Scouters in Action-Fire Buckets vs. Extinguishers

Recommended Posts

Doesn't the steam serve to displace the oxygen as well or is the cooling the only action? If I remember my damage control classes, steam could be used to smother a fire.

Of course that was 30 years ago so my memory could be faulty or fire may have changed.

I am gonna guess that your reference to damage control comes from the Navy.

In a way you are right. Steam can be used to smother a fire. But in enclosed spaces where you can trap the and prevent the escape of the steam, it is an effective method. But we are using open areas, tents and grass fires. Steam is not effective in these fires.

One other thing that you might wnat to consider if you are trying to combat a ground cover fire, (ONLY IF CAN BE DONE SAFELY), is to use standard steel tools, rakes, shovels, and maddox axes to remove the fuel (Leaves, sticks, and pine straw)

I hope this answers your qustions. Always remember, BE SAFE, there is no shame in saying you cannot do something dangerous
