  1. Try http://www.ships-store.org/ to source many uniform parts. I was able to get set-up with all the leader insignia from my local Scout Shop. We are going to go with Khaki Leader uniforms, so we will be using "dickies" brand shirts and pants. I still am confused, though, by reading page 111 in the Sea Scout Manual: It says the "Adult Work Uniform" shal consist of... and then it says "The officer signifies his or her office by wearing a silver metal insignia on each collar. The exact position of the badge of office is noted below." I could only find the "universal ancho
  2. pbiner: I wonder if you might expand upon your thought of using a 360 review as a ticket item. Although it may give you good feedback as to how you are doing, but shouldn't the ticket be set up to ultimately provide service to the unit(s) you serve? In other words... sure - the 360 is a good tool, but like a hammer is a tool to build a house, a 360 is just one of the tools we have all acquired through participating in WB21. What is the goal here? Might it possibly be to utilize some of the feedback provided to improve a certain process or function you provide to your unit?
  3. ntrog8r: Much appreciated! I will reimburse you for two patches in whatever form of Currency you desire: check, money order, PayPal, you name it. thanks very much Craig Bailey
  4. Hi, I just volunteered at AB100 Boston. Unfortunately, the city would not permit the Scout Store to operate during the festival. Could someone pick up a pair of AB100 patches for me at some of the remaining stops? Of course I'd pay for the items as well as shipping. Thanks very much Craig T. Bailey Hudson, NH
  5. They look OK to me. I'll tell ya what... the last two Camporee's I attended rained like the dickens, and I wished I had one of those nylon "supplex" shirts!
  6. Bando - There is no such thing as a "Scoutmaster Only" item. The Scoutmaster that decrees such a "rule" simply doesn't get it. Feel free to wear the Campaign hat with pride. The campaign hat has been recognized around the workd as a "Boy Scout" image for over a hundred years. People think "Scouts" NOT "SCOUT MASTER" when they see a campaign hat. That SM needs a reality check.
  7. I've been trying to determine this myself. I'll wear the Campaign when it's nice out, and there is an outdoor function happening, but I'd never bring it on a weelend outing for fear of destroying it. I've recently purchased the "Commissioner" baseball cap that I've been wearing to Commish mtgs, and RT. For activities I wear my WB hat, but when I get my beads that will be retired. I've been considering the brown wool wide brimmed hat, our council store still has several of these in stock. My thought is that the brown felt hat would work in all conditions: meetings, rain, winter
  8. I agree, this isn't the military. But as a Commissioner I do recomend to the leaders that I serve they wear their uniform correctly, because the uniform is one of the 8 methods of scouting. Things that were never intended to be worn on the uniform shouldn't be. That's why I asked about vintage CSP wear, since they were once intended for uniform wear. Thanks everyone!
  9. Cringe they will! LOL! What good is a patch, if it never sees the light of day again? Granted... if this was serial number 00001, and it was still in shrinkwrap, then I suppose it would find it's way onto my patch blanket. Thanks for your thoughts everyone. craig
  10. Hi. I've recently purchased a vintage CSP that has been obsoleted. Although there is no written policy that I can find... What are folks' thoughts on "Once official uniform, always official uniform" with regards to antique insignia? thanks craig
  11. Hi all, I have registered at PTC for week 2. I've rented a car from the Albequerqe International Airport. Is anyone looking to carpool from AIA to philmont? Thanks Craig
  12. Hi Nike: There is a jacket sized NESA emblem that is approved for Red-Jac Shirt wear, and could also be sewn onto the red nylon wind breaker. Recently the National supply came out with a series of "jumbo" rank emblems, roughly the size of a dinner plate. They were intended as gifts or craft projects such as the section of a quilt, or throw pillows, and of course blankets and equipment. I'm sure some have even used them in creation of some very nice ceremonies for courts of honor. If that is the emblem you are speaking of, then, no - it is not intended for wear on the center of
  13. I'm guessing the full medical form is even MORE stringent than the "Class III" that I needed to take WoodBadge this year?
  14. Excellent tips! Thanks everyone! This PTC trip still is in the pre-planning stages, I am just doing some due-diligence to determine the true feasibility. The only course that I'm interested in is the New "Unit Commissioner - Helping Units Succeed" conference. It looks really great, and to top it off they will be holding a College of Commissioner Science on the last day. Like many, I've rented many cars for family trips over the years, as the "trip" was the adventure - not the destination. That's sorta why I'm considering amtrack, since to me Philmont would be the "adventu
  15. Hi to the forum. I've been considering attending the Philmont Training Center for a weeklong conference. I've never been to Philmont before, and would be coming from New England. I'm curious about travel arraignments. I think I have a plan, but am wondering if anyone would share their experiences... Here's my first rough draft: Airfare from Boston to Chicago Amtrack from Chicago to Ranton NM The Philmont bus from Ranton to Philmont. Any ideas? Remember, I won't be going with a unit. Just by myself. Thanks
  16. From the Philmont course schedule page: Wood Badge Refresher This course is designed to introduce the skills of Wood Badge for the 21st Century to those who have completed previous Wood Badge editions. You will learn the basic models and terms used in Wood Badge for the 21st Century and understand the alignment of these skills with our youth leadership training. Open to all who have completed a past Wood Badge course. July 11-17
  17. like i said, "I believe the current insignia guide has dropped the measurement." Thanks FScouter for confirming my suspicion with a date reference.
  18. Actually, a previous edition of the uniform and insignia guide said the world crest patch was to be placed 3" below the seam of the shoulder on the shirt. Technically, this is close to centered, but when you start getting into the larger shirt sizes "centered" is not correct. I believe the current insignia guide dropped the 3" measurement.
  19. Well, thanks everyone for posting. As the OP, I'd like to report that my first weekend of woodbadge training was fantastic! Every post so far have been exactly right on point. Some things that I'd like to add to the list: 1. Don't bring too many clothes. We were in our "Class A" from friday morning to sunday. Our course included a "class B" shirt for use on Sunday. I was, however, happy I brought BOTH my Class A shirts. 2. A good size daypack (big enough for a 3-ring) is key. 3. One of my patrol members had fashioned up a "flash card" flip book with various Scouting oaths,
  20. OK, so, if I am reading the National Supply website correctly, there are now (3) "Official" uniform shirts: 1. The Centennial Uniform (in 2 types of fabric) 2. The Dela renta Uniform (is this the "ODL"?) 3. The new poly/wool uniform. So conceivable a unit could have 3 different shirts in amongst the boys and adult leaders.
  21. There really isn't anyone "Over" any volunteer scouters. The rule is: whomever has the ability to reccomend a person has the ability to remove a volunteer. The Troop CC does not have the ability to reccomend or remove the SM. Only the Chartered Organization Head (or the Chartered Organization Representative) has the ability to remove. So, unless the CC is also the COR, the CC is not "over" anyone, including the SM.
  22. Is this possbibly the "Year of Celebration Leadership Award" that the Centenial website is purporting that will be available starting in September? The PDF that National has with the requirements is here:http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/sitefiles/1000/YourSource/PlanningTools/A_Year_of_Celebration/BSA_Year_Patch_Earning.pdf BUT - They never show a picture of the award patch.
  23. I think GernBadge is a great idea in concept, but I fear that a one-week crash course that runs through all the scout skills would too much for complete newbies, and they would become overloaded with training, and get nothing out of it by getting too much thrown at them. These skills that you would be teaching, the trainers themselves have been learning them over the course of a lifetime, and you did not pick them up in a week's time. I would urge GernBadge to be a week-long refresher course for the trainers. I suspect a course full of experienced outdoorspeople, who would rotate t
  24. Hi to the forum: Any of you wood-badgers have any good tips of gear that a trainee might want to bring to the training sessions? The list of "standard required items" is easily found, but I'm curious about hearing about some experience "wish i had: ____ when I was a trainee..." Thanks, craig
