  1. @Kahuna - You need to put a spoiler alert message on your post. The ending of Ender's Game really blew me away. I lived in Greensboro, NC for a while and thought is was really cool to drive down Lake Brandt Rd from time to time. It is a great book but I never thought of it as a leadership learning guide in any way. Has anyone read The Killer Angles by Micheal Shaara. It is a good look at several different leadership styles.
  2. I will have agree with Johnponz on one thing and that is creating a "unit mentor" position is doing the same thing just calling it something different. I am both a SM and a UC for a different troop. When asked to be a UC I said I did not think I could because of what is stated in the Fieldbook for Unit Service. But I was told by our DC and DE that is was OK as long as I was not the UC for my own unit. We asked the same question at an Area Commissioner conference and the regional people told us that the DC and DE were correct, so that is what I am going with.
  3. @johnponz That was the reference that I mentioned when I said I could not do it. The DC and DE said that it meant that a commissioner could not be registered with the unit they serve except in a committee member position. In November of last year at the Area 7 Commissioner Conference this was brought up we were told the same thing by the region guys. So that is what I am going with but I read it the same way you do. The wording makes it seem that a UC can not be registered with any unit.
  4. Thanks for the comments. I just noticed that I wrote roll instead of role when I started this, I must have be hungry when I did that. When I was asked if I was willing to be a UC I said that I would like to but could not since I was serving as a SM. But I was told that I could not serve as UC for my own unit but could for another unit. My troop meets on a Tuesday and the one I UC for meets on a Monday. I think that as long as I only have one unit things will be fine. It is fun to learn a new aspect of the program. My troop has some great ASMs and a good committee right
  5. Thanks! I stumbled across some posts on knots and that seemed to be a very heated topic. I was surprised some many people take that so seriously. I am looking forward to being a part of the discussions on here.
  6. Hello everyone, I was really active in Scouting as a youth, Eagle, Vigil, Summer Camp Staff and all of that good stuff. After being away from the program for years I became involved with a local troop and am currently serving as their Scoutmaster. And since I seem to think I had some extra free time I just started working as a Unit Commissioner. My wife is an understanding and patient person. It has been informative and fun to read through the forums and learn from everyone here. I think it is important to keep up with the changes in the program. I am afraid of being one of thos
