  1. How would you handle pornography found at meetings/campouts?

These kids today have many more ways to get this stuff and hide it than ever before. They can store this stuff on their media players, after downloading it from the 'Net, as well as it being sent to their cell phones by their friends, girl friends via "sexting", which is sending nude pictures of themselves to others.

Does your pack/troop/crew have a no pornography policy?

How would you handle this, other than banning these electronic devices?

  2. What are your thoughts on having a camporee dedicated entirely on seeing how many meritbadges the boys can earn in a weekend, with prizes going to that effect?

A troop in a neighboring district has been doing a small version for years and now that district wants to do it.

  3. The Scout in question is a "paper" scout, that is to say that he does the written requirements, but doesn't want to do anything about character building. He has about 35 merit badges, but they were done with his dad for the most part.

In watching and trying to interface with the youth, I can certainly see why he would get less than positive reviews.(This message has been edited by Petem)

  4. I was at a camporee this past weekend and on Saturday, before the opening ceremonies got under way, the camporee director had a scheduled SPL meeting to go over the camporee events, as well as give out some general camporee information. When my spl got back to camp, he said that the camporee director said that due to the weather (It was raining very heavily as well as a thunderstorm going on), that the morning flag ceremony and opening ceremonies were being canceled. I told the SPL that we were going to the parade grounds anyway. When we got there, there were about 5 other troops present and we waited for the camporee director to get there. When he got there, he said that flags were canceled due to the weather, that he didn't want anyone trying to put up flags onto a pole in the middle of a thunderstorm. He also said that this info was given to the SPL's at their meeting earlier that morning. Was he correct in making the statement that you don't put up flag when there is a rainstorm going on?

    What do you all think?

  5. One question I would ask is:

Are you ready to have about one hour a week left for your family?

This isn't a joke question, but one that asks how much time a week the candidate is willing to give to the troop. We all know that it isn't one hour a week is all it takes to be a scout leader, I mean, the troop meetings alone are 90 minutes long.

Something for the candidate to think about.

  6. OGO,

I really liked the poem called "The Bridge Builder"

It is one that I can read by myself without any problems, but when I tried to read it at a Court of Honor recently, I got all choked up. (as did a few of the other Scouters in the room).

    Thanks for sharing.

    Pete
