  1. If the vote reaffirms the policy, the fight ends for me today. There's not much more I'm willing to do to try and help get the BSA on the right path.
The problem is that the current policy and the resolution are bad. The current policy just sucks and anyone found/reported to be a homosexual can be kicked out of the program. The resolution sends a horrible message to our youth that they are good enough to achieve the highest rank in scouting but because they are homosexual they are not good enough to then serve our youth once they age out. Disgusting.
  2. So a gay Scout can stay in, possibly a gay Venturer (I assume). They can earn Eagle (or Quartermaster, etc.). They can have the highest rank and honor - but they can't be an adult volunteer.

That don't make no sense. He's a whole enough person to Eagle but not to volunteer?

This change, if approved, will call the bluff (or non-bluff) of the Chartered Orgs who threatened to pull if any out gays were allowed in. It will also continue to piss off adults and corporations who see BSA as still discriminating. So once again, BSA has sort of done nothing, if approved.

  3. I'll just leave this here.

Ugh. At least its [some] progress and the stupid local option idea got tossed? BSA.. always following, never leading (as an organization).
  4. I totally disagree that this will be of no effect....

First not supporting scouts at the national level, will produce lawsuits at the lower level where there is far less safety without the numbers of a huge national organization.

I venture that there are tons of little pro gay groups that are ready and waiting to attack at the lower level, knowing they will win not because of being right, but because there are far less funds... And ability to defend themselves.

Many churches that are CO's will drop the charter... Notice that this decision has been made right after the rechargers are completed... That gives the troops time to find other organizations before time to recharter.

On a personal level, we have already been told to expect a drop of the charter if this decision is made and also as a committee chair, I am having to make the personal decision to belong to a private organization that no longer supports the familly values that I beleive to be critical.

My son saw the article and has already stated he is rethinking his membership in the organization and he is a dream scout who lives every aspect of the law and oath...

No sir, I totally disagree... I hear the same bell tolling. When this is over, we may wind up with an irrelevant organization like others out there.... It used to be a great organization also....

"No sir, I totally disagree... I hear the same bell tolling" Because BSA is doing oh so great in the membership numbers currently.

  6. So far my 2 kickback errors were:

WARNING: Local tours require at least ONE ADULT who has completed the Youth Protection Training.

WARNING: Effective for tours on 1/1/2009 at least one adult must have completed Planning and Preparing for Hazardous Weather Training.

However, the permit did have hazardous weather on it. Still waiting on council to approve or kick back again.

  7. Why is the new hazardous weather course referred to 3 different names depending where you look?

    E-Learning = Weather Hazards

Tour Permit Training section = Hazardous Weather

Tour Permit autoresponder = Planning and Preparing for Hazardous Weather Training

Why can't the Tour Permit and E-Learning be linked. Seems like a BSA ID should just about do everything needed here. Ask for the BSA ID of an adult on this tour permit. Then link to their online training. The only one I needed for a permit that you can't do online is BALOO. Which brings up the next part of this rant.. when is BSA going to do away with asking for names when doing training and ask for IDs and maintain national training records?

And if this tour permit comes back one more time asking for Hazardous Weather and YP, both of which are on the printout of it..... poor DE.

  8. We and a troop are chartered by a United Methodist church. I'm a member of the church.

For the past ~20 years, our COR has been the church secretary. We had the same secretary for 19 years and when she was training her replacement, she told her all she had to do was sign the adult applications. Now the new secretary is leaving and I'd like to be able to voice an opinion on what I would like from the new COR. We do not have a rule in place that the COR has to be a staff member, just the way we've done it the past 20 years.

    Who is typically your COR?

How do you (or would you if you could) go about choosing a new COR? What are you looking for in one?

I know I have my ideas about what I want, but finding the right person that would be able to somewhat

do a more active job and also want to do it may be difficult.

  9. Buffalo Skipper,

I agree with the need to build relationships between the scouts and the church. That is one of the reasons I am our CC. My wife (our Children and Family Chair at the church) and I have discussed this at length. Scouts should be viewed as one of the ministries of the church.

Our church also sponsors a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. One of our MOPS rules is that their Chair must be a member of the church. Its a ministry of the church and it should operate itself with the rules and guidance of our church. Same thing should apply to our scout groups (I can only speak for my church). The CC should be a member of the church and have the church's interest also in mind. The CM, I can go either way on, I'd prefer a member but I wouldn't go as far as making it a rule.

To make this all work you of course need a IH and COR that understand and care about scouting. I'm working on those.

  10. We are chartered by the church, we do not have a Methodist Men's group (thats a different discussion).

We the pack take care of our own finances. We pay for our charter. We even pay the church for childcare during our pack meetings. I (as Pack Committee Chair and member of the church) would welcome them to audit our books. I may be asking for that to actually happen this year. They own the pack, they need to pay greater attention to it. Our COR is the uninterested church's business manager, working on fixing that also. We get the typical church support: space to have our meetings, place to store our stuff (being on the church's trustees I get to see both sides of that one), able to do Scout Sunday.
