  1. Everyone here has the right idea. The OA is NOT a "secret organization". The reason for the secrecy is as other here have stated is to enhance the induction process, to make worth while to go thru with the Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Vigil. As far as parents are concerned I personally dont like them around. Its there son achievement let them have son privacy and enjoy the honor that has be bestowed upon them. Our lodge had a incident at lets years Ordeal where a father cam to the Pre Ordeal Ceremony and was video taping the ceremony and he was a past Arrowman for a Lodge in the mainland (were in Hawaii) he had made commits quite loudly towards the Ceremony Team that they Werent to bad for a Hawaiian Lodge and the Ceremony Team was crushed they had put in so much hard work. Needless to say there were 3 members that we on a Conclave Ceremony Team that came 1st place. One member had on month to get the part down because a boys family had planed trip one month before the Ordeal. He pulled it off perfectly like he had done it a hundred times. Needless to say I was a little POD as the Ceremony Team Coach & Associate Lodge Adviser. I asked the Lodge Staff Adviser to take care of this problem because I didnt feel that I would have handled it properly. I would like to raise another question why do parents have to feel that they have to be evolved in every aspect of the sons scouting?

  2. In regards to ps56k post about scout with ranks 1st class, Star, and Life. And not attending campouts, meetings, events, COH, etc. This is when the SM as the right to take the Scouts name off the election ballot. He can use the Scout Spirit requirement. But once he approves the list of eligible Scout of election then he no longer has a say.

  3. As a Ceremonies Team Coach and a Associate Lodge Adviser, I tell my team members that when it is time to give the admonition they should say it clearly and slowly and not in a whisper. I felt that it was ok to say it out loud because everyone there in the line will hear it anyway and everyone there should be OA members. Our Lodge uses the admonition as the password for entrance to your Lodge Meetings and if they have no idea what the admonition is (because it was whispered and mumbled) how are they going to learn it because its not in the OA Handbook anymore.

  4. Unc,

A very touching story. I am sadden for your loss. I too am a pet lover, and don't have and children yet. Still time only 29. I have two dogs the older is about 8 now and showing her age and that is my baby. The younger one is about 4. I dont know what I am going to do when I loose her. There pretty close to being real children they fight over toys, and just can be so naughty! I want to take them on camping trips but I'm to over protective. Dont want any thing to happen so I leave them home with the "mom"

Anyway thanks for allowing me to brag about my "kids"

And Unc keep your head up!oneday I'll be in your position (hopefully not in a long time) and I'll need to talk about it too!!

    Aloha,

  5. In our council the camporee is a skills competition. Webelos are not included in it at all. The Webelos there own skills competition (Webeloree). As far as the recruitment part the put it in a very public place ie: Side of a main highway to grab son free attention.
