  1. Im sorry I didnt see this earlier.

I spent 2 weeks Camping in Baton Rouge with my Ambulance Company. We were hosted by a Church/School/Knights of Columbus, and their Boy Scout Troop. My tent was borrowed from the Scout Troop, and while I didnt get much of a chance to interact with the scouts, I just wanted to say Thanks to the unit, and to thank them for being so Helpful, Friendly, and Kind, in helping feed us, as well as letting us use their meeting space for sleeping quarters.

I cant remember the troop, but how many Knights of Columbus are there in Baton Rouge, and how many had a bunch of EMTs and Medics in their front yard???

    Thanks,

  2. Im currently a member of the District Committee, and havent really received any training as an adult. There is also a possibility I will become a scoutmaster in a local troop soon, but that isnt finalized.

Im curious as to what training courses I should attend, both ASAP and in the future. Ive started to list a couple of things, and am looking for input, and also trying to find out what Ive got to do to put that pretty trained strip on my uniform.

OhIve already re-done my Youth Protection Training online.

I have an opportunity to go to the Basic Troop Committee Training this weekend would this really be useful?

I would like to do the Scoutmaster Fundamentals course soon.

At some point in the next few years, Id like to do Wood badge.

    Thanks,

  3. Im a big guy, and looking for scout color pants to wear while camping, etc. I find that the crotch of my pants tends to wear out and I would like to save my expensive scout pants for formal occasions. I know the uniform police will probably shoot me for this post, but what is the 8th point of the scout law? (Thrifty)

Does anyone have a suggestion as to brands and colors??? One of my next steps is to call a uniform supply Co. in California, and see what trousers they have in LA County Sheriffs Green (I believe it is the same shade). Any other suggestions???

  4. I spent some time in a troop like this. My troop loved the idea of a "boy run troop" Until they realized that THEIR boys didn't want to run the troop, and the new SPL did want to run the troop. There was a lot of strife, and my family, and my best friend - the New SPL, and a few other scouts moved on to another troop.

Committe Training is needed, as is some beating over the head with hiking staffs. Is it going to kill the troop if THIS YEAR's webelos go somewhere else? Prpbably not, just make sure you've got some den chiefs in place and trained to help get NEXT YEARS webelos.

If the scouts don't want to do Camporee, they don't have to. If the scouts want to go winter camping someplace different, or even go to a different summer camp, they should discuss, and have some good reasons, but it should be allowed.

Camporees and Klondikes are very good scouting events, and perhaps it should be suggested that your scouts do it at least every other year? And, for any scouts intrested, many places have "youth staff" for the camporees, and that could be a good thing for a couple of scouts that REALLY want to go to the camporee to do.

As for the Fall Foliage hike.... I love the idea. While winter camping is an important skill to learn, a backpacking trip is much easier in slightly more mild conditions.

  5. The website listed isnt correct. http://hsr-bsa.org is the winter /weekend camping site currently.

Horseshoe is a great camp, and I have many fond memories of the Reservation (which is 2 camps: Horseshoe and Camp John H. Ware III). I was on staff in 1999, and camped with my troop for 6 separate years. I love the camp. How can you forget the Retreat Ceromony every night, or being on the flagpole hill detail one night, and PROPERLY folding a HUGE American flag with a dozen scouts. The view from Chapel Hill is amazing. They have a great COPE course and mountain biking for older scouts, and a great trailblazers program for new scouts.

In short, if you go once, you will want to go back.

  6. I used to own a nice red turtleneck, and my father and brother still wear them. Since I am now a district Committe member, I wear a white turtleneck under my short-sleeve shirt.

Another point to make, regarding uniforms. In my council, our summer camp issues the 3" patch with segments, and these can only really be worn on one shirt. It is a matter of pride for scouts to show off how many circles of segments they've earned.

The uniforms I currently own are 2 short-sleeve shirts (1 venture, 1 scout) and 1 pair of uniform pants. I'll buy the shorts in the spring, and look on Ebay until then.

  7. My family (and ME, at one point) has been the the situation of the special needs scout.

My initial, gut reaction is DO NOT KICK HIM OUT. It sounds like the group egged each other on to do something... and the scout gave them the "show" they wanted. I have no doubt that "karate kid" is scared.. but maybe not of the special needs kid, but what the group will pressure him into next?

kicking the special needs scout out will not accomplish much... the group of scouts will probably still fight.. the ADHD kid is not "the whole problem" maybe part of the problem... but it takes two to tango...

This is likely the ADHD kid's only social interaction other than school and perhaps church.

Talk with the scout's parent (assuming only Mom at the moment). See if parent can come to all activities... I've seen it done where a scout's father had to be present at all troop functions his son attended, because of similar issues. If Mom can't, or isn't the right person... maybe an uncle or other adult he will listen to. Talk with the school folks and Mom.... the child may benifet from having some form of aide.... one with the right training and an open mind might enjoy helping the child at scout meetings......

  8. "Welcome. It's great to have young guys like yourself stay involved with the program. I stayed involved up until I got married (age 22). Then was gone for a while. Being an EMT is a bonus for whatever unit is lucky enough to have you a part of it."

    Thanks all for your welcome.

Being an EMT is definatly a bonus for my brother's troop... but not really for me... 2 weeks ago, we had a troop get-together at a local dairy farm that makes Ice Cream.... somehow, one of the scouts got stung by a bee.... So who gets to do first aid? not the scouts with First Aid Merit badge... they come to me....

Its all good. I love the forums so far, but there are too many topics to read them all

  9. I'm just about the same size. I'm a little larger than a few years back when I was an active youth memeber, and I've gotten most of my stuff off of ebay. Make sure you verify patches that were on the shirt before.... My dad (smaller) got a scout's shirt with a small tear where an arrow of light was removed. That made it unsuitable for adult wear, but still good for any youth member that could offset their arrow of light to cover the hole.

Also--- beware of smoker's uniforms...discolored and smelly, often...

  10. "We have many Scouts in the 18-21 yr old category and aside for the role as an ASM should these Scouts be allowed to sit on District Committees with the same authority as post 21 yr olds? District Eagle Boards of Review? "

    I don't know.

I'm 20, and this will be my first year on district Committee. I was invited to the District's last Eagle BOR as an observer, but was unable to attend. The hope of the District Advancement guy is that I would start to serve on the BOR's after I've seen some, and "feel comfortable"

I'm also going to be part of the troop committee of a new troop being formed that my brother will be involved in. My Father will be an ASM, and my Mother will likely play a leading role on the committee... I would just be there as an extra experienced body.

  11. Hi, all.

My name is Jon. I'm 20 years old. I've been an EMT for 4 years, and am most of the way through paramedic school. I'm also an amateur radio operator.

I've been involved with scouts since 2nd grade (I think... I started as a Wolf Cub Scout). I had the experience of being labeled as a "trouble" scout because of my reactions to teasing. As a 16/17 year old, I was in 3 troops within one year. I eventually lost intrest, and, although I achived Life just after my 15th birthday, I never finished the requirements for my Eagle badge. I moved on, and stayed active in scouts until my 18th birthday as a Fire Explorer at my Volunteer Fire Company.

I've been active in the past with a camp-based Amateur radio station and club, and have served on both science camp staff and also as a council camp CIT.

About 6 years ago, I was recruited by one of the district leaders of another local district (My brother is now in a troop in that district) to serve on the fall camporee staff and run the jamboree on the air station (JOTA). Either my father or I have helped at all of the fall camporee's he has been affaliated with... both council and district since.

More recently, I've been drafted as the / one of the designated "medical guy(s)" for the last 3 years. I enjoy it.

I'm now registered as a district committe member in the district that has welcomed me with open arms.

Anyway, I like what I've seen so far on the fourms.

  12. Wow. This is rather serious.

What about contacting the student's school guidance counslor? Perhaps He/She has a suggestion on how to handle the problem.

Perhaps the boy in question could be asked to not only be clean for X months before his Eagle BOR, but also "strongly request" that he present a project / discussion on "Why Alcohol is bad for you"
