From the Fire'n Chit

1. I have read, understand and use fire safety rules from the Boy Scout Handbook.

2. I will build a campfire only when necessary and when I have the necessary permits (regulations vary by locality).

3. I will minimize campfire impacts or use existing fire lays consistent with the principles of Leave No Trace. I will check to see that all flammable material is cleared at least 5 feet in all directions from fire (total 10 feet).

4. I will safely use and store fire-starting materials.

5. I will see that fire is attended to at all times.

6. I will make sure that water and/or shovel is readily available. I will promptly report any wildfire to the proper authorities.

7. I will use the cold-out test to make sure the fire is cold out and will make sure the fire lay is cleaned before I leave it.

8. I follow the Outdoor Code and the principles of Leave No Trace.

I like SSScout's idea! How about some type of task to fill a bucket by building a pipeline (no glue) from hose to bucket using the parts from Home Depot. Low pressure on the hose and the task has to happen while the water is on. Now not all the parts are going to fit together and some might leak (small holes drilled in them).

Just picked up two more "Grease Pot"s at KMART and both were aluminium. Are you sure TAHAWK you were at right ones?

The "Grease Pot" is a black (on the outside ) aluminium container with the word "Grease" embossed into the lid. The name Kmart gives it is "Grease Strainer" and the label has this part number 0-40734012-4.(This message has been edited by oldisnewagain1)

SSScout, one thing you might try for a light weight pot is "the grease pot" from Kmart. A friend that hikes the AT often recommend it and I have to say it is a reasonable alternative for around 6 bucks..

I also also seen some large aluminum can pots used (modified fosters, Heineken empties) but I not so sure if you would do anything beyond boiling water in them.

If I understand you correctly, if a troop mandates, as one troop in our town does, the Scout uniform is long scout pants, short sleeve shirt, scout socks, and black shoes this is the official uniform?

Would I also be out of uniform in long sleeve scout shirt, scout shorts, scout knee socks and hiking boots?

Since this troops also mandates 7 different "class B" shirts, am I out of uniform if I wore the wrong color that day?

Perhaps it is my age that plays tricks on this old mind but I wonder, can we really judge a Scout by the way one wears the uniform?

Does my centennial uniform hold more weight that the one I wore with Red applets. If I chose to wear the forest green with and red beret of the Leadership Corps will I be a social outcast?

What if I wore the uniform worn by an American Scout of 1910? Would that be acceptable considering there wasnt an official uniform until 1913? (There was a uniform available in the 1911 first Supply Department catalog but there was no mention of the official status by the Committee on Badges, Awards, and Equipment until 1913.)

Is it the offical uniform that makes the troop or the experience, learning and fun a youth takes away with them in adulthood?

Secondly, congratulations on having a wife that is so supportive of Scouting!

But as to something special Boy Scout style, how about asking your PLC if they would consider doing something special for you both. I think they could surprise you with their resourcefulness. Now, that doesn't a excuse you for having something special planned also...

How big is our council?

It depends on your point of view...

If you on the outside looking in, we are a small council.

If you are on the inside, it is too bleeping big...

The problem for me is all meetings (except at a district level)are held in the eastern most part of the council. For some districts, the travel time is not an issue (under 1/2 hour) but for the western most district the travel time is greatly increased. As a result, there is very little participation from Scouters in the council from that district. The upside (and downside) is this district is learning to function as it's own little island doing their own thing or along with other near-by councils.
