelos till he starts 4th grade? I hope thats the case cause I know my son will be heartbroken if he can't move up to Wolf with his friends. I doubt that it would bother him that much if he was told that he had to finish 3rd grade before he could move up to Webelos. We currently live in England right now and will be transfering back to the states in a year so he will be starting a new pack anyway. He absolutely loves being in Cub Scouts. Thanks for all your help.

  21. Hi,

I'm new here but I have a question. If it has been addressed before please forgive me and point me in the right direction. My son is currently in the first grade and is 6. I have a feeling that the teacher is going to recomend that we hold him back. He has already earned his Tider Badge and will earn his bobcat by June. He has already completed all the requirements they are just holding it for the crossover campout. If he is held back in first grade will he be allowed to move up to Wolf since he has already completed all the requirements or will he have to do Tigers all over again. My husband says that he will still advance but I can't find anything about this. Thanks for your help
