  1. Doesn't the scout have to be a member while completing MB and/or eagle project?  If he has been inactive for three years....was he on the roster?  Doesn't he need approval by the SM before he starts a MB? Our SM is the only one that hands out the blue cards.

  2. Was just a joke...my real comment was the one prior.

I found that my son actually preferred being in his OWN tent, rather than bunking with another scout.  Some may simply believe that they have to bunk with another...and they would prefer their parent over another boy.  Not sure if this is the issue, but maybe?

Our CO has made it clear they want us to be as close to coed as possible. So, we are planning to run parallel troops with new female leaders and all girls patrols but shared meetings and outings. Our IH has volunteered to run interference with the council if needed but it looks like this model is emerging as an official model.

I have heard of people discussing the same committee for both the boy troop and the girl troop.  This makes the institutional knowledge easier to set up a girl troop, which would be welcome...if there are volunteers.  The troop is going to be much more of a logistical issue than a cub scout pack!

  4. My daughter is in GSA....no plans to quit.  We have a watered-down troop.  Hardly meets.  That is simply what works for these girls now that they are all 6th graders in middle school.  They are, however, doing the minimum requirements, and they are doing them fully.

I have already expressed interest in taking on a committee position next year in our council....I was told that they need to work on the cub scout program first.  I think being involved in both of my kids troops is doable, but only as a committee member.  I prefer an active role there, rather than as ASM/SM.  I presume, however, that in the fall when there are 5th grade girls starting, those 5th grade girls will need to cross over in March 2019.  The girl troop has to be intact before that...so I would hope that my daughter can help launch the troop in 1/2019.

She plans on committing at least until she has her 1st class rank, and then decide if she wants to move to a crew or stay with the troop.  Either way, she will be one of the first generations to earn eagle, so she is tickled about that.

She has always said that she loves the cub scout camping more than any camping experience she ever had with the GSA.  GSA is more like slumber parties with a campfire.  I think she is well-prepared and could zoom through the basics rather fast.  She knows her stuff and is willing to learn.  She can focus much better than her male peers, and loves to get dirty.  So, I am watching this thread intently.

So how do I encourage breaking from this "tradition" without ruffling too many feathers? I think that out of a troop of about 20 boys there are about 3 families who do that.

I would coordinate with the feeder packs....encourage the DL to equip the scouts with their own test for a Christmas gift....or maybe a "crossing over" gift.  If the younger boys coming up into the troop are more comfortable running solo, it surely sets the proper expectation for all boy scouts!

Also, the DL should encourage the parents of the AOL den to start sleeping in separate tents...even if they are 1' away.

You misunderstand what 'well regulated' means in the Second Amendment.  The first 'well regulated militia' clause explains the reason of the second 'right to keep and bear arms' clause. Regulated meant 'proficient in the use of arms' as written at the time.  The 'militia' are all able-bodied persons.  In no way does it or has it ever meant to be a right regulated by any congress. None of the Bill or Rights limit or seek to regulate citizens' rights, only recognizes and limits governments' ability to limit citizens' rights. The Federalist Papers No. 29 and 46 along with Supreme Court case DC vs Heller and McDonald vs Chicago are good places to start in order to better understand this.  It has been repeatedly reaffirmed that armed self-defense is a fundamental right that shall not be infringed upon, no different than any of the other parts of the Bill of Rights.

And yet, there is absolutely no way that we are allowing only those with demonstrated proficiency with basic weaponry to use/bear arms.  That is where you and I will have to disagree.

Some of us history-minded GSUSA oldtimers who are thinking of switching to BSA might like "Girl Guides".  But I see two big problems with "Girls Guides" as a name for BSA4G:

GSUSA would hate it, because they are the WAGGGS member in the USA, and BSA is not.

And the girls themselves who don't know much scouting history, just like their older American sisters 100 years ago, will want to be called "scouts" and not something else.

They are scouts though.....just like Venturers are scouts.  They are not "venturer scouts", but they are Venturers, which are scouts.  Just semantics to me.

BoSco is much better than an alt BoyScAm 😀

They should just keep it as BSA....its a historical name and means something.  Nothing wrong with that.  I know a jew Jewish females that have membership in the YMCA.  I don't see anyone having an issue with that.

I'm going to predict the older girl program will be "Girl Guides" as a homage to the international girls.  If they just throw a label out there, people will calm down.

And I can't imagine that they won't have a troop formed in 1/2019 with a few older/interested girls to accept girls crossing over in the February-April timeframe.  I would hope so. I put my name in the hat to be on the committee in our council, if one forms near our home.  Let's see how that goes.

The constitution does talk about the duties and responsibilities of elected officials.

The Constitution is a blueprint for the federal government. It is not a blueprint for society in general. It does not instruct private citizens in how they should conduct their lives.

And yet the constitution does refer to well-regulated, and regulations are rules.  We abide by them.  Companies abide by them.  But apparently, we don't want to regulate here regardless of what the constitution says.

I tend to agree the word “Boy” will be removed or replaced eventually.

Agree....besides, I've always thought "youth" represent more boys than girls, even though the term is considered genderless.  I suppose I keep hearing in my head John Pesci saying "the two yoots" when referring to two 18-20 year old boys :)

  11. If you look for a specific packs, the results now show whether they are:

         Dens for Boys or Girls

         Boy Pack

Example is Portland area. So, obviously, many COs have already committed (at least initially) to the affiliation that they wish to sponsor.  Now, will there be enough interest for an all-girls pack?  Doubtful.  Girls have less issue with being near boys, while boys sometimes don't want to be near girls.

Camp Meriwether in Oregon has already published their plan for the 2019 camping season.

    See https://www.cpcbsa.org/meriwether

Out of 8 weeks, only two will be set aside as "Boys Only".

It seems to me they have it backwards - perhaps only two weeks should be open to girls.

The tail is wagging the dog.

New here....loved the thread so far.

I think Oregon (and west coast in general) is an anomaly.  You won't see this prevalence of co-ed'ing east of Nevada.  I bet 5:1 boys:girls weeks on the eastern scout camps.
