  1. I have to comment on spanking.

I read a book when my son was born called 'Dare to discipline' It was a 100 plus page book with all but one page on when not to hit a child on that one page was a very small list. When the child is in danger (very small kid and hot stove was the example I think) and the other was attacking parental authority. I used that book and had to spank my son less then 5 times since he was about 6. He is 15 and I havn't hit him since he was 9 or ten. Spanking should be only a last resort. If one slap on the rear does not do the trick I felt that more would not (It always worked). That is my kid, some require more control then others and too much control could be a problem. I do not agree that any spanking at all is not good. But if you have not installed values by the time the child is 5 or 6 no amount of spanking will help. BTW the rest of the book was very good. It stessed the value of the word no.

On the porn issue, I don't know. I do know there was quite a lot of it on the Sub I was on in the Navy and non of the crew had ever gotten in any trouble. Maybe all sex offenders had porn but not every one who reads porn is a sex offender.

  2. This just in.

Court says Berkeley may end free berthing for scouts

    The Associated Press

A group affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America lost its legal bid Monday to continue to get free berthing at Berkeley Marina.

The city of Berkeley halted free berthing for the Sea Scouts in 1998 because of the scout's membership and leadership policies against gays. The scouts sued Berkeley and the San Francisco-based 1st District Court of Appeal said the scouts did not have a case.

Berkeley has provided free berthing for about six decades after the scouts permitted Berkeley to use rocks from a Boy Scout camp for fill in the marina.

The city stopped free access after it passed a 1997 ordinance forbidding the city from subsidizing groups that discriminate.

The scouts maintained that Berkeley's move, among other things, infringed on their free association rights and their rights of speech.

The court said the scouts, regardless of whether they get free berthing, can continue, under the First Amendment, to discriminate against gays. That notion has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Berkeley's actions have not required appellants to stop discriminating," the court said.

The appeals panel said Berkeley, in turn, is not discriminating against the scouts. The court said Berkeley is allowing the scouts to berth at the city marina, but is now charging $516 per month.

The case is Evans v. Berkeley, A097187.

  3. Merlyn

currently, Jews have to take personal holidays for Yom Kippur

but get Dec. 25th off, essentially forcing non-Christians to

take days off of the majority religion and losing some of their

vacation days to take holidays that have real religious meaning

    to them.

I have worked on Christmas specifically to allow my Christian Co-Workers to have the day off. To me and Judaism it is a good deed. It is also live and let live, which many zero tolerance activists seem to not understand.

  4. On 11/15/02 I received the following from the Jewish Committee on Scouting email list.

"Sometime on Wednesday night the USSSP server, which hosts the US Scouting

Service Project family of web sites (including usscouts.org,

    macscouter,org, netcommish.org, cubmaster.org, and jambo01.org), plus

jewishscouting.org went offline. As of tonight, we do not know the cause,

or how long we'll be down, but it will probably be no earlier than Monday

    before we're back on line."

  5. I am not A Lawyer but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last week. :)

If the government at a military base would not sponsor a Troop on the basis of the fact that BSA is Faith based isn't that by definition also against freedon of religion? The base must be involved because of security issues. Thus all groups that are for the good of the service are alowed.

  6. I think the reason they are not monitoring the bathrooms is a YPP issue. (Or whatever the schools would call it) Being alone with a child etc. In high school the students are not taking showers any more after PE because there is no monitoring and a change in modisty in boys. What kind of lesson in health does this teach? Norms change but not for the better sometimes.

  7. Have you contacted my local council? Great Trails Council the phone is (413)684 3542. They have a camp ground in Chesterfield Mass there are buidlings that are can be rented (if not taken already). The camp is about an hours plus drive to Jiminy Peak or other ski resorts in the area.

  8. Found a wolf pack down the steet that meets the day before scout night. The den and the pack are very happy. My son starts next week and can get there on his own if necessary. I will keep you all posted. Thanks :-)

  9. The 1973 war in the Middle East. I was in the USN at the time (1970-1976) on a Survey ship in the Med. We were visiting a US base in Spain at the time. It got very scary when the Marines set up shop on our pier. We could move around but the rest of the base was on alert on lock down. We were Navy, but not involved but we were there. We went to sea on schedule the war had ended. If it hadn't we would have been toast if Russia had gotten involved and things got out of hand. To this day I feel the policy of MAD (deterrence) worked.
