All I can say is "Amen."

Were the boy's parents candid about his condition when he started Scouts, or were you left to figure out that he was "different" on your own? Some things are more obvious than others; the kid that may seem to be a "problem" might have something more going on. I saw it all too often in our Pack.

It's unfair to those adults who give of their time and efforts to present Scouting, but who usually lack the awareness training or educational credentials to deal with these situations. It's just the way of the world unfortunately. As another poster observed, most Scouts and Scouters are simply unprepared to deal with things like this.

I'm a new ASM, and haven't done any Scouting since I was a boy. I would love to hear all of your stories, recommendations, and advice. Thanks!

We do it, and it works out great. The relatively small number of adults all get along well for the most part. We work together and set a good example for the boys.

Good question, with no single answer. It is an extremely frustrating problem, and unfortunately in my experience I have seen it drive away some good leaders and almost ruin a unit.

Best advice, based on experience, is to be very candid, frank, and open. Make the whole issue transparent to all parties concerned, especially Council. Get your UC involved from the start.
