  1. My crew started out wearing a scrub top because we originally started out kind of like a explorer post for youth interested in the medical field. now we wear borth scrubs and green venturing shirts. I tell my kids to go to wal mart and buy the dickies shorts for $17. they fit well, nice cargo pockets and hold up to active wear.

  2. the new shirt is online at scout stuff. Its listed under "New Items" and under shirts. It sucks! Looks more like the activity shirt then a uniform. BSA is crazy, they are going to price kids out of scouting. The prices are always going up. I spend more on my scout shirts then i do on my army uniforms. My kid saw the shirt at the scout shop and one of my other crew members saw it. They didnt like it.

  3. I was told by Scout Stuff the venturing uniform was changing but have not been able to find any pics. My scout Shop has tried to order them but they cant seem to get them in just yet.

  4. Yeah I dont get the OA flaps eiter. I am going to a sea scout training weekend with my crew on the weekend of 4 april. should be interesting to see whats is worn. Up here around NC/Va area they have the order of the golden dragons. Kind of similar to the Corps of Discovery. i will never understand why BSA supply only sells certain sea scout items. they charge an arm and a leg for venturing insignia.... I hope to get into sea scouting more when (or if) I PCS to new york.

  5. Here in Occoneechee Council I ahve seen the sea scouts (adults) wearing the black "class As" and the black duty uniform as well as "Salt & Pepper" uniforms. In venturing crews can choose their own uniform or go with the BSA green uniform. My crew is a medicaly focused crew for youth who want to go into the medical feild so the youth wear a scrub top with left sleeve patchs and we adults wear the green ventring uniform although we should be wearing what the youth wear. I persnally like the "officer / enlisted" definition myslef.

Any of you all sea scout leaders?

  6. Sounds cool eagle. I a woven world crest from England i picked up at the 91 WSJ. I was also in Canada in 90. Your crest sounds nice. I also saw a nice one with a marrowed edge on the scouts of mexico scout shop web page the other day.

  7. Off the top of my head I think the limit of knots on the sea socut uniform only applies to there tan uniform...I think.... but yeah there is a limit. sounds kind of dumb.

I went to the 89 and 91 World Jamboree and was very upset because after i can back, I think from the 91 WSJ they had changed the uniform guide to allow everyone to wear it. Not a big deal i guess since I dont run into to many 91 wsj alumni but it still kind of rubs me the wrong way. guess i am old.

  8. Yeah i just sent in an order for some knots and collar insignia. going to make a Ship Commissioner collar mark. I am getting into sea scouting and going to take some youth to VA (venturers) to work on the SS bronze award.

  9. The knots listed in the Scouting magazine are current issued knots. Some more then others but all 40 or so are in use by BSA. US Scouts.com and Boy Scout Trail.com have a pretty good list of knots and some of the knots no longer issued. George Crowl also has a great site on knots. He has mentioned on of my private issued knots for the Gettysburg trail. (just something I decided to create when I was deployed)

  10. I dont mind the use of ribbons. As I was tring to state my issue is with the insignia guide being against the wear of ribbons but the venturing hand books stating the use of campaign style ribbons. Knots or ribbons. I like them both. I am a army officer and long time scouter. both are fine with me. my overall point was how BSA trys to disassociate itsself with the military. BP was after all a army officer.

  11. Maybe I am not making myself clear enough. I fully understand what is written in the insignia guide. In my opinion there seems to be a negative overtone when there is talk of a military association with Scouting. As I stated I dont see a need to wear my military awards (except my MOVSM because scouting recognizes it with a knot).

I have a problem with what the insignia guide states in reference to military style ribbons (although some of the full size medals that BSA uses are very similar in size to military medals) and what the venturing hand book states on page 27 "colorful campaign style ribbons". To me that just seems somewhat contradictory.

My comment about sea scouting had nothing to do with awards

  12. LOL

Thanks Skipper. I have never been a big fan of neckerchiefs but i do like my troop 1 neckerchief! I love the stories behind them. Just like the ones associated with military unit patches and coins.

    Good stuff.

  13. I was told by a swiss scout at the international conference that the pink polos are for staff. The story goes, back in the day people would steal staffers shirts. So the staff decided to make a pink shirt to more or less keep the honest poeple honest. Staffers are only allowed to keep one shirt at the end of there tour and have to promas not to sell or give it away. One shirt was donated to the international conference (June 08 PTC) fund raiser and I think the national commissioner ended up paying $800 for it. Kind of an interesting story.

  14. Pink neckerchiefs would make a bold statement but at what point (as Gold Winger stated) do we go over board with non scouting stuff on the uniform? Not that I have seen that much but I do see alot of "Hangie downie things" and things worn around the neck that just junk up the uniform in my opinion could be better served in a display case. I got a few private issue awards I could wear but I don't because they are unfortunally frowned upon by national.

  15. LOL

thats kind of funny....there are a couple or female scouter who work at council who have a pink square knot for brest cancer awareness. Dont get me wrong, i am all for saving the "ta tas" but it just looks weird. They could accomplish the same thing by wearing a pin on there collar.

  16. Eagle

Roger, I know...the Bronze awards are the same size as standard military ribbons. My complaint is that BSA is 2 faced on the subject of wearing ribbons (specifically my award of the MOVSM). The insignia guide is somewhat contradictory to what is printed in the venturing hand book.

  17. I hate the contradictive stance on wearing "ribbon bars". If you read in the insignia guide it more or less states you are not allowed to wear military ribbons but if you red the venturing hand book it states venturing uses "campaign style ribbons" I would never wear my Army ribbons on my scout shirt but it seems that scouting is somehow against those who serve. I do however wear my Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (miniature)

On my nice scout shirt because I have a Community Organization Knot (by virtue of earning a MOVSM).

This might be another thread but I heard last week Sea Scouting was breaking out from Venturing?

  18. I earned my eagle before going to the 91 world jamboree. I worn the rank patch. No problems with it. The COH is a fomality. I would suggest he wear the eagle patch but take it off for his COH. I would not wear the medal until presented.

  19. Scout nut

I was pretty big as a kid myself. back then (late 80s) the merit badge sash was made for a 90 lb kid, not me (around 200 at the time) so i made my own sash. I would suggent taking 2 DC award cords and joining the ends together to make a larger one. I was prowd when i wore mine a long time ago.

  20. jmwalston

technically women can wear a temp patch above the name tag (in the jamboree patch position)

My girlfriend had some problems with how our University of Scouting patch looked on her shirt (very large round patch). I want to say its written in the first few pages of the insignia guide. I think its a worthless book and could be organized better. A little to much duplication of information in my opinion. Its online on the BSA site. I wouldn't buy another one.
