Question about Court of Honor

Does the BSA require a minimum number of Court of Honors per year for a BSA Troop? If so what is the number and where are the requirements listed?

Look in the Troop Committee Guidebook, Advancement chapter (7?) in the COH section. It says they should be conducted at least four times per year.

Also, I think for a quality unit - a minimum of four are required. However, just like the number of outings, no strict number is "required." That is, if you have three COHs in a year, don't worry about getting your charter revoked.

Thanks for your message. I've double checked the 2005 Quality Unit Award form and it doesn't reference anything about COH's. See 2004 QUA form at link:

Otherwise "KoreaScouter" is right - the Troop Committee Guidebook "suggests" 4 COH's per year. But any other firm requirements would be good to know about as our Troop offers 3 COH annually.

We do 3 a year. We'd like to get to 4, but it hasn't been a necessity. I believe 3 or 4 (every 3-4 months), is well within reason.

We have about 70 scouts in the troop and Courts of Honor can tend to get long, especially in the fall after summercamp where will may have over 120 meritbadges to award. Tradiiton had the troop doing 3 Courts a year, Fall, Winter and Spring. One year the PLC suggested a fourth Court be done to cut done on the time required to do them. The Advancement Chair issued a stern thumbs down on the situation, he had a hard enough time organizing merit badges and ranks, et al for 3 Courts, he didnt want to do 4...

Ours were October, so they could get all the partials from camp done, Feburary for Scout week and FOS and late May/early June to get all badged up for summer camp.
