  1. Wise points all of them personally I will need to work harder. You see I learned from what I witnessed helping at Summer camp etc. I have never seen boys individually tested on first aid for canoing, rowing, smallboat sailing, etc. But always in a group setting with questions and answers and never with a CPR device. Good points Beavah thank you.
  2. I failed to finish the line in my previous post A short review Do I have a CPR practice dummy NO! What I do have, 36 years in boating and amateur competitive water skiing. I havent missed a summer camp in years. If a kid has not performed the BSA swim test I test him right then in my ski lake. We have come a long way from hiking, backpaking, and Citz in the nation. The point of it all when a troop feels its necessarry to add stipulations, requirements and conditions that may or may not impact BSA policy I feel it is necessary to reserch it further. It would be much simpler if our
  3. If he is an 11 year old working on all of the merit badges listed at the same summer camp then quite possibly they should. In this communication for my part I was addressing MBs that are being worked on congruently. But even at that do you have every boy in water sports, motor boating, white water, etc. complete first aid requirements or a short 1. Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while participating in water sports, including hypothermia, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, sunburn, minor cuts and blisters. 2. Do the following:
  4. An a unit instituting a "No Double Dipping" policy on MB's is absurd since the unit has nothing to do with the requirements for MB's! That is why I posted in the first place. I feel the hiking has merit in the writing (I may be wrong but would rather err to the right of the issue). I gave example earlier of communications and citizenship on the Nations that is foolish to me. I struggled with our troop rules a couple of years ago. They tried to institute a Life project on the same order as a mini Eagle project. I was able to get that voted down in committee with the help of this
  5. Here is the statement in the requirements. The hikes in requirements 5 and 6 can be used in fulfilling Second Class Rank (2a) and First Class Rank (3) rank requirements, but only if Hiking merit badge requirements 1, 2, 3, and 4 have been completed to the satisfaction of your counselor. The hikes of requirements 5 and 6 cannot be used to fulfill requirements of other merit badges. He was able to join the boys working on second class 1a and 1b. He completed the 10 with an Eagle scout and his Dad yesterday. Thanks everyone, gilski
  6. Evidently it is written and you guys are correct. Thanks for your help. RESOLVED
  7. Working and playing smart is not skating requirements. And I post here to get the wisdom of others. Still I ask is it written anywhere? Or is it another fine example of an adult led troop. By the by Saturday should be capitalized no skating on penmanship either.
  8. Citizenship in the World Motor boating Water skiing Salesmanship
  9. Well lets look at that example for Communication you have to make notes and give an objectivity report. For Citizenship in the Community you simply attend. Why not use both if you are actively signed up and working on them. Other than being inefficient what is the lesson? Is it BSA policy? If so I will bow-out if not I think it is totally illogical.
  10. It really seems foolish to me especially when you are working on both at the same time. Is that written anywhere.
  11. I posted this under OA by mistake Our troop has instituted a no double dipping policy for merit badges. We finished a Philmont trek this August and I was inquiring about utilizing the 10 mile portion for my sons hiking merit badge qualification. He did four 10 mile and one 20 mile hike in prep for Philmont. The final day of Philmont was an 11 mile switch back death march (at least for me). I was told these were used for the backpacking merit badge only or he could drop them from backpacking and use them toward hiking but not both. Any thoughts?

  13. I see the point on the OA. The double dip rule for our troop has not been in the area of sevice hours we have always kept those seperate if you gain 12 hrs for one advancement that requires 6 thats great however the extra hours do not carry over. The double dipping rule has to do with things like if you go to a community meeting for Citz in the community it does not count fo communications. Even if you are currently working on both, you would have to go to another meeting for that.
  14. My son finished his Eagle Project and has one last requirement in Citizenship in the community which he has dragged his feet on. He rarely attends troop meetings now that he full field his POR for 6 months. His time is spent working at his job, church band practice on Tuesday evenings (scout night), playing in the worship services at church twice a week. He is trusted and counted on by adult leaders in the above venues. Has he shown Scout spirit? Is he worthy of Eagle?
  15. The advice has been great! now I am wondering about our double dipping rule does anyone here agree with that policy?
  16. I actually posted this again because I could not find the post this AM sorry, I am grateful for the responses. I was not aware a kid should not build a shelter for OA.
  17. If a boy needs the overnight camp out for Wilderness Survival should he be allowed to use the OA ordeal camp out for requirements 8, 9 if he follows the guidelines? #8 Show that you can find and improvise a natural shelter minimizing the damage to the environment. #9 Spend a night in your shelter. Our troop has a no double dipping rule if you are accomplishing one task you can not utilize it to fulfill another.
  18. My son has not discussed the subject with any leaders accept the one who made the suggestion. After reading the replies, he has no intention of accepting financial aid from the troop for this young man. He has a decided to use money he earned from mowing to help with the expense.
  19. Thank you all for your comments. I'm glad my son and I were not the ones who made the suggestion. I will encourage him to keep looking for other avenues to help this young man out. By the way the district eagle committee especially the committee chair encouraged him a lot more than I did. Sadly I thought he was biting off more than he could chew and tried to get him to do another project. Thanks, Gilski
  20. A boy in our troop (my son) has decided on an Eagle Project with an organization out of state that works with the poor in Mexico. Ten of the boys in the troop and three of the dads are going. The dads going are paying airfare for their sons and themselves. Four of the boys are brothers from a family of nine and finances are tight. The Scoutmaster and a committee member suggested to my son the troop might offer a scholarship to pay for one of the brothers. My son is trying to raise support to help offset expenses for the other boys. The committee chair said the troop cannot help financia
  21. I am intrigued by how controversial my question is. May I add a couple of twists for some of you? As stated my sons hours were accepted, and show up on his IHR for Star. He was not proselytizing in Mexico he was building homes for the poor with the blessing of his SM. The Leadership portion of the boys life requirement can be as little as two hours utilizing a couple of scouts. So it is in addition or in conjunction with the normal 6 hours. So the SM can officially approve a 6 hour service project then request another project with leadership for SMC or BOR. But again I
  22. Beavah, Starting to take offense here! You type like Im not in the room. 1. My son is not aware of this debate in committee; He completed a new service project leading 5 fellow scouts. 2. The parents both for and against are only the active working adults we havent blown the roof off the church. 3. I go on 85 to 90% of the campouts, pulling the trailer, Merit badge counselor, Chaplin, Training coordinator for the adults, and am involved in most BORs. (If your troop volunteers work an hour a week I will move to your city). The parents who question this include
  23. FScouter I have been preaching that system, implementation with wisdom. Eagle74 the hours were approved and he was asked to share the vision with the Scouts. I have not created a stir (except here) in the troop as Chaplin it is my duty to serve and support the troop as well as the SM. This issue can and will be handled from within, again the wisdom provided here is enough to incorporate new skills without adding to a particular requirement. Thanks, Gilski
