When I was a boy, the only camp that we ever went to for summer camp was Camp Orr. Just outside Jasper, Arkansas on the beautiful Buffalo National River. I can almost say that I grew up there. My dad was in one of the canoes coming down the river when they chose the spot to build the camp and then he helped to build it too. I started going there as soon as I got into Boy Scouts. Between summer camp, council and O.A. activities I also spent several summers on staff there as well.I spent MANY years there in the past. It has been just over 20 years since I have been there. I have recently come back into Scouting as a Scoutmaster and I just renewed my O.A. dues and will be attending our Ordeal in August. I earned my Vigil Honor in 1987 and am hoping to bump into some of the guys that I used to be in Scouts with.

I have a hand-held police scanner that picks up the NOAA weather channels. I also have a set of those 12-mile range walkie-talkies that has them built in as well. So far, I have not been anywhere that I can't pick up a signal (I have had some weak signals though). I am sure that the radios that I have do have their limits. I was a Cub Scout and a Webelo's for a short time. I was in Boy Scouts for a long time making my Eagle and earning the Vigil Honor. I held just about every youth position and helped to start a new Scout troop in Texas in the early 90's. After that I got busy with life. Job, wife, kids and other stuff. Now, my son is 11 years old and it has given me a reason to make the time for Scouts again. The Scouts was a real good thing in my life when I was young. It probably helped to keep me out of trouble. I have always loved the outdoors and Scouting was a big part of that. When I was younger I dreamed of being a professional Scouter and to try and carry on what (and how) I was taught. I very recently have taken over the position of Scoutmaster for my son's troop and am SO looking forward to try and pass on the ideals and feelings that I acquired when I was a boy. My son's troop isn't very active in district and council events and I hope to change that. The troop is also currently not very "boy run" right now and I also hope to teach and guide the boys into more leadership roles. Why do I do this? I have such fond memories and feelings about the Scouts that it is hard to put them into words. I can bet that a lot of you know exactly what I'm talking about.

lol... I'm 37 and was in scouts for years. I recently got back into it. I saw a "decent" one on Ebay last week for @ $100. I never hurts to ask. I was thinking about using reprints and will probably get them, as they will probably be all that I can find. I'll keep looking, maybe I'll get lucky.

Hi y'all, I'm looking for copies (original not reprint) of the 1910 and 1911 BSA Handbook. I don't really have anything to trade and I am poor but will consider a reasonable amount. I have a small collection of handbooks starting with the ones that my dad had when he was a boy and I would like to give him a full set for his birthday. He was so supportive of the program when I was a kid and still helps out to this day.

At our summer camp that we just got back from, I taught wilderness survival. As part of the requirements for the merit badge, each scout had to put together a "survival kit." It has the 10 outdoor essentials in it along with other items that the scout thought would be useful in a survival situation. They had to explain what each item was and why it might be useful. Be Prepared is the Scout Motto. This kit is something that every scout should have on any outing with the extra items in the kit being taylored to the event. I see nothing wrong with asking the scout to bring their bag to a meeting or outing and the way I read it, it was not "required" but would be useful if they did have it.

Howdy from Russellville, Arkansas.I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Scott and I'm an old Boy Scout from way back.I have been away from scouting for a long time and have recently gotten back into it with my sons troop. He gives me a reason to make time for it again. We just got back from summer camp where I taught the Wilderness Survival merit badge and was asked to be an Assistant Scoutmaster because of my outdoors and scouting background. Unfortunately, our summer camp was just our troop because we couldn't afford to attend our local scout camp. The older boys did some high adventure canoing and spelunking while the younger boys stayed in camp and earned merit badges. It was layed back but very enjoyable. The older guys had a lot of fun and the younger guys learned a lot. Actually, we taught more merit badges in a week than our local scout camp teach in the same amount of time. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and to let everyone know how happy I am to have found this amazing resource.
