  1. Currently the Cub Scout NATIONAL PACK SUMMERTIME AWARD PIN is worn centered above the button on the "wearer's right" pocket flap.

Now, when Cubs earn the CUB SCOUT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AWARD Patch it will be sewn over that flap. For each additional time the CUB SCOUT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AWARD is earned, a Wolf Track Pin may be pinned on the patch over the pocket flap.

Question: What happens to the NATIONAL PACK SUMMERTIME AWARD PIN? May it be pinned on the new patch or is it worn no more? Or, has a new location been designated for it?

  2. Sorry everyone. But I will continue to show my flag the respect it deserves by removing my hat at the raising or lowering of Old Glory. And I will expect my boys to show their flag that same respect.

At our summer camp one of the calls at flag twice a day was. "Scout remove hats". Maybe that isn't by some written guidelines but it is one that I feel our flag deserves.

    Lynda J,

Doesn't the scout salute render honor to "your" flag as well? I certainly don't believe I, nor my Scouts, are disrespecting "Old Glory" when we render the Scout hand salute in our Activity, or Field, Uniforms with our heads under OFFICIAL "covers". I believe we are acting OFFICIALLY and in accordance with the best traditions and protocol of the BSA, as well as rendering the highest honor to our National Ensign!

  3. If saluting in uniform with hats on outdoors (which I'm sure it probably was) was in common use by Boy Scouts on June 15, 1916, then it's okay now!

    Cub Scout Prayer

    (Tune: O Tannenbaum)

Lord, in this evening hour I pray,

For strength to do my best each day.

Draw near to me that I may see,

The kind of Cub that I should be.

In serving other, let me see,

That I am only serving Thee.

Bless me, Oh Lord, in Thy great love,

That I may be a better Cub.

  6. SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

    SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

    SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

    SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

Go call an Executive before you try any of the above in Uniform! Gimme a break Bob White, it's St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital for crying out loud! Your moral compass should point to "S" and that stands for: SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN!

  7. Do it, in Uniform! What are they going to do, eat you? Can you think of a better cause? Heaven forbid Scouts in uniform might be associated with helping to raise money for a premier hospital dedicated to SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN!

Has it come to this that we have to ask if we can wear the Uniform on a mission of mercy? It's not like your supporting a political candidate at a rally!

Tour Permit it as a hike, isn't that what it really is?

As to the Service Project I would say yes to that also. As contributing to SAVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN is most assuredly "service" in the purest sense of the word!

Just as a side note: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital is named after St. Jude because he is the patron saint of lost, or hopeless causes! "Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast day is October 28."

God bless you, t136cor, for this true service project!

  9. bluegoose:

I had promised myself I was not coming back to this subject, alas....

You quote Bob Dylan and his song "The Times They Are A-Changin:" to, I suppose, indicating that we should now accept homosexuality as we previously did not. I disagree. You profess your faith a as Quaker, which I understand is Christian, so I will address you as such. Everyone may want to freak out over this, but if you can quote a "Rock Star" to support you, I am going to quote "The Rock" to support me. "Times [may be] A-Changin" for Bob but not for God! God does not change.

    Malachi 3:6

"I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

    1 Samuel 15:29

He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind."

    Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

    Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Seeing that Scripture clearly professes that God does not change, why are we now to believe that homosexuality has become okay?

    Leviticus 18:22

Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

    1 Corinthians 6

8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers. 9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

    Romans 1:27

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

My faith does not allow me to accept homosexuality as a 'good thing", further it does not allow "me" to condemn any sinner, but to witness that through faith and repentance, forgiveness is available through Jesus Christ. Modern society keeps watering down God's precepts so that everyone "feels good" and all behavior is "normal"! Brother, I offer you the passage below, you decide if when Jesus comes back, whether or not He would be happy with the BSA abandoning "morally straight".

    Revelation 19

11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter."[1] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

  11. "are NOT the words of the John Jay/CUNY study, NOT the words of the Roman Catholic Church, NOT the words of the USCCB, or any of its Boards"

-I never said they were. I said, "A good summary of the results of the study can be found at: www.catholicexchange.com/vm/index.asp?art_id=22733". If that was interpreted as an official site without checking it, I apologize, but I still believe it's a good and accurate summary.

"shows a hatred that frightens me."

-How is having an opinion that differs from yours showing hatred that that frightens you? If I disagree with you, should I just keep quite so you won't be frightened? I have said nothing threatening or vile, I have committed no hate-speak. I just vehemently disagree with you.

"THERE IS NO VALIDATION FOR YOUR POST", OR YOUR BELIEFS, IN THE JOHN JAY/CUNY STUDY."

    -Yes, there is.

"You can spin this any way you want, but homosexuals should continue to be banned from the BSA based on their moral depravity. . . .The liberal elite/homosexual deviants want us (BSA, USA, whole World) to conform to them. . . ."

. . .Apparently, spinning can be done in either direction, Bugler.

BTW, who are the liberal elite and are they all homosexual??"

-Hollywood, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Time-Warner, etc., etc., and I don't know about all of them, just "Will and Grace", oh, and "Three's Company"!

"I guess, by "us" you mean people who think like you do - what makes you think you think you speak for the USA, and the whole world??"

-By us, I mean the "Blue America" of the Bush-Gore election and those who don't want the BSA opened to homosexuals.

"I would even question that you speak for the majority BSA membership"

-I'm sure I do, or they wouldn't be in the BSA. If you don't agree with the BSA you can join another group, or start your own.

"though you obviously speak, at least in part, similarly, to the policy makers of the BSA."

    -Thank God!

If any SM or other Scout Leader gets it into his head that his role somehow resembles the role of a priest, I'll be making phone calls to Council.

-I wasn't referring to being like a religious minister. I meant that the youth would presuppose that because each adult was in a traditional role of authority, they would therefore be trustworthy and morally upright.

BPwannabe@137 was "just throwing out this topic for some intelligent and interesting conversation." he certainly got that.

We are never going to agree on this.

  12. "Actually, I was defending science from your misuse (possibly perversion) of it. Science doesn't 'belong' to anyone (as in "my science"). It is free for anyone to employ. I hope you give it a try someday."

You rush to defend science from "perversion", but not anything else! How odd you chose the noun "perversion". I'm glad I didn't employ that word first! Mr. Webster says:

    Main Entry: perversion

    Pronunciation: p&r-'v&r-zh&n, -sh&n

    Function: noun

    Date: 14th century

1 : the action of perverting : the condition of being perverted

2 : a perverted form; especially : an aberrant sexual practice especially when habitual and preferred to normal coitus

I said my "science", not "my science". Semantics, is that it?Since science is "free for anyone to employ", I will "employ" it, but I will not "terminate" my commonsense in the process.

Since you seem to have me figured out, you probably already know the truth about me, and other right leaning, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals. We really don't need science, as we have The Bible!

  13. "If anyone wants to promote their particular prejudice, I would appreciate it if they would articulate their arguments in their own honest terms, and not try to use science (or their ignorance thereof) as a crutch."

I am not "promoting a particular prejudice", I was responding to BPwannabe@137's oringinal post. Therefore my remarks were solicited. "Promoting" to my ignorant mind would be unsolicted.

If someone wants to deviate sexually they can do so. However, I do not want them in a position to instruct, or be a role model for, my son in a private organization. They can start their own organization. Some seem ready to attack my "science" so I will confine my Natural Law remarks to mammals, but I will not retract that I believe, that avowed homosexuality in homo sapiens is disordered and deviant. You can call that ignorance, I call it enlightenment. I have been enlighten by the happenings in the Catholic Church!

Why don't ya'll take a drag at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Research Study? Start trying to refute that instead of defending microbes. "Overall, 81% of abuse victims were male, and 78% were at or past the age of puberty. In general, the highest rate of abuse occurred among males aged 11 to 14. In other words, most of the abuse involved gay priests molesting teenage boys. This is called homosexuality, not pedophilia."

Do you think it's not relevant because it deals with the Catholic Church. The position of a Scout Leader in relation to a youth, is not that dissimilar from a Priest.

Would you let your son go on a camping trip with a male who could be aroused by him? Or, would you want the gay Scoutmaster explaining his "lifestyle" to you son in detail? A lifestyle that is diametrically opposed to the core beliefs you, and the organizations your family joins, hold dear?

Is there anyone we can exclude?

  14. Merlyn_LeRoy:

Cute, a little lesbian "snake with legs." "the New Mexico Whiptail, as well as several other all-female species of whiptail lizard, does reproduce, and all of its offspring are female."* I'm not sure I need to stand corrected on this one. The Whiptail "reproduces by parthenogenesis -- its eggs require no fertilization, and its offspring are exact and complete genetic duplicates of the mother."*. So, Natural Law may allow them to deviate, or maybe not as "Scientists understand only partially how this reproductive mode developed."* They may be equipped with male and female physiological properties. Try parthenogenesis on primate! I still may be right just give these little deviants time, "Since there is no genetic variation except that which occurs through mutation, the New Mexico Whiptail cannot evolve as other species do."* They are probably on the way out evolutionarily speaking, as their recreation method does not seem to be a big hit in the Natural Order!

This obscure example does not justify homosexuality to me.

  15. A very small and deviant segment of society demands that we accept them "because" they are deviant. You can spin this any way you want, but homosexuals should continue to be banned from the BSA based on their moral depravity, i.e., "to keep myself......morally straight". So everyone wants to say oh, they are not deviant, they are different. Yea, right! As Scouts we are not required to accept any specific faith. "A Scout is reverent toward God" Remove the faiths and take just the basics. God is a Supreme Being who is responsible for The Natural Order of the Universe, or Natural Law. All things must conform to that Law or become extinct. How many homosexual animals exist as a species, none. They would be unable to reproduce, so the trait of same sex mating deviates from Natural Law, i.e., those who do so are deviants.

I am Catholic, the problems in The Church have been caused by nonconformity to Divine Teaching. We dumbed down our "understanding" of homosexuality and became more inclusive. This wasn't a matter of "Doctrine", we just kind of got liberal "unofficially", i.e., those with power did what they wanted, and let in who they wanted, and covered up what they wanted. If you doubt for one-second that admitting homosexuals into the BSA is a bad ideal I invite to learn from the Catholic Church's experience with this matter.

The Nature and Scope of the Problem of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States

A Research Study Conducted by the

John Jay College of Criminal Justice

    www.usccb.org/nrb/johnjaystudy/

A good summary of the results of the study can be found at:

    www.catholicexchange.com/vm/index.asp?art_id=22733

    Here are some pertinent excerpts:

[The report also broke down the facts regarding the victims and this is revealing. Overall, 81% of abuse victims were male, and 78% were at or past the age of puberty. In general, the highest rate of abuse occurred among males aged 11 to 14.

In other words, most of the abuse involved gay priests molesting teenage boys. This is called homosexuality, not pedophilia.

Regarding the first question, the Board concluded that two main factors contributed to the existence of these abusers in the Church: one, dioceses and orders didn't screen priestly candidates properly (and so sexually and emotionally immature men were admitted to the priesthood).

The other main factor was poor seminary formation, where seminarians were not properly prepared for the rigors of celibacy in a hypersexualized world and in the all-male environment of the seminary. Bennett pointed out that many seminaries lost their way in the 1970s, and that this surely contributed to the problem.

This data now proves what we've long suspected: the sex abuse scandal has more to do with homosexuality than with pedophilia. The report points out that, "given the nature of the problem of clergy sexual abuse of minors, the reality of the culture today, and the male-oriented atmosphere of the seminary, a more searching enquiry is necessary for a homosexually oriented man by those who decide whether he is suitable for the seminary and for ministry. For those bishops who choose to ordain homosexuals, there appears to be a need for additional scrutiny...."]

The liberal elite/homosexual deviants want us (BSA, USA, whole World) to conform to them. If someone wants to be homosexual that is their business, but I should not be forced to associate with them, or have my son exposed to them, or have them in a position to expose themselves to my son! They can do their thing somewhere else. Exactly where will we draw the line? Bestiality maybe? Necrophelia? I think the "Divine Line" was clearly drawn at Sodom and Gomorra, and the Boy Scouts should not issue tour permits to that place!

My point really is: if one in morally depraved enough to commit avowed homosexual acts, what in his "moral code" would keep him from having sex with a minor of the same sex. Nothing, because the avowed homosexual has abandoned the "moral code" of Natural Law. If you let them in, or turn a blind eye, don't be surprized when they rape (pc term-molest) your children!

  16. This may be sacrilegious but I use a professional tailor! I don't have rank badges anymore but temporary insignia on the right pocket. It's the same principle.

My tailor will do this: "take the pocket off the shirt, carefully, sew the patch on with the machine, and then sew the patch back on the shirt." All for five (5) bucks! She will sew on any other patch, strip, etc. for one (1) dollar each! The work is perfect. She loves Scouts; also she buys a lot of popcorn! What a deal!

mich632, maybe you could find a professional tailor in your area?

  17. I am a Wolf Den Leader, here is my personal observation: In my District About 50% of Cub Scout Leaders wear complete uniforms, 40% wear just uniform shirts, and 10% wear no uniform. Less than 5% of all those wear hats or neckerchiefs. The most common hat worn for Wolf Den Leaders is the BSA green and red cap, or the Expedition Hat. I have never seen an adult in a Wolf Cap. Whatever percentage I constitute, is the percentage that religiously wears a hat as part of the Uniform. That is not boasting that is a fact. I was "raised" as a Scout to believe headgear was an essential part of the Uniform. Without it we were out of uniform.

That being said I wear everything the rules allow, except I wear a CAMPAIGN HAT. The uniform police here have other, bigger, fish to fry than one old fashioned traditional Scouter. I wear it as a symbol of the standards BSA has established. It gives me something to live up to, I feel different when I wear it. Special, if you will, does than sound kind of dumb? Okay try this, it looks SUPER COOL!

I recommend the CAMPAIGN HAT! Go for it, BP did!

  18. Mark:

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger! That's why I said "What is the origin of this command, i.e., is it short for some longer forgotten phrase?" I thought the phrase might be something like "return your hand 'to' your side", or something like that.

I am very glad I posted the questions now, but I don't want to "toot" my own horn!

Now the hard question is: What is the best way to present the facts to your SM and not "tootally" embarrass him! Good luck with that one.

    +Jim

  19. Bob White: Thanks, I get it now! It's for each branch. I thought you meant "kinds" like in the "mechanics of the salute", say for Boy Scouts. You had me worried there was something else I wasn't aware of, other than the "two" thing! Of course there may be something else I'm unaware of, but I'm unaware of it (at this time)!

    SEA SCOUT DRILL MANUAL

    Purposes of Drill

Drill has many purposes, contrary to popular belief. Drill accustoms individuals to working as a member of a team -- a team moving confidently together in unison and to a measured cadence. Drill is also used to move a unit from one place to another in a standard, orderly manner. Drill also teaches discipline by instilling habits of precision and automatic response to orders. Drill improves morale by developing team spirit. It also gives younger petty officers the confidence of command and experience in giving proper commands.
