  1. At the bottom of the article there is a link to 70 responses to this article. The author, a student working on his doctorate, writes well. I'll agree, McCarthy was a scuzzy, loathsome, self-serving politician. He almost seems as a model for many Reps and Senators serving themselves in Congress today. Here is Pack with his beret. http://www.cheguevara.com/ Here is another link to the responses. I haven't read through all of them, but it seems to me, after all the emotional gas is emitted, that he was effective in rooting out commies in government and hollywood. Responses to the article. Copy and paste the URL to read the differing opinions. Bon apetite? What is that about?

    Mr. Rifkin's delusions (#16479)

by Bill Heuisler on August 13, 2003 at 3:50 PM

    Mr. Rifkin,

How do such delusions exist in this Age of Information? Fever-dreams and anti-McCarthy wishes don't count on a History Site. Research is simple in libraries or search engines. The Venona program has been existence for over fifty years. Decoding began in 1946 - is still being released - and over 300 Americans have been identified as Soviet agents for Stalin's Worker's Paradise. Over 2200 messages between Moscow and trade reps, diplomats, KGB and GRU Residencies have been decoded since 1946 by the Venona program based in Arlington Hall. An analyst named Meredith Gardner broke the code in the summer of 1946 and General Carter Clarke contacted the FBI. Agent Robert Lamphere then worked full-time with Arlington Hall analysts and reported to FBI Director Hoover. Hoover worked closely with McCarthy, etc, etc. Stop dreaming. Look up information or appear empty-headed.

  3. Your first definition is a little on the biased side, eh, Pack? The censure? Sounds as if someone was miffed at him. He may have been a disgusting, self-serving, pig of a politician, but it seems with these files and transcripts opened up, history should evolve. Whatever his sources were he seems to have been right on target with one or two misses. These weren't people trying to change something like "Under God" from the Pledge, they were personnel in government or in the entertainment industry actively supply intelligence to and creating propaganda for the USSR. Sending money to the Sierra Club is one thing, but sending info, performing missions, and sending funds to the USSR during the Cold War is treason and should have resulted in a firing squad. McCarthy seems to have been right on target on who he identified.

  4. "The McCarthy Era has been written into college and high school curriculums and even government history standards as a time of witch-hunts instead of a time of fifth column treason for the same reason. The opening of the Soviet archives and the release of the Venona decrypts have established beyond any reasonable doubt that McCarthys so-called victims with few exceptions (James Wechsler would be one) -- were people who either served the intelligence agencies of the biggest mass murderer(Stalin)in history or supported the despotic empire he built, or were fellow-travelers of the same."

There is a slight difference between wanting to change environmental policies and supporting the actively assisting the Soviets, our mortal enemies. They should have been hung.

  5. Why would you have a problem with the McCarthy hearings? Our fathers, uncles, and grandfathers were squared off against the Russians in the Fulda Gap. We fought Red China in Korea. We fought communists in Vietnam. Cuba. Nicaragua.

McCarthy rooted out card carrying members of both communist organizations and the communist party from government and television.

If you belonged to organizations that were hell-bent on the destruction of our country and our way of life, you should be nervous.

  6. To me personally, I don't think this is a fight worth fighting or generating one press release of bad publicity. I'd be done with anything to do with Indian lore. Voyaguers, explorers, mountain men, and pioneers all camped. Maybe create a new organization with a Patriot theme, the Liberty Tree, Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere, etc.

Begin new with a different theme.

  7. Well, we were up on Lake Michigan this past weekend out for our last sail of the year. Sunny, 90 degrees, winds SE 15, gusting to low 20's, waves 2-4, visibility 1.5 miles. We came out of the harbor and went south east to put the sails up. We learned a lesson that other boats didn't necessarily assemble the same as ours. Well we blew past that obstacle and came about and header north with the wind. A much better cruise.

I think the weather was awesome, except the waves just beat the snot out of us. Whenever the waves are over 3 feet, we're going to stay in the harbor and race 420's or go to a smaller lake. We had to see a few 6 footers in there too. If I (we) ever see 6 footers again in that size of sailboat (27' Catalina) it will be too soon.

Anyway, about an hour into our cruise a lone sailor on a Hoby Catamaran hails us, asking if we have a radio. I said we did. He says, "I lost my friend." We thought he may have been in another Cat, but he clarified that his buddy had fallen overboard off of his catamaran and he lost sight of him. I asked, "where?" He shrugged his shoulders. So we initiated the Mayday. "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" This is Sea Scout Sailing vessel Trustworthy and we have a man in the water. The USCG at first thought we had the man overboard. Negative, the overboard is off a Catamaran, he is 30 year old male, in a wet suit and blue and yellow life vest. We had a little communications problem due to us not having a GPS and me naming the incorrect lighthouse as a reference point, but we finally got it straightened out. He was in the drink about 15 minutes when we were hailed. I let them know that Sea Scout Sailing vessels Trustworthy and Loyal were beginning to search to the north. A few minutes later, the Sheriff's boat arrived on scene, made contact with us and joined the search, after that the Coast Guard boat arrived and began the search and then soon after a helicopter arrived out of Milwaukee and joined the search. When the Coast Guard OIC reported the search status over the radio to his hq, he said he had two USCG boats, the helo, Sheriff Boat 1, and the Sea Scouts in Trustworthy and Loyal. We searched for about an hour and a half along side the CG and Sheriff's Dept, when the CG reported that the guy was found north of where we were searching. Alive. Our guys were all business during the search. I told the Bosn's Mate that if we find the guy, I'll do the check compressions and he can do the mouth to mouth. He didn't think that was too funny.

  8. What a great Start. Two good goals for those acorns would be the SEAL Course. They need to earn Ordinary by June 1st of next year in order to qualify, but it has to be the premier youth training course BSA has.

We have two Trustee Mates. Fine Mates. Finer men have never slept upon a spinnaker. Although, I took both of mine out for a test ride in our new beautiful boat and almost visited Davy Jones' Locker. Remember men, hoses that will sink you need TWO clamps. A beautiful summer day.....wasted. Winds were fabulous. Nice 10-12 knot breeze. The Mac was handling beautifully as we tacked back and forth across the lack. Why does my weiner dog keep yelping? What a fabulous day. What a great boat. What a great lake. 26,000 acres of lake just made for this boat. The teens were aboard the powerboat, water skiing and tubing, leaving us to a relaxing cruise. "Man, I wish that dog would shut up." I look in the cabin and pup is up to her neck in water.....lake water. The Mac is handling a little sluggish. Guys, we have a problem! Big Problem. Hit the pump switch. Nothing. Marvelous. Find where that water is coming in fellas. Plug the other pump in. Not. Water was pouring through the outlet opening. Oh boy. Adrenaline hits max. But my trustee Evinrude will get us out of this. Pull, pull, pull, pull, pull, pull. No, this can't be happening. Pull, pull, Whack! I hit my finger on a cleat while pulling on the motor. Words from my Army Sergeant past start to rise. But as they are about to erupt, there sits my trustee mates wife, along for her first sailboat ride, looking at me. I swallow the blue streak. No motor. Those two Mates start bailing for all their worth. Gallons at a time. One using a cooler the other a bucket. I find our beach, and that's where the wind wants to take us. Sails as tight as I can get them. We're moving pretty good. I think we're going to make it. I'm not going to have to swim a mile with the dog. My trustee mates are pouring gallons and sweating gallons. There's the beach. We're going to make it boys. Crank the Keel up, we're going in. Ah, the beach. Boooyah.

    What a ride.

Two clamps on those drain hoses. two.(This message has been edited by Trail Pounder)

  9. Phillip,

Here you are, kinda typical, spoiled rotten, lazy, punk, spewing out all this anti-establishment crap. "Screw the Challenge" That's classic.

You can send your paper, badge, and medal to me. I'll take them. Or were you just lying again. You obviously lied when you accepted the charge or challenge, you were obviously lying when you appeared at BOR's. You are definately undeserving and ought to write to officially take your name of the rolls. Quit talking about it, quit your trolling and flaming, and act on it. "Put up or shut up".

Your Scoutmaster must have been a serious doofus for you to slip through the cracks like you did.

You embarrass me and I don't even know you.

  10. Thanks for the info about the devices. My sons and their Wolf Den completed the God and Me program this summer. 5 of the 6 who started finished. We had the parents present the medal, knot, and certificate to the boys in front of a Sunday service. The pastor, who's dad was a long time Scoutmaster, helped the boys earn their Bobcat, so we let him award the Bobcat patch that same time. I thanked him, and thanked the members for letting us borrow him all summer, pinned on the Counselors lapel pin, and almost got him to become an Assistant Den Leader for this year. The cost of the medals, knots, pins, certs, and manuals, was well worth the expense.
