HI. I became CM this year and I was going thru a box that I was given and there were segments in there. I can not find any info on them. How do you earn them and are they for Cubscouts or Boy Scouts?

Any help would be appericated.

Those segments may be for the Good Turn for America program. They put out segments with a year on them.

Earning that patch (which goes on the right pocket as a temp) is very broad. Typically they are for any scouter (boy or adult) that donates time and effort to the Good Turn program (and program wants you to log these hours in their online database).

The web site for that is:

Typically, these segment programs are participation emblems. They have been created by patch companies, and in some cases adopted by Scout units, districts or council as a means of recognizing participation. They are less expensive than purchasing full size patches for multiple events.

As with most participation patches, there are no real requirements. Receiving the segment indicates that the Scout attended an event.

There are a couple companies that provide these segments. They are not interchangeable - If you start with one oompany, you can't really switch to the other, because the segments aren't quite the same size or shape.

Check in your local Scout shop to see if your council uses the segments. Otherwise, it's something you can adopt as a pack.

Here's an example of a council program:

Two companies that supply these are:

There are a number of different things they can be. Without seeing them it is hard to tell. Are any of the boys in the Pack wearing any segments?

You best bet might be to take a few in to your local Scout Shop and look around. If you can't find anything similar, ask the Shop staff.

My council carries the small segments with pictures on them like these at Benchmark Awards -

Not every council utilizes segments like these. Of those that do, some have specific requirements to earn them, and others, like my council, do not.

Since the segments are usually around $0.50 ea, they are much cheaper than a full size patch costing $1+. Our Pack uses them as participation recognitions. We give them out for just about everything a boy does. Attendance at Pack meetings, outings, service projects, popcorn, etc. They go in circles around our Council patch on the back of their red "brag vest". If a boy has been with us for 4.5 years the back of his vest can get pretty much covered. It looks rather cool!

Thanks for all the replys. I have never seen them at the scout shop. I will ask our shop and uc to see if this is a program that is already in place and if not maybe we could adopt it. I think this would be something nice to be a able to give to the boys that are particaptinb.
