  1. FOLLOW UP:

The scoutmaster spoke to the scouts mother and here is what happened.

    1. The scout wrote the note and just had his mother sign it.

    2. There is no "beliefs" issue.

    3. The scout does not want to wear his uniform because we have our Troop meeting in the school that he attends and he doesn't want anyone/friends to see him in his uniform because he is embarrased. NOTE: Our troop meetings run from 7:00-9:00PM and there are many other activities going on in the school at that time. Our meetings are held in the cafeteria which anyone must pass by to enter/exit the building.

    4. Mother called council as asked about uniform requirements. Council stated that each troop sets its own requirements.

    5. Mother said that he he was made to wear his uniform that "we would lose him as a scout".

    6. Scoutmaster suggested that the scout send a letter to the SPL indicating his desires regarding uniform. The SPL would then discuss it with the SP to determine the request.

    7. Scoutmaster also suggested that the scout possibly take a look at the other troop in our town(there is only 2) if his requested is turned down by the SPL/SP.

    8. All adult leaders agree "we are a uniformed unit".

Keep you posted on the result.

  2. A scout gave our scoutmastser a note from his mother stating that the scout would no longer be wearing his uniform because it "contradicts their beliefs".

The note did not go into detail on what those beliefs are.

The scoutmaster was going to contact the mother to find out more information.

What is the BSA policy(official/unofficial) for something like this? Anyone else had to deal with a similiar problem?

  3. Under Youth Member Behavior Guidlines - Unti Responsibilities it states:

Each Cub Scout den and Webelos Scout den and each chartered Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity Scout team, and Venturing crew shall have one leader, 21 years of age or older, who shall be registered and serve as the unit or den leader. A unit leader may not serve simultaneously in any other position within the same unit. The head of the chartered organization or chartered organization representative and the local council must approve the registration of the unit or den leader on the appropriate form.

  4. I had 2 sons graduate from our Cub Scout pack. They both moved onto the Boy Scout troop.

I now have a Tiger Cub back in the pack. Since I now have boys in both programs and have to be at both Pack & Troop events, meetings , I decided to take on the following leadership responsibilities:

    Trained Tiger Den Leader(Pack)

    Pack-Troop Liason(Pack/Troop)

    Den Chief Coordinator(Pack/Troop)

    Trained Assistant Scoutmaster(Troop)

I have now been approached about taking on the role of Unit Commissioner for both the Pack & Troop(both are chartered by the same organization). I am reluctant because my primary focus is the Tiger Den Leader, then the Troop responsibilities.

I would appreciate any thoughts, comments, real life experiences on taking on another leadership role
