  1. On motivation - At the Cub level, I'm not sure that scouts aren't motivated. I think parents aren't motivated! We have one scout that lives 45 minutes away. He's in the pack because he attends the school we meet at, which is where his mother teaches. She has a minimalist approach to attending scouting things.
  2. Thanks - You are making me look forward to Boy Scouts. We are just starting to burn out on prep and carry out a meeting that only 4 scouts may attend. I would love to assist behind the scenes.
  3. What do parents do at the troop level? My husband & I are currently in leadership in our Cub Scout pack. We are looking forward to our son moving up to Boy Scouts. Our Cub Scout pack has been training parents for years to let the leaders do everything. We hope to join a Boy Scout troop that has appropriate involvement of parents. Please share what that would be. Thanks!
  4. I read on another great website that a Webelos DL should ask a parent to head up earning a Webelos badge. They obviously don't attend our pack. However, I have to report that we have had several parents step up and help when asked this year. Do other dens have parents do this? Please share how parents help your Webelos den. This is a reality check for me. Thanks!
  5. Thanks, everyone. lrsap, we had a pack hike last summer where only 2 other scouts attended. Very discouraging. Only 1 parent let us know that they were out of town. So, it is discouraging to even think about organizing something. However, in years past, we always had a pack swim party that was well attended. Did not do that this year due to low funds.
  6. Thanks for sharing! This level of commitment is touching to read about.
  7. Thanks for sharing, Eagle92. I would LOVE for my son to go on a trip like the one you described. Certainly, the stops along the way that you described would be great. You added good insights for me to consider.
  8. My son will be evaluating Boy Scout Troops with my husband to decide which one to join. One thing I've noticed is the wide variety of overnight trips that different troops take. I see the HA based trips, which my son would be excited to do when he's old enough. I've also heard about other trips that you would not be able to take outside of scouting. The St. Louis Council has an outline of a trip to Shiloh Natl. Battlefield where the boys research and take on sharing the experience of a combatant who fought there. One nearby troop has gone on a sight-seeing trip to Atlanta. I
  9. My son is very excited about attending Webelos Resident Camp with my husband who is the Webelos DL. We live an hour from our Council's Camp, and they will have 3 nights of Webelos camp once in July. We also live 1 to 2 hours from 3 other BSA camps. Since this is his last year in Webelos, and he's never attended Webelos camp, I'd like to make sure he has a good experience. What factors should I consider? What questions should I ask? Thanks!
  10. I'm working with my husband with Webelos 1 this year. We typically have 2 den meetings a month. We focus on activity badge requirements at those meetings. However, we don't necessarily try to complete enough requirements to earn the badge at meetings. We have plenty of absences. Also, we'd rather have kids do things like posters at home and bring them in. We've recently been successful in recruiting parents to help with badge requirements at meetings. We're happy about this. However, we don't have an assistant Webelos leader. Do Webelos dens typically meet over the summer
