What questions to expect from a BOR

Recommended Posts

Since there is a rather long thread going on about what a BOR can/can't and should/shouldn't do it made me wonder what sort of questions a Scout could expect from a BOR.

Will a Scout going for 2nd Class be expected to pull out his compass and show how to take a reading? Or maybe, instead, be prepared to talk about where his hike was, the best/worst/muddiest part of it?

Should a 1st Class BOR expect him to demonstrate his lashing or simply be able to explain what he made and what it was used for?

With recharter I will be a member of the Troop Committee, so when/if I am asked to sit on a BOR I want to be prepared. I figure if we expect the boys to be, the least I can do is be prepared myself. And no, I can't just wait to cross that bridge when I get to it, I'm not good a "winging it" and like to know what is expected of me beforehand.

Thanks

YiS

Michelle

Try these links for guidelines on conducting a BOR and lists of questions that might be asked on a BOR:

I'm sure there is an offical BSA publication that covers this, perhaps one of the more informed members of the forum can tell you which one

Here are some of my favorites:

What is the most important part of the Scout Oath to you? Why?

Last point of the Scout Law is Reverent. In the past month how did you show Reverence to God, and going to church every Sunday doesn't count.

Scouting have given a lot to you...right? Kids answers yes. How do you plan to give back to scouting once you become an adult.

What was your favorite merit badge? Why?

What was your least favorite mb? Why?

What would you change to make things better in your troop?

If you can get a copy of Mark Ray's book "The Scoutmasters Other Handbook" [which is about $8 and can usually be found at your Trading Post] this is an excellent resource for suitable questions for every rank, including Eagle. There is also lots of other useful information in it. I also use it many times when I'm doing a SM Conference too, just to refresh myself of what is suitable to ask.
