I think this depends a lot on your location. In Colorado our pack has one campout usually the first weekend in october, and on in May. It often gets below 32 degrees. We give the families the option to stay for the day or spend the night, as you never know some years it is really hot, this year (10/6/18) it got down to 38 degrees, but here you can rent outdoor gear, and many families have it. We do also have the stipulation that you can not have a heater in your tent, so often Webelos boys will sleep different tents from their parents so that they can get the award.
