Are you hoping that the parents and Scout don't show up this weekend?

I think you should tell the parents before this weekend. You could have asked How should I approach these parents and how do you think they will react?

Its likely that this child has problems all over the spectrum and his parents could be thinking, "why doesn't he just cut us."

The family knows better than you, I would expect, what they are faced with:

They are faced with the dad not being fit to do the hike, maybe to the point of injury

The kid will have to abandon the hike and wait or worse be flown home early.

The whole assembly will have to abandon the hike.

You owe it to the other youths to start out on the Philmont hike with the highest of level confidence that the trip will be a positive lifetime experience.
