Mentally Awake

I just returned from new leaders training and the start up films -- the most exciting three hours of my life! But beyond that, we were talking about the Scout Oath and we were talking about being mentally awake. What does that mean to you? How about your scouts?

Mentally awake -- what does it mean?

This question is very timely to me. I seem to run into people quite often who are and aren't mentally awake.

Questions to determine (in my opinion) whether someoen is mentally awake . . .

I mean above the obvious freedom from drug use, etc. Are they mentally awake.

To me, a mentally awake person is aware of his/her surroundings, the signs of the feelings of other people around them, aware of what's going on in the news . . . in other words, they're paying attention to the world.

When my boss (or anyone else) asks me the same question three days in a row and get the same answer, but doesn't remember ever asking it or doesn't remember the answer, I have to say he's not mentally awake. Considering my boss's position, I have to say I find that a little disconcerting.

Interesting quesiton. I'll look forward to reading the answers of others.

That excludes any carload of Scouts armed with gameboys.

I always thought of mentally awake as being aware of your surroundings and that a scout would never dull his senses by abuse of any controlled substance.

Know what is going on around you. And like OGE posted, unimpaired.

I would add ready and willing to learn new things and/or how to improve what one already knows. Challenging myself to this very thing helps to keep my mind active, and that requires being awake and alert.

I suggest to my Scouts that it includes having the "situational awareness" to have a plan, an alternate, and always know what your next move is supposed to be, and when you're supposed to make it.

Physically awake: Senses are alert

Mentally awake: Ya have common sense

Also, you are around of your surrondings. Im neither physically awake nor mentally awake in the morning!

Mentally:

While some would disagree I like to think that this encompasses Spiritually.Emotionnally and Psychologically.

Awake:

Would have to be taken as not asleep.

I don't for a minute think that this has anything to do with sleeping.

More to do with being alert and aware.

Mentally Awake

Aware of where you are, who you are and where you are heading

Aware of those around you, their needs and requirements

Aware of your surroundings and able to plan for or react to your surroundings as needed

Aware of what all 5 of your senses are telling you in each of their own ways. Remember talking is not a sense, listening is.
