    Eagle Charge:

_____________: "Scouts of all nations make up one of the most wholesome and significant movements in the world's history. You have been judged by the Boy Scouts of America as being worthy of this honor. All who know you rejoice in your achievement. This award, as you will know, is one of honor and responsibility. You are a marked man. As an Eagle Scout, you have assumed a solemn obligation to do your duty to God, to Country, to your fellow Scouts, and to mankind in general. This is a great undertaking. As you live up to your obligations you bring honor to yourself and to your brother Scouts."

"America has many good things to give you and your children after you; but these good things depend for the most part on the quality of her citizens. Our country has had a great past. You can help make the future even greater."

"I charge you to undertake your citizenship with a solemn dedication. Be a leader, but lead only toward the best. Lift up every task you do and every office you hold to the highest level of service to God and to your fellow man."

"So live and serve, that those who know you will be inspired to finer living. I charge you to be among those who dedicate their hearts, hands, skills, and abilities to the common good. Help to build America's future by continuing to set an example of clean living, honest work, unselfish citizenship and reverence for God, whatever others may do. You will leave behind you a record of which you may be justly proud."

"Eagle Candidate _____________, I charge you to enter this Eagle Scout brotherhood holding without reservation and ever before you the ideals of honor and service. By the repetition of the Eagle Scout promise before your fellow members, you will become an Eagle Scout. When you pledge yourself on your sacred honor, you will be sealing your eternal loyalty to the code of the Eagle Scout with the same words which closed the Declaration of Independence."

"Will all Eagle Scouts here tonight please stand and renew your Eagle Scout promise as_____________ joins our brotherhood? (Pause) Scout sign; repeat after me;"

"I reaffirm my allegiance .... to the three promises of the Scout Oath .... I thoughtfully recognize .... and take upon myself .... the obligations and responsibilities .... of an Eagle Scout. .... On my honor, I will do my best .... to make my training an example .... and my status and my influence .... count strongly for better Scouting .... and for better citizenship .... in my troop, .... in my community, .... and in my contacts with other people. .... To this I pledge my sacred honor."

"Two. Please be seated" "_____________, your conduct along the trail has been excellent. You have rededicated yourself to the principles of Scouting. But one more thing is important ... your future." "As an Eagle Scout, you become a guide to other Scouts. You become an example in your community. Remember that your actions are now a little more conspicuous and people will expect more of you. To falter in your responsibility would reflect not only on you, but on your fellow Eagles and all of Scouting. The torch you carry is not only yours, but it is also ours."

    ---------------------

This was the Eagle charge at my Eagle ceremony. There are different versions out there though. According to:

""Will all Eagle Scouts here tonight please stand and renew your Eagle Scout promise as_____________ joins our brotherhood? (Pause) Scout sign; repeat after me;"

"Our brotherhood" sounds like the speaker is an Eagle himself.

Either way, I say let the Scout have whomever he likes read the Eagle charge. Usually in my experience only other Eagles give the charge, whether that is required or not I am not sure. Keep us posted.

  2. BrentAllen, thanks for the response. Out of the different material short sleeves you wear, which is the best in the hot weather, what keeps you coolest?

  3.

What material shorts/pants do you all wear? I have to buy new shorts and pants and plan of getting a couple of each. Any suggestions? I see the shorts are available in different materials as well as the pants. What kinds do you all prefer? Especialy for different occassions, camping, formal etc... Thanks!

    Poly/Wool-shorts/pants

    vs

    Poly/Cotton-shorts/pants

    vs

    Cotton-shorts/pants

I have to also get a few new shirts, any suggestions for the different seasons. Too many choices imo! Three different materials for short sleeve shirts! What should I choose!?

Does anyone know what kind of Jackets were worn I believe prior to the 1950's by Scoutmasters. They have 4 pockets on them, and are worn with a belt. I believe the only insignia is the Boy Scouts of America strip.

I have been trying to track down some pictures, but they are hard to find. BP and Uncle Dan are seen in some old photos wearing them... I have heard that they are called norfolk jackets. Anyone know?

  5. "Urban Scouting"? Here we go again (remember 1974?).

What happened? I was born in 84. Eagle in 03. I know of some bad stories of scouts during the vietnam years. Is that what they are referring to? Fill me in...

IMO, scouting in urban areas should be looked into in a big way. Lot's of urban kids need the solid direction scouting can provide.

This summer I am reading 'Horses for dummies' :)

    I would suggest

'Flags of our Fathers' by James Bradley....It's about the flag raisers of Iwo Jima, great book!

    OR

'Crow Killer: The saga of Liver-Eating John Johnson' by Raymond W. Thorp & Robert Bunker.... It's the true story of a Mountain Man from about 150's ago. Very Interesting book, not an easy read though. A bit controversial but well worth the read, not too long either. Very exciting too, made me want to go to the rockies and live in a cabin :)

    Eamonn:

"Sadly and I have no idea why the Campaign Hat is a Boy Scout hat."

Eamonn is this really true!? It's a great hat, just as useful as the expedition hat. And its such a great traditional hat. My complaint as I have said before, is the new ones are too hard and really only decorative/symbolic. The vintage ones from the 30's through the 40's were floppy, much more usefull and much more comfortable.

  9. Well it depends on your son. Some things I can think of off hand are the fact that he may not know anyone in the troop he is joining. Are any of his friends scouts? When you go looking at different troops bring him with you. See how he interacts with the scouts and how they react to him. If they are friendly as scouts should be he will be fine.

Many Scouts are competitive when it comes to rank. Since he wil be joining at 16 1/2 he will be entering as the rank of Scout and working towards tenderfoot if he chooses to advance. Boys normally work on tenderfoot at the age range of 12-13. If your son is self-conscious that may be an issue for him.

Again it depends on your son and the troop you find. Has he shown interest in scouting? What are his hobbies etc..? If he wants to join scouting to make eagle scout it may not work for him. If he is joinging to learn scout skills and have some fun it could be perfect for him. Troops always need older boys with drive and motivation, if he's got that fitting in will not be an issue.

    Keep us posted.

Thats a great story, would make a great Scoutmaster minute! I believe your husband is right. A Scout is Helpful, and Friendly. I would like to think that people do recognize that Scouts are people who enjoy to serve and lend a helping hand. Do a Good Turn Daily is something we live by and it's nice to see it in action. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, if you have a Venturing Crew near by that may be your best bet. If not though, no its never to late to join scouts. Shop around for a Troop that offers a good program for the older scouts. It's not all about advancement. If your son is looking for some great fun and learning, and if you can find the right troop, he could love it. Good luck, and let usknow what happens.

I had a blast at the Jambo even as a guest. It really was quite amazing to see Scouting or such a huge scale. Hops you didn't like the fireworks? I thought it was pretty great! Seeing the President was great too, too bad I was online for the latrine when he first came out on stage...typical. And oh man was it hot...wheh... If any of you were seated on the left side looking towards the stage you may have noticed the Venturers walking around with 24 packs of water handing them out to people. I was one of them. Wearing my explorer/venturing flat hat of course! Overall it was an awesome experience! I will no doubt be going to the next jambo...2010!

  13. Calling all Eagles!

I just stumbled onto the NESA website and it is new and exciting! For those of you who are current NESA members, you can create an account on the NESA website for members stuff. They have a forum and topics similar to here, but it is quite new and pretty empty. I started a topic titled "Welcome to our Campfire". So if you are a NESA member and would like a place to discuss topics with fellow Eagles stop on by and sign up.

PS. I am not trying to take you away from Scouter.com, imo this is still the best place for scouts and scouters! Just wanted to let the Eagles know the site is up and running.

scoutldr has it right. With high and tight hair-cuts the beret could look really sharp, fros don't work too well. I own a beret but have never worn it with the uniform, its more of a collectors item. The overseas hat has always suited me well, but I had better have sun tan lotion when its sunny out, and a pair of sunglasses.

I am a real big fan of the Vintage Campaign hat. The older ones that were somewhat crushable, a lot less stiff than today's. I wish BSA would make a crushable campaign hat again. But I have to admit, I have never stuffed it into a backpack due to the fear that it mihgt not ever look the same! I have so many though that I might as well give it a try.

Either way it all comes down to what the boys want to wear, or WB older boys!

  15. Nice Beaver, good strategy!

I figure since most campouts are headed into the country why not listen to country music. Give the boys a new experience on their way to a campout. Pop Country of today is pretty lame. In my 6 cd changer currently is : Hank Williams, Hank Williams, Hank Williams, George Jones, Shooter Jennings, and Willie Nelson.

A good idea is to also let each person in the car bring with them their favorite cd. Everyone can get a tase of what everyone else likes, as long as it is clean. The only problem with this, is I had to listen to Hilary Duff from NY to NH... I'm still recovering...
