Yes, he already has the swimming MB. That isn't required to do those MBs, is it? His friend doesn't have the swimming MB and are planning on doing canoe/rowing together.

I thought it was ok. He liked going to the sustainable building supply store and seeing the different products. Definitely not buying one of those composting toilets. The rubbery toilet "bowl" looks like you would have to bleach/scrub it with every use. Gross. Also, because we are already pretty green due to having these exercises through the school and cub scouts, it was tough to reduce carbon footprint even more. We did for those few weeks but it was super tough and not something I would sustain.

Oh! Got it. The people in our troop keep telling him to focus on rank and the Eagle track but he would rather do some fun badges too. Not sure he knew that sustainability fit the Eagle reqs. Thanks for the recommendations on Nature and Fish/Wildlife. I will suggest those to him.

My son is headed off for his first camp out. He filled out the form for his schedule, but now he's second guessing what he selected. What is the difference between canoe and rowboat? He chose kayaking and rowing as his MBs this summer. He wants to do some other nonMB things with the rest of his time- snorkeling and fishing mostly. Thank you.

Ok, so my son asked my husband and I to keep track on a chart the things that we purchase. I've been doing that but now he has to say whether the items are essential or desirable. Kind of some gray area there. Would items purchased for possibility of emergency (like bug out bag stuff) be essential or desirable? Would items purchased to maintain house be essential or desirable like air/water filters or new knob to replace broken ones? What about new fence to keep in dog? What about new socks for son? Hi, My son likes to fish and has grown up doing so. He is working on the fishing merit badge, which included learning knots. So, he can do them on the handle of scissors (he practiced them this way, not sure why). How does he go about actually using these knots while actually fishing? Thank you.

Honestly, most of the mammals we came across while searching were not ones I necessarily want more of (mice, rats, etc.). They were all over the camp we were at. Liked the deer though.

Well, he is participating in lots of things, just not campouts. Almost every weekend, he is helping out at an Eagle's project or doing some kind of service for the charter organization. He says he loves Boy Scouts so I guess that's what we'll go on for now. I got a little worried because one of his buddies is dropping out because he thinks Boy Scouts is boring. My son is kind of easy to please. If you feed him at the end of the hard work, he's good. How would we get adult leadership to go on a patrol campout? I would like to do that if I could figure it out. There are only 3 boys. I guess I don't really understand how to make it be an official troop event (where they could get credit).

I think maybe all of this is because our troop is pretty small and top heavy (I mean lots of older boys and then a few new kids but not really any in the middle). I didn't know the troop did mostly high adventure stuff when we signed up. I guess he (and I) will just have to be patient.

My son has been in Boy Scouts now for about 7 months. He hasn't progressed much in rank requirements or been able to go on many outings (told not appropriate for his age/rank). There is one campout coming up where the hike in to camp is only 5 miles and apparently a moderate one, so he will get to go to that one but then it's back to the wilderness survival type of camping. The problem is I don't see how he will get rank because 1. it will take a long time for there to be enough appropriate campouts and 2. they don't cook as a patrol, but each person just brings their own cliff bars or whateve

Hi, You all were very helpful with the last question about birds. He is working on the soils and rocks portion now. He collected and ID'd the five dif rocks, but is confused about collecting/IDing soils found in dif layers of a soil profile. He can easily do the top two layers, but how is he to get the deeper layers? Thank you.

Thanks for all the input. Yes, the Nature MB requirement already required IDing 8 species of birds, so he has done that part. Mild climate, near water, so that requirement was easily met. Prior to joining scouts and an animal lover, he already has placed in his yard a hummingbird feeder, seed feeder, and a bird bath. He chose the house because it's something he hadn't done before. Perhaps, it's still too early, but not according to the birding club in our area. I will probably suggest he set up another bird feeder.

The month is almost over and no birds have moved into the bird house. Does he start over and make something else? Birdhouse looks ok and seems to be in a good location. He already made a bird bath for a the Bird Study MB and so could he make another one of those? Or does he have to do the birdbath? Here's what the req says... Make and set out a birdhouse or a feeding station or a birdbath. List what birds used it during a period one one month. Thanks for input.
