  1. Thanks for your replies. We're not that close to crossing over. We've been in the Webelos den 6 month and have earned about an average of 9 pins a boy. I know that there is 20 pins total and before they cross they'll have to earn most of them and do the requirements for aol. I have also been slowing them by earning belt loops mentioned in the pin requirements. That way we can get more out of our time spent in the den their Webelos year. Most of the boys hadn't earned many if any belt loops and they are enjoying getting these. Thanks to both SemperParatus (you must be a Marine! My dad served as a Marine.) and EagleInKy. The boy that I was talking about was my own. I had to put him back into 1st grade. I was allowed to let him progress in rank as the CM said that he saw no reason to hold him back as long as he could do the same work as the other boys.

  2. have a den of Webelos that have earned about 1/2 of the Webelos requirements. They might be eligable (sp?) to move up to Boy Scouts sooner than 2 yrs that the Webelos program allows. My question is, I have 1 boy who is 9 yr. He will be ten this summer. He has a late b'day in the summer. He's younger than the rest of the boys but is right there with them and doing as well or better than some on the requirements. I know that I have heard requirements to move up is 11 yr and/or passed the 5th grade which this boy will do neither. I was just wondering what would happen with this child if he completes the requirements just like the rest of the boys. Will he be able to move up or will he have to stay behind and do nothing?

  4. We are having a multicultural night in January of the coming year and our den has France. We're supposed to give a report on Scouting in France. Does anyone have any information that they can share with us that might be really interesting to share with the other boys in our group? Thanks!!!

  5. I am a Webelos I leader. Our boys have been working hard on their pins since June (They moved up in May). I have not awarded any pins this year. We were getting the other requirements done that are required for the pins. Last month I was going to award a few a the Nov pack meeting but it wasn't held because of work we had to do for a parade. They also wanted to hold the awards for the Christmas party. I have 4 boys in my den and they have on average about 16 awards a piece. These aren't all pins. They each have about 4 belt loops (2 that was supposed to awarded last month and 2 this month). Then there is the Webelos patch and colors. Some have earned the compass point emblem. My question is, should I wait and award some of these awards for the January pack meeting? We have been told not to give the boys tons of awards at one time or they might expect it each time. My boys haven't really gotten any awards this year except for the belt loops they have earned (we are allowed to work on 2 a month). What do you think? Thanks for your suggestions!

  6. I had read the Scouting Magazine the other day and came across an article about a Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award. It's supposed to be a pocket patch and you can earn it each year as a cub scout moves up in rank. It didn't have the requirements for earning it. Does anyone know these or where I could find them?

Also there was a 75th Aniversary patch that was mentioned but not any requirements for it either. Does anyon know about this one?

I was thinking that the Outdoors Award would be a great addition to the boys uniforms if they were interested in earning it. The anniversary patch would be a keep sake.

    Thanks!

  7. I'm not sure what to tell you because we had the opposite problem. Most of the boys coming in were wanting to camp and we did that about 3-4x a year. Since about May we have had some kind of activity planned 1x a month. Our August Buddy Campout was rained out but it was so close to our Sept campout out that we didn't reschedule. We've had really good turn outs. Maybe doing 1 activity a month would have a better turn out? I don't know.

  10. We had ours. It wasn't as good as we had wanted. We ended up with a total of 9 so far. We are also having a buddy meeting (buddy campout got rained out). It's supposed to be like a party with games and songs. Wish us luck!

  11. Made den flags this year. The goal I believe with the boys making the flags is team work. We are supposed to have our flags ready by Monday night's meeting for showing. Along with the flag each den had to come up with an original name, chant and yell. I can tell you with 10 boys it was hard but we have it.

  12. Laurie,I agree that the book is hard to understand. A lot of times it's parents like you and myself who try to figure it out so that our children can achieve the most out of scouting. I think it probably would be a good idea to a least list some of the requirements in the books. Then if they don't understand, I could explain.

fotoscout, your idea is what we are in the process of doing. The other leader that I am working with thought of that. Thanks for the info. We'll see how this works. I really appreciate all the help! I know I'll be back with more questions. :-)

  13. I just sent this note home to them last night. We'll have to see if they bring them next week. That is a good idea to call and talk to the parents one on one and find out if they have gotten the book. Then they can say whether or not they can afford it. Thanks for the idea!

  14. This is my 1st year being a leader and I know that this isn't a 1st time problem. I need some help figuring out how to go about this without making the parents mad or hurting the scouts feelings. We have some boys in our den (some are new and some are old) that have not yet picked up their cub scout book (bear) or the uniform. I have sent out an information sheet for the parents last night and at the bottom put a reminder that the boys are supposed to bring their books to every meeting. We have 11-12 boys in this den. We have 3 leaders counting me. There is no way we can give them their awards without them having a book. Has anyone here had this problem and what did you do? These boys haven't said anything about not being able to afford it.
