  1. I find it appalling that our National Anthem is being sung & recorded in Spanish. I wish someone would start again to make English our official language. I know Peter King from Long Island tried but it was voted out. I could rant on & on but I won't because I don't have the time right now!

  2. Wow! That's a lot! I'm a Tiger Den Leader & we've done electives at den meetings & I've asked what they've done at home. I know that the boys read every night for school but I've explained to the parents that they can't get credit every time they read & they understood! The same with playing board games! They've gotten credit for it about 3 times & not right after each other. We have pack night on April 21st & my 3 Tigers will be getting their 4th Tiger Track Bead. They will probably have 6 beads each by the time we have pack graduation on June 9th (we couldn't get a later date to use the school this year). I think the parents might be exaggerating that the boys have done over 100 electives & maybe you should have a talk with them. Good luck!

  3. I think it all depends on the person. I was my son's ADL from Bears to Webelos II & when he crossed over to Boy Scouts in March 2005 I was very "lost" & "denless". I really enjoyed the time I spent with the boys in the den & helping them learn new skills, things, etc. & watching them grow. I was still involved in the pack at pack meetings committee meetings. When September rolled around I helped out with registration & told the CC & CM that if none of the parents want to be the Tiger DL that I would take on that responsibility. I went to Tiger Leader training (already had Webelos Leader Training) & I was just waiting to find out if there were any Tigers. At registration some of the parents didn't sign their sons up because they didn't want to be at the den meetings with them, they thought they could just drop their son off at the meeting. I have 3 Tigers & I'm having a great time & so are they! We've done a lot of different things, they're very eager & enthusiastic & I'm really enjoying it! Their parents are great too, very cooperative!

I said I'd be the Tiger Leader because I had a great time with my son & his den. Also, I wanted to still be involved & help out as much as I could & this was a great way to do both. I told my Tigers & their parents that I'd be with them until they crossed over to Boy Scouts! It's a great learning experience!

  4. Hey Pack!

We take a charter boat out of Captree State Park on the South Shore of Long Island & fish on the Great South Bay. The 1st year we went I caught 2 fluke & a cold, it was raining! The mates even filet the fish for you! It was nice to have fresh fish! This year the boat leaves at 3:30pm! :)

    ScoutingAgain,

I saw Madagascar & the only thing I can remember is the song "you've got to move it, move it" because my 2 kids sing that a lot! LOL! I'll have to check out the "specialist propaganda". I wonder if PETA knows about this? ;)

In my opinion, I'd rather see testing done on animals than humans as I do rate humans better than animals. Of course there are a few humans who are lower than animals. I see nothing wrong with testing on rats & mice as they bring disease & other things & they are pests. PETA I think is a little whacked out in their thinking, especially about this fishing thing! It's nice to be kind to animals but don't put animals equal or above humans. I would never intentionally hurt any animal but if it's between me & an animal or my kids & an animal, the animal has to be taken care of.

  5. Well as a single mom, my husband died in April 1997 & 2 children ages 11 & 9 it's not easy, especially when I lost my job back in April 2003. It took awhile but I had a job but only for a week, they said I was too slow. Personally, I think the person who was training me didn't like me for some reason. I found another job 2 months later & that lasted for 7 weeks, they let me go because I wasn't fast enough, it was A/P & very busy at times. I thought I was doing ok. I did find a job in January 2004 which lasted for 1 year. They let me go because I had gotten really sick over Christmas & missed about a week of work. I'm still trying to find work, I had to cash in my 401(k) from the job I had for 13 years - they were laying off a number of people.

I applied for Social Services at the end of August & every time I went there the waiting room was full. I filled out a lot of paperwork & had to give them copies of personal paperwork & it took 2 months before I was finally approved & received Food Stamps!!! My children & I had moved back in with my parents, who are retired & living on Social Security. The only money I have now is the money I receive from Social Security Survivor's Benefits for my 2 children. I receive the Food Stamps for 6 months! I guess I have to go a re-apply if I can't find a job.

Yes, I'm involved with Scouts, we do give a few cans for Scouting for Food because I'm sure that there are people whose situation is worse than mine. My parents help out a little & I only buy my kids clothes when they've really outgrown them & they're on sale.

I don't know why our government can't spend more money here in this country instead of sending it abroad. The people in this country need to be taken care of first.

Also, it's a shame that it takes around 2 months to be able to receive Food Stamps. It's a federal government program but to apply you need to go through your local Social Service agency.

I do know people who are working 2 jobs & struggling to eat & pay bills.

If I went off topic too much, please forgive me.

  6. I watched all of the videos & after the last one finished & said produced by the BSA or something similar I noticed this was made back in 1989! Don't they have anything more current?

I was surprised too at the suggestion that competition was a step in learning like OGE was.

I did notice that none of the leaders had a trained patch on!

It was good butI'm sure that things need to be added. How to deal with a scout with behavior problems, or learning disabilities, etc.

  7. I hope that the next time I eat flounder I'm not going to be arrested or after I eat it decide to kill some people! Good grief! I've never heard so much drivel in my life! What a whacked out organization PETA is!

P.S. Our pack fishing trip in June 3rd, anyone want to join us! ;)

  8. Happy New Year!

    1. I will do my best to eat healthier & to exercise more so I can lose weight. I want to be able to walk in the Memorial Day Parade without panting!

    2. To remember to make some of the crafts myself before I have my Tigers do them at a meeting! I had a snowglobe disaster! I used the wrong glue, it dripped into the water, too much glitter & it leaked! I was able to fix the problems though!

    3. To finish organizing my scouting paperwork, magazines, etc.

I'm sure that there's more I could do but I can't think of anything else at this moment!

  9. Eamonn,

I don't relish the conversion job you have!

Unfortunately (sp?) manufacturers of female clothing do not have a standard size as ScoutNut has said which makes buying clothes very difficult & frustrating! I am overweight & my upper arms are large & you'd think that the larger sizes would have the sleeves bigger! No, at times I have to take a larger size just to fit my upper arms! The same with shoes & sneakers.

The best thing would be to have the females try the uniforms on to see what fits them best. Good luck!

    P.S. I'm "Slightly hippy" too! ;)

  10. Hi Packsaddle! Glad you're back on Earth!

To add a little levity to this discussion, I have the answer to who/where are the "Missing Links". My 2 brothers are the missing links as at times they don't form words, they grunt instead! LOL! ;) I can say this as I'm older than they are!

  11. How did you guys find this info? I think it would be soooooo cool if they did have a US council map as Oak Tree suggested.

Miki101 with all the docs that you have you should write a book about Scouting History! I would love to read it!

The Council that I'm in, the Suffolk County Council was formed on April 6, 1919; it has it on their website as I wasn't even thought of since my grandmother was only 18 at the time!

As to the "side thread"! I love The Beatles, I still have the "Hard Days' Night album that I got for my 7th birthday in 1964! I do love Cream & Eric Clapton & at the wedding of one of my cousins my brothers & other cousins kept asking the band to play "Cocaine" & they finally did! No, I've never used cocaine or anything like that, I just love the song! I've never had the pleasure of attending their concerts though!

    Happy New Year!

  12. You are right, every den is allowed to perform at a pack meeting! I would guess that the only reason a den wouldn't perform is that they didn't have a skit, song, etc.

Our pack also has each den do set up, clean up, flag ceremony & snacks & that rotates for every month. I feel like I'm missing something but I can't think of what it is at this moment!

Good luck with your pack meetings!
