Alternate to merit badge requirement

Recommended Posts

I have a visually impaired Scout who has signed up for Mammal Study and one of the requirements is to identify mammal species by sight or sign.

The only way he will be able to determine a species is one happens to run into him. He must be within 1/2 inch to see anything.

Any ideas for him for this and other merit badges where sight is needed?

A couple of ideas:

1. Identify by sound.

2. Perhaps he could identify tracks by feeling casts of them, or could feel skins (if these are available at a nature center).

3. Allow him to identify the mammal by listening to a description provided by another observer.

The title of the thread is misleading, because you are not really seeking a alternative but how to fulfill the requirement using the signs portion. As pointed out you can use other senses, hear a birds song, touch a deer track, smell a skunk, feel a porcupine quill (preferable one no longer on the porcupine), Hear a squirrel overhead.

So it is possible to complete the requirement as stated.
