Owl62, In our District the District Chairman, Assistant Dist Chair, Dist Commissoner, Dist Training Chair and some of the members are SM. More are ASM and some are just registered to the District.

I am having problems getting into topics and posting replys. I am getting a not responding message.

Looks like about 15 of our 33 commissioners, including our District Commissioner and 4 ADC's will have to decide if they want to be Commissioners or Unit Leaders.

I am currently registered as an ASM, Cub Pack Committee, District Committee and ADC, but it looks like this must change.

Let me see if I understand this right. We expect the boy to plan meetings and outings, to plan and carry out service projects, to find and contact Merit Badge counselors but when it comes to asking for SM conferences and BOR an adult must do it for him. Am I missing something here? Is it wrong to expect the boy to say I need a SM conference or to call the advancement chair and say I am ready for a BOR?

I don't know how. If you get any handbook before the latest, the one I have here is the Feb 1979 printing, it says "The two stars symbolize truth and knowledge, and the outdoors in Scouting." It is my understanding that it changed in the latest edition but I could never find out why.(This message has been edited by EagleWB)

The other post on the two stars got me thinking again and maybe someone here can help me. The Two Stars always stood for Truth and Knowledge And the Outdoors. Why was it changed in the latest edition of the Handbook to just Truth and Knowledge?

Our pack gives these boys the new Scout Handbook and Fieldbook.

I am sure that a raffle is not allowed for fundraising. People must get something for their money. Maybe you can show your SE all the money they are going to lose when you have to shut the course down. We have had similar problems and this argument seemed to work the best for us.

Who does the District Chair require the verification from? If it is the SM you may have to convince him that the MB counselor will take the days since he joined. I don't know any SM or MB counselor that doesn't count the days since joining. The same would apply to the language.

In the past we have made Flower boxes, to be hung over a railing on a deck or porch. Clocks -- We bought inexpensive battery clock works, used some scrap paneling and put it in a picture frame they made.

Eamonn, I know what you are feeling. My son will be 16 soon and is First Class. He has been on Summer Camp staff 2 yrs, was on staff for our week long JLT, is a committee chairman in OA and has been the person in charge of many weekend Troop campouts. He just doesn't care to advance. I know he knows and lives the program. Would I like to see him Eagle, yes but that is his decission. I don't mind when people talk to him about advancement but I make sure to tell them that if they pressure him too much and he gets turned off to Scouting then they will have to answer to me. As they said your son still has 2yrs and as long as he is active I believe you are doing the right thing.

Thank you for your replies. I was pretty sure it was ok, but wanted to check it for sure before the Scout proceeded with it.

I know you can't have a fund raiser, for an Eagle project, just to raise funds for some organization. But if enough material isn't donated and the Scout can't get enough donations can he have a fund raiser to get enough money to buy materials that are needed?

Mike and Red Feather, I was wondering if there was some reason you didn't use the Scout Base when you went to Boundary Waters. I know all of the Boundary Waters is a great place. I love the area.

OGE thank you for the information. I will e-mail or call him. I have found kits on the net but am not sure if our Council will spring for them and was wondering if anyone else have made them from scratch.

Does anyone know where I can get plans to build frames for the tents in our Cub resident camp? OGE I know your Akelaland has them but I can't remember how they were made.

I am a professional firefighter, for the last 17 years.

My favorite is D.O. Chicken Parmesan. We also make all the extras to go with it. We started with a weekend devoted to cooking and the boys are slowly starting to make better meals on all campouts.

But Bob White, it still doesn't say the adult must be registered to the Troop unless you take the "Adult leaders in units" to mean this. The Cub card also says they are registered members of the Boy Scouts of America.

Acco40, sorry I tend to shorten things. I meant as opposed to a dual registration.

Bob I can't find where it says the adult has to be registered to the Troop, but I don't have an adult application here. I checked through my unit election material and all I can find is the adult must be registered.

Overtrained you are right about the Troops with over 50 boys. All of the Troops I have been doing are under 50 and I tend to forget that rule.

Acco40 you are right about the tap out ceremony. Now we have a Call out ceremony right after the election. I also believe you to be right on in your thinking on why a Troop Committee wouldn't nominate someone from just a Pack.

The number of adults registered to the Troop has no bearing on the number of adults who can take the ordeal. "Each year, upon holding a troop election for youth candidates which results in at least one youth candidate being elected, the unit committee may recomend only one registered adult, 21 years of age or older, to the lodge adult selection committee. The camping requirements set forth for youth members must be fulfilled by this adult." Most adults nominated are registered to the Troop. I'm not sure if the Troop committee can nominate an adult from the Pack, unless they are dual registered. I have never seen this in the years I have been on the unit elecdtions committee. An at-large adult can be nominated by the district or Council.

If they are going to the National Base in Boundry Waters he must pass the swim test. There is a form that must be filled out and signed by Aquatics Director or other qualified person, before they go. If they are going to a private base then I would follow the advise given above. I would not take anyone who could not pass the swimmers test, but this would be know to all in advance so there would be no questions.

By the way the National Base sets it up for three in every canoe when possible. One to portage canoe, one to portage personal gear and one to portage crew gear.
