  1. Probably not as much. Few things anger liberty-loving Americans as much as taking away their guns. Recall why American militias first gathered to stop the British army from marching on Concord in 1775.

The British knew that disarming a population is the first step in subverting the freedom of a people.

  2. The MBC is supposed to review each scout individually in the camp environment as well. It is impossible to do for some areas that do hundreds of merit badges a week and only have one actual MBC. I don't know the solution.

Do you have one John-in-KC? They probably told you somewhere in your military days you should not make a complaint without offering a solution.

  3. In the Book of Exodus, the Pharaoh was haunted by the presence and increase of the people of Israel and one of the oppressions he ordered on them was to kill their male children to stop their population increase.

There is so much land in the world. You can give each person 1,000 square feet of space and fit the entire population of the world in Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

People are the world's greatest resource.

  4. I assure you I was always there at least as much as they were.

The CD and the PD gave the area directors the discretion on how to allow time off. I saw many areas abuse this privilege. If you cultivate in your staff a pride that in their program area and the fact that they are doing things better than the other ones, they do not mind and even brag about it.

I do not like the idea of staff swimming and shooting while scouts are in program areas.

  5. When I worked at camp we didn't have a staff rec time. There was a siesta when all the scouts returned to their camps after lunch, but all the staff did too.

Staff could get out to other program areas during open program time with the approval of the director. I worked as a young man as you mentioned, three summmers 17-19. I never really participated. Especially not the last two summers when I was the Ecology Director. I had work to do in that area. I didn't let my staff get out much either. Most of them didn't really care too and enjoyed being at Ecology. One would always pester to go shoot and I would let him go on occasion as the range was just down the road.

You should not sell young staff short. If you expect them to be at their place of duty, doing their job during program times they will be there. We all worked many 9am-9pms and more.

  6. Never heard of that. As a director I was busy every night during the week! I don't think I would like a night in the kitchen.

Also never really liked staff heading out to other program areas to shoot, swim, etc. Some of my young Ecology staffers would want to go away often.

I reckon staff should stay in their own areas and provide the best program/services to scouts and scouters.

  7. Thats another thing. Always be on time! And by on time that means at least a couple of minutes early.

When I was an Area Director I made all my instructors wear a watch and they were supposed to start all their classes/activities exactly on time. If there were special conditions, such as the first day with many scouts coming in late, there were, at the start time supposed to notify everyone there that they will be starting a few minutes late and give the reason.
