  1. 6 figures you say. and car that needs a paint job??????? Oh dear.....

How is that relevant to the discussion.

Does that mean your better than us or have a higher standards or you parenting skills are somehow better????????

The good old days, so you didn't like my analogy.

My point is give the kids some room to be kids. Let them get dirty, sweat, bruised and tired. They spend most of their lives being lectured and protected.

I love returning the boys after an outing smiling, dirty, smelly, and exhausted. Adventure that is why they joined Cub Scouts

  2. Lets see, I had a couple of broken arms, several sets of stitches, bloody noses, bruises, contusions, poison ivy, poison oak, nettles, bee, wasp, hornet stings and other boyhood issues. Yes a couple of concussions too. Did that make my parents bad, nope.

I was a country boy, I fell out of trees, barns, embankments, bikes, tractors and minibikes, a few fights, crushed by hay bails and on and on and on and on. All though the venue for these boys activities was not optimal, they were just being boys.

Most Cubs are city kids give them a little bit of space.

  3. The only problem I see is that it passed tech inspection. Seems the inspectors weren't very thorough. I assume once thru tech the cars were impounded. If that was the case he shouldn't have been disqualified. It was the inspectors bad.

I think I would have offered him the current BSA wheels and let his cub race.

If the car was doctored after tech then dq is in order.

  4. Kari......most older boy scouts have figured out what fund raising they need to do. While some will choose to help the troop out by participating in fund raising their final year, many will not.

Fund raising is a sore spot in scouting. If your complaining about it now your next 6 years or so are going to be very long.

Beavah is spot on........If your son is going to participate with the Troop then fund raising is in order and not out of line. If he is not joining the troop then don't participate. Pretty simple concept.

Questions to ask about fund raising

    1. What is the money for?

    2. What is the Total $$$ goal?

    3. Is Participation being tracked?

    4. Is the money for Individual or Troop Usage?

    5. Is there a buy out amount? If you elect to not participate can you donate a specific $$

    instead.

I think the Christmas Tree sale maybe a bit early for the weebs to participate and may be counter productive in that it would case away perspective scouts.

  5. I have to second, where are their adult partners?????

They are 6 year old young men. You cannot expect them to sit quietly for an hour or during the meeting. They have an attention span of 5 minutes dependent on topic and time of day. Plan for this and understand it.

Poor behavior stems from adults not understanding those we serve and poorly planned meetings.

    Keep the meeting fast paced.

Things take half as long as you planned

Keep it to things the boys like and enjoy.

After sitting in school all day they are not gonna sit.

    Games......lots of games.

Let the boys socialize and play with each other.

I would not lecture the group of adults, no point in it and you will simply tick them off. I have pulled individual parents a side and asked them not to give little Johnny mountain dew before the meeting.

  6. Interesting.....No clue what to do in the out doors

How about a Natural scavenger hunt?

    Hiking?

Bring a football or kick ball the boys will play for hours

Plant and Animal ID by track sound or scat

    Games abound

    Tent setting up contest

    knot tying

As suggested a good turn project will be good

    Camp fire songs and skits

Scouts own service sunday morning for the camping part of the rank advancment.

Don't be afraid to let them have some free time to explore the outdoors.

  7. Sure they can match paint, but not the kind we use. If he wants to cheat that bad, let him cheat. The could probably replicate the marking we make on the bottom of wood block.

Lets face it, we are just trying to keep honest people honest.

  8. How about more information?

    When is it being closed?

Why is it being closed? How about a link to the document siting closure?

Is it being closed and sold or just closed for a few years.

why or how is it scout friendly?

Just curious, your petition and post didn't include much information that would make me want to lend my support...

  9. I had a couple of horrible summers with both human and dog pit bulls. There was a grandson raising fighting dogs in his grandma's backyard and garage. The dogs were either turned loose or escaped, got chased back into my house one night while taking the trash cans to the curb. The dog was charging the door and crashing into it...... He was dealt with and I received a visit from LEO. Evidently you actually need to be attacked before you can take care of business.

Basically at dark you needed to be inside your house with the doors and windows locked and curtains drawn. A horrible way to live and it took 14 months for the city to work thru the legal process.

LE raided the house found evidence of fighting and removed/destroyed the dogs and charged the grandson. Grandma has since passed away and the house sold to a rental agency who puts new government paid low income families in the house twice a year.

Gangs, yep have those too, The young men and women involved typically come from single, no parent homes. They tag our fences and building, set fires and shoot things and people. LE knows who they are and it is being worked currently. Flee to the suburbs, Nope.

Just because I dwell in the cellar doesn't mean I don't need some sun light from time to time. Nice to sit on the deck with some summer shandy after mowing the grass.

  10. You have never lived in a neighborhood infested with pit bulls. I am forced to mow my yard with a side arm, enjoying the deck in the evening. You guessed with a side arm. The neighborhood figured out where they were coming from and got Law enforcement involved.

With your analogy, I have no use for Pit Bulls or people you equate to Pit Bulls.

While you are correct that All Pits are not bad, is it worth the risk you life and limb.

    Nope.

The internet a forums like this have killed debate and discussion. Nothing more fun than a spirited discussion among friends.

  11. We always have extra wheels because of lost, broken or just flat bad, Same for axles.

We don't just leave them hanging.

Far as spending more on power tools. We bring the shop to meeting. I also have several work nights at my home and several other adult hold shop nights.

The tools parable comes to mind as well Teach a man to fish and...........Teach a man to use a credit card and........

Of course there is a lot of different ways to do things..........None is right.

  12. Now is it exactly cheating, depends on the rules presented by the Pack before the race. It is very sportsman like. and very un-scout like.

We used the only parts provided by pack rule. We paint the inside of the wheels a yearly custom mix color and mark the bottoms of the block with a special symbol that must remain visible.

This was after a similar experience with a purchased win.

So what lesson is being learned by the $100 ebay car. That money overcomes most all obstacle. That is not the intended lesson, but a lesson none the less.

Yep the old rich beating up on the poor lesson.

  13. Interesting, then I have experienced a Unit Commissioner Overstepping his bounds.

I witnessed a heated argument between a UC, CM and CC about Pack financial record keeping. He said that if the books were not straightened out he would shut us down. So now I understand that he has no power to do any of it. Scouting is more screwed up than I ever realized.

    Let me see.

Manipulative DE, who cares for absolutely nothing more than his numbers, including scout safety.

Power Hungry Dictator of a CM whose son does nothing wrong including bullying and physical harm to other scouts, nope never happened.

CC who is worried more about his rank and role in the Charter Organization, and pissing of the CM who is an elder in the church, leaving him powerless to do his job.

COR who is also afraid of the CM and wife combo.

Treasure, the CM wife who can't/won't provide a treasure report.

The UC who is power mongering, a Bully and exceeding his job mandate.

    Thank god I left.

This non-sense makes me wonder about humanity and people.

Power corrupts, even the those with the purist of intentions.

  14. the entry fee could just be to cover the cost of the kit.

We pay for advancement and such out of dues with are $1 per week. The Den leaders have an envelop and attendance sheet that is turned in each week to the treasurer. We also popcorn, candy bars and various other misc fundraisers. We have treasurer report at each monthly committee meeting.

So when is the last time you have seen a treasurers report? with the current bank statement.

As for a Treasurers report. If they say no or cannot provide one then a call to your units commissioner is needed. Basically the Unit Commissioner can and will shut a Pack down if anything is out of order with the books.

Trust me been there done than. You can truly trust no one.

  15. Wow, I have no idea what I would do.

No secrets with in the Troop. Give the boys the actual story, what they will make up or imagine will be worse than the truth.

I would never attempt to counsel the young man or family myself. I would continue to do my job with in the troop and make myself available to the young man.

I am sure that the Police and social services are involved by now. So they will be receiving counciling.

I am betting it was pretty ugly in the home.

  16. I agree with what was said above, His Eagle his choice. Just shows how little they think of the award.

While some on this forum don't view Eagle as much of an award. Being an Eagle Scout still means a lot to people outside of scouting. I have seen a number of young men complete it for just another line on a college resume or even just to earn a scholarship.

Not in the scouting spirit. It is a shame that is possible for them to still earn it. Fewer eagles not more, make it mean something again.

  17. Yep, at that point in life, a young man thinks a lot about that sort of thing. This was before explorers or we didn't have an explorer/venture crew.

Our patrol flag was not permitted, by our council, to be used at the national jamboree.

Glad you saw the humor in it Beavah.

  18. This time of year a Weeb 2 den should be winding down. They are all leaving Cub Scouts in a couple of months and should have the AOL completed for the most part. As you eluded to, this time of year should be reserved for visiting Troops to determine where the boys will cross over too.

Now if your referring to the Weeb 1 den falling apart in the transistion to Weeb 2. I am unsure about martial arts and scouting, you may refer to the Guide to safe scouting.

I see a lot of city activities.

What about the outdoor activities? Hiking Camping, and woodcraft

Less book and lecture work more outdoor, go see, active work.

  19. You cannot force them do read it.

We have a webpage, updated weekly.

We have an on line calendar

We have a Weekly Newsletter with events and up coming activities

We have weekly announcements at the weekly meetings.

We have a phone tree for up coming activities.

We still get parents that say they have no idea what the Pack is doing.

At the beginning of the year we provide a contact sheet with web page information.

Adults need to act like adult. Leave a message, I bet the leader will call back. I have parents like that, I check my missed calls and call them back. That's just me.

It is ashamed that come cubs must pay the price for poor parenting and lack of interest by parents.

We have weekly meetings unless you receive a call and/or email to the contrary. I better never receive a call like that.
