Patrol Box Equipment

I am in charge of finding all of the equipment for the Patrol Boxes for summer camp this year. You guys helped me out so much earlier in the year with winter camping, I thought I would see what you had to offer!

I am looking for any places that you guys like to buy from on the net or otherwise. I am looking for cookware and utensils specifically.

I dont know what you have near you, but the Salvation Army thrift store is a great place for thrifty pots, pans, knives, forks, etc. Ask the troop quartermaster to create a list after talking to the patrols. Then drive him and one of his friends to the store.(This message has been edited by venividi)

BSA supply division is another alternative for purchasing camp cookware and utensils. Items are a bit pricey, but usually very high quality and last a long time. Here's the link, FYI...

We got the silverware donated by our local grocery store of missmatched cutlery from damaged packages. Also on the cookware we have a cummins tool, and harbor frieght outlet stores that were cheaper than wal-mart.

May I presume the youth are cooking for themselves at Scout Camp (Hooray! if so)?

 

If you google on Scouting patrol box contents, you'll get quite a few answers. Here's one which looks fairly complete:

They are doing the cooking for themselves! We are not going to a scout camp for summer camp this year (council or commercial) our Troop is putting on their own camp. They have been wanting to do this, because they were then able to customize the entire experience. The boys have been in deep planning since at least January ( that's when my son came in). They selected the MB's that they will work on, and have produced the rest of the itinerary also. Of course some MB's will be done in a work shop format, but some, like cooking, will be done over the course of the entire week, just by being there.

Thanks for the Harbor Freight Idea, I had completely forgot about them, and we do have a local outlet also, I believe!

Don't forget garage sales for cooking gear. Lots of good pots, pans, skillets and utensils can be picked up real cheap. If you tell the people who are holding the sale that the items are for scouts a lot of the time you can get them even cheaper or even given to you. If you are putting the patrol boxes together for 'car camping' types of overnights don't overlook getting cast iron skillets and dutch ovens at these sales and teaching the scouts how to go about reconditioning them. A lifelong skill to learn.
