Gettysburg Railway
September 27th, 2003 717.334.6932 scenic@gettysburgrail.com First Annual Rail-Hike! Train Departs Gettysburg at 8AM for Hunters Run, an old Reading Railroad station point, now located on the famous Appalachian Trail (AT Trail)! In fact, part of the AT Trail is actually the former railroad roadbed. Coordinated with the National Park Service, this event will feature a scenic train ride to Hunters Run where hikers will depart the train for an 11-mile hike to the Pine Furnace State Park and return. Pine Grove Furnace State Park marks the halfway point along the 2,000-mile AT Trail. While at Pine Furnace, relax or explore the remains of the furnace or the historic buildings dating from the 1800s, including the ironmasters mansion, clerks office, stable, grist mill or the inn. Or take one of five short walking paths to see white pines, Mountain Creek, visit a forested swamp filled with interesting plants and animals or view the entire part from the Pole Steeple Overlook. Another overlook can be found up Piney Mountain. Pack your own lunch, eat at the park or enjoy a stop at Green Mountain Grocery, a favorite stopping point for AT hikers for many years. The railroad can arrange for Green Mountain Grocery to deliver their famous deli sandwiches to the train prior to your arrival at Hunters Run. Dont miss this very memorable first annual event! Train will depart Hunters Run at 5:00PM, arriving Gettysburg at 6:30PM. Local camping and lodging can be arranged through Gettysburg Scenic Railways Group Tour Manager.(This message has been edited by Gettysburg Railway)
