Soap and soap and soap...

We'll put this here in Cub Scouts, 'cause that's where it starts.

 

Had a good Webelos Weekend. Our Troop did a Whittlin'Chip instruction station. Lotsa Webs learned about safe knife handling and care. Then we loaned them a pocket knife and gave them a bar of soap and told'em to make something. They sat down on a big blue tarp and went to work. We saw cars, airplanes, a tent, and even some recognizable animals.

 

My question is: What can you do with the remains of about 75 bars of Ivory soap? Anybody out there know how to successfully make bars out of scraps?

So far, all we can do is put the scraps in old knee high nylon stockings. Works okay, washes hands etc. okay, but still alittle messy.

Microwave doesn't work to melt it (nice puffy result).

Double boiler does'nt work.

Direct heat threatens to ruin the pan.

Dissolve the shavings in water and use it to refill your liquid hand soap dispenser.

partially soften them in water and then squeeze them together and let them dry.

Soften w/ water and then add "prizes" to make treasure bars then press together and let harden.

Send the Cub Scouts out and get them as muddy and dirty as is possible (Rory can give lessons in this)

Wet the tarp, place on a not too steep hill and wet under supervision have the Cub Scouts slide down again and again making as much noise as they can until most of the mud is gone.

Send them home half clean.

(Leaving them half dirty lets their parents know that they had a great time.)

I have a one side scrubby/one side net "Washcloth" I put soap scraps in and keep it in a plastic baggy for times when we have showers available -i.e. Scout Camp.

It's not LNT enough for backpacking (for me) but it's great at established sites with facilities. And at 97cents at Wally Mart it's an affordable way to keep those scraps at home from going to waste. You would just be starting out with an almost full "Washcloth".

 

If your pack doesn't get out enough to places where they would need (or take) showers they could donate to the associated Troop(if any).(This message has been edited by Gunny2862)
