Leadership Positions For Rank

Recommended Posts

To earn Star, Life & Eagle rank, the scout must serve in a leadership position for six months. Can someone please point me to a written BSA reference for these questions?

1) Does it have to be six consecutive months in the same position?

2) Does it have to be since they earned their current rank?

3) Does it have to be a troop position, vs a patrol position?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the prompt responses. However, your answers lead to new questions (often the case when educating the newbie troop adult leaders).

4) Does the scout have to serve in the same leadership position for the required time?

5) It makes sense that the patrol leader position qualifies. What about assistant patrol leader, patrol quartermaster, patrol cheermaster, etc?

6) Would either of you esteemed gentlemen be so kind as to please provide me with a citation to an official BSA publication that spells this out for me?(This message has been edited by CubsRgr8)

While a First Class Scout, serve actively for 4 months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility (or carry out a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project to help the troop): Boy Scout troop

Patrol leader,

assistant senior patrol leader,

senior patrol leader,

troop guide,

Order of the Arrow troop representative,

den chief,

scribe,

librarian,

historian,

quartermaster,

bugler,

junior assistant Scoutmaster,

chaplain aide, or

instructor.

THese are Troop positions, not Patrol positions, unless it qualifies as a "leadership project assigned by the Scoutmaster to help the Troop."

Scoutldr you oopsed! The first Position on the list is Patrol Leader and that is a Patrol position.

CubsRgr8,

4) as the requirement in the handbook reads "one or more"

5)If it does not match a required position or special SM assigned project then it does not meet the requirements in the Boy Scout Handbook.

6) The Boy Scout Handbook

Hope this helps,

Bob White

Not to get into a battle, but the Patrol Leader position can be thought of as a troop position as well as a patrol position. It is a patrol position for obvious reasons. It can be considered a troop position because he is a member of the PLC.

As a SM can assign/approve of leadership, he/she may also NOT approve of a position (for example PL) if they felt the position was not carried out properly.

In the troop vs. patrol debate, when such positions as QM, Scribe, etc. are listed, they refer to Troop QM, Troop Scribe as opposed to patrol scribe. And yes, once again, all of the information is in the BSA literature!

To add some clarification to the issue of continuous service:

In many Troops, elections are held in timeframes less than one year. When this is the case, unless a boy earns his new rank (1st class, Star, or Life) in sync with the election cycle, he is likely to not serve either four or six months in the same position. this would make it unfair to insist that it be the same position continuously, or even just continuously.

At our recent UofS, I attended a Life to Eagle seminar...very well taught. The instructor emphasized that, on the Eagle app, a total of 180 days in one or more leadership positions, (since the date of the Life BoR) is what they look for. There is no minimum tenure in any one position. Also, it is not necessary to list more than 180 days. If they see 180, the box is checked. No extra credit. It is logical that the most responsible positions would be listed (i.e., SPL rather than Den Chief), however that is NOT a requirement.
