  1. Okay, I've not tried coloring this, but I suppose you could experiement. Try the following

Pork - cut into small cubes and browned

    potatoes - cut into chunks

Great Northern (white) beans - and/or other white beans to taste

    and

Fresh NEW MEXICO green chilies - not the canned stuff (try http://www.buenofoods.com/)

you could toss in some posole too

(a special corn cooked with lime and dried)

    salt

    pepper

    garlic

    onions

    to taste

Can you tell this is one of those dishes that is never the same twice? No matter what color you make it would definately be different than the standard "red" dishes. Isn't there a gold potato - Yukon Gold or something, might add your gold color.

The Bueno Foods page has a couple of recipies too.

Best of luck with keeping the title!

  2. I agree, as the ceremonies go away so does the interest. I can understand the concern for "hazing" and boys being tapped too hard. But thats where decent adult supervision should intervene. It shouldn't need a whole policy. My son was tapped out in the traditional manner and for him it was an awesome and memorable experience.

We live in Washington state. The boys in our area now are "called out" by OA members after election at a regular troop meeting. Very few of the troops hold the election and then wait for a ceremonies team to come do a special call out. Basically the OA reps that do the election pass on the "you were elected and this is when to show show up for ordeal" info and thats it.

I guess its no surprise that less than half the candidates show up to go through ordeal. Participating just doesn't hold much excitement for the youth here because the OA is not that visible to the majority of Scouts (or their parents)

Ceremonies certainly generated interest in the past. Seeing the OA in action at camporees and summer camp gave younger scouts something to strive for and be a part of. Now it seems like many of them just do it for the patch if at all.

Boys like the special recognition and its a shame that being PC means doing away with time honored tradtion.

  3. Hello list. Forgive me for taking advantage of having this quick forum to pass on this info...

I know the young man the request is for. He is a great kid who is very active in scouts. He's currently working on finishing up his Eagle project. I know he is doing what he can to help his family and I believe he is quite embarassed to have people looking out for him, but thats what the Scout family does, right?!

Please take a minute to read the following. If you have any questions or comments please send them directly to me or Ray Aberle (listed below) rather than posting to the list.

    Thanks.

Subject: A Scout Brother Needs Help NOW!

    Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 00:23:25 -0700

    Brothers,

As I write this, Brother Jeremy and his family are in a desperate financial

situation. Neither of his parents are working right now. They have missed

at least one cycle of payments for water, power, phone, and rent. Who knows how many more they will be able to miss before things start getting shut off.

Right now, Mrs. Kaiser has leads for a nursing job that she will be able to start this fall, after she is done with her current run of community college. However, that still leaves about two months where they are in serious trouble.

Jeremy has given much to our lodge (Sikhs Mox Lamonti 338). His trip to the National Jamboree this summer is causing financial strain upon his family, however, there is no chance of him backing out at this point and gaining a

full refund. (commitment was made before major financial problems set in & our contingent does not have a scout fund available)

Brothers, I write you now seeking help. I know that due to the Scouting commitments of many here, financial resources are limited. Many of you work summers at Fire Mountain (or other scout camps), and thus have little money

from that. How many of you, though, live with the knowledge that you have a roof over your head, and power, water, and a phone?

Right now, the Kaiser's don't have that luxury.

If you have even a few dollars to spare, and would be willing to assist the Kaisers in their time of need, I know that they would be very appreciative. Of course, this is not tax deductible in any way, nor can you expect to get

any of it back. You will, though, get the warm fuzzy feeling that you are helping our Lodge Activities VC able to work with us still. You help him attend Jamboree, and have a house still upon his return.

    Jeremy's mailing address is:

    Kaisers

    19 217th Place SE

    Bothell, WA 98021

If you would prefer to remain anonymous from Jeremy and his family, I ask that you send any donation to myself, and I will send it along to his family. My address is:

    Ray Aberle

    15021 78th Avenue NE

    Kenmore, WA

    ray@aberle.net

For any who help the Kaisers in their time of need, I will be willing to give you a patch out of my personal collection. And yes, I will make sure I grab valuable ones. Just ask for a patch when you send your donation.

On that same token, if you would prefer to get something physical in exchange, please let me know. I am willing to sell any and all of my patches in order to help Jeremy and his family. To me, they are just pieces of cloth, but to Jeremy and his family, it might mean keeping them housed for the month.

Once again, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I don't usually send requests like this, as you all should know, but I feel that the need is great and the risks are greater. Jeremy knows that I am going to do something to help, but he doesn't know what.

Please, help one of our brothers in need. Also, please pass this message along in its entirety to anyone whom I might have missed.

Yours in the Spirit of Service towards Others,

  4. I see no problem with the kids wearing the camo type pants when we're on campouts. They are generally more suitable for rugged wear. The full camo get-up is not encouraged though.

And we make it clear - No camo out in public - only regulation uniforms. If the boy doesn't have scout pant then he is allowed to wear suitable dress pants or jeans.

I agree that Scout uniforms are very expensive and not well suited to outdoor use.

  5. Merlyn_LeRoy -

You are comparing apples to oranges.

The membership criteria is right up front. Duty to God - your choice of a God, whether it be mine "or a tree"... Tolerance of different types of religion IS promoted.

Your commment "Well, I guess you'd have no problem with public schools running "no Jews" youth groups either" is completely inappropriate to Scouting philosophy.

Would YOU have a problem with the schools NOT discriminating against child abusers and other criminals? How about groups that promote hatred?

  6. I orginally posted this in the open forum, but perhaps it would be more appropriate here.

    Scouts & Discrimination

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont know if this is a national policy or not, but I thought Id share the info with the rest of you....

Today a Scout from our local troop went to Sears to inquire about a donation for his Eagle Project. The manager of the Sears store told him that because of the current discrimination issues Sears is no longer making donations to Boy Scouts.

I love my Craftsman tools...but this gives me pause about doing further business with Sears.

Anyone else been turned away for similar requests and reasons - where and why?

And if you're really interested some non-Scout responses, I posted the same issue at Military.com http://forums.military.com/1/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=frm&s=78919038&f=415197802

  8. I am forwarding this message for a Life Scout. Please respond directly to me. I will pass on the information:

    Hi,

I am trying to build a playground for my church for my Eagle project. My church is very small and has no funds for a playground. I thought it would be a good project since the church also has a low income preschool and right now the kids don't have any outdoor area to play.

I am looking for ideas from anyone and everywhere so I don't have to spend too much on buying a kit or a big project plan.

I was someone might be able to share plans that they have used in the past. Thank you for your help.
