  1. HD stands for Hornaday Awards

    http://www.usscouts.org/advance/Hornaday.asp

if i can get this Guy and his son out all i will have is one more bad apple left but you know what they say about 1 bad apple

with the 4 Eagle projects for his Hornaday Awards none of the boys wanted to help after the secound on and the father was getting nuts saying we were telling the kids not to help(NOT TRUE)but this is the kind of thing we go through with this guy and his son.

so now hes getting Eagle Palm BOR without the SMC

  2. lets see if i can shed some light on this a little more.

The scout in question is not in a crew nor a different council .

He and his father come from about 40 min. away to come to meetings.

But since Oct The scout hasnt showed up for any meetings but his father does and every time I ask about him I am told that he has to work on Mondays and he will not be making the meetings because of it.

Now as far as the scout goes he turns 18 in Sept.

He has more than enough merit badges to make his 9 palms.

He has his 4 eagle projects done for his HD Award

The scout doesnt care about any other scouts in his troop and will not help anyone with doing anything unless he is made by a leader and if your not watching he will just walk away.

    scoutldr

You ask How can a scout be awarded more MB and Palms if the unit is not filing Advancement Reports signed by the troop committee? Curious minds want to know. Sounds like fraud to me. I would also wonder if he's using registered MB counselors.

This is what im asking how can a scout go and do SMC & BOR with out even using the troop.

Is that all they need is somewhere to be chartered to get his palms. And just bypass the troop I dont think its right.

  3. From what you have posted, it seems to me that dad has used his position/standing in District to gain advantage for his son.

This is true its all about he and his son

On outings he will not even give rides to other scouts and his son shows the same attitude about other scouts like hes untouchable.

He has gone to council and tryed to bring trouble to our troop and he has many of times.

our troop has put together a district outing and got it passed through our DE and the dad being the district outing guy put a stop to it.

so to answer your question yes he sure does

  4. The Palm BOR still hasnt gone through yet and its been about 6 weeks

The father is at district level and has PULL

No one will even listen to what you have to say in regards to this person.

This leader has been causing nothing but problems for 2 years and its time for him to go.

Everything we do is told to council so they know every move we make which is fine but we cant even have a Committee meeting without Council knowing what happens.

As far as the scout he works and isnt able to attend the meetings so why should we recharter him so he can just come by for his BOR with District and not have anything to do with the troop

  5. i am new at the SM thing and i dont have a copy of Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures #33088?

i am looking into what i can do about this matter.

as far as the scout goes he lives somthing like 40 min.away from where we meet and he works on our meeting night.

one of the first requirements is to find a troop near your home.

he has not been seen since Oct but his fother has been there and i have asked where his son was and all i get is he has to work so he wont be here.

  6. I have an Eagle Scout that came to me for a SMC and then as he was leaving he said he was going to have his BOR now.

I asked him where and i was told my father set it up with district and he left.

Now he had another BOR without a SMC and tryed to hand it in to our Advancement Person but it was signed by the District so they were told to have district hand it in befor i was told about the BOR.

now the question is who is at falt the district for not checking or the scout for trying to go around the Troop?

and is this grounds for not rechartering?

  7. Hi All

A little more info on this topic

I am the CC for my troop.

There is one guy putting together a No Competence or confidence Board together to get me out of the troop for what reason I dont know why other than i speak my mind when it comes to team work with the troop or if there is something I feel is wrong I will speak up and tell that person.

    For example

We were at summer camp for 2 weeks some for just one week.

Every one was told that before anyone leaves camp the camp will be cleaned as if we were going home and no one else was staying

One leader on our last day of camp got up @ 5am packed up all his gear and was getting the last of it in his car when I woke up and seen him getting ready to leave so I got another leader up to tell him and he stopped him from leaving. Yelling that we need to clean this camp up before anyone leaves.

The Leader picked up 2 patrol boxes put them by the trailer and jumped in his van and took of leaving the rest to the other leaders.

This kind of thing was brought up at the committee meeting I voiced my opinion that no one should leave camp till everything is finished and ready to go.

Dont just get your stuff and leave and leave everything for the rest of the leaders and scouts to do.

Prior to this about 6 months I was on his sons Eagle B.O.R. His son was postponed for 1 week till he finished something the B.O.R. felt he needed to do.

The father got Council involved made a big deal out of it.

The head of Advancement from council told the B.O.R. to handle it after it was explained to him.

Everyone talked after the B.O.R. and figured it was over (DONE).

The father of the scout has never let it go.

So I voiced my opinion at the committee meeting about people not doing their fair share of work in the troop.

Things I had said were not just aimed at this one leader it was at everyone that just sat around while the same people everyday did everything. So now I have one leader putting together a no confidence Board to have me removed from the troop.

    A little of me background

I have been in scouting since 2000 I have been a Cub Scout leader then a Boy Scout leader.

CC for the cub scouts for 2 years after I was in boy scouts.

CC for the boy scouts, Merit badge councilor, run outdoor leader training for the Council,

Trainer for the Cub Scout leaders, every scout in my troop knows who I am and I will help every one of them at anytime and they know that.

Some of my Scouts I have even coached in tee ball

Hell I even made my own Knot book and have given it out all over the world via the Internet.

I dont know what else I can do and still I am being told there is going to be a No Competence or confidence Board to have me removed from the troop.

  8. i need to know What a No Competence or no confidence Board is?

For what reason can one be put together?

    Who can sit on it?

Does the committee chairman have to be notified?

Can just anyone put a No Competence Board together?

    Thank you

    Mr.Maynard

  9. I need your help!!!!!!!!!

What is a No Competence Board?

For what reason can one be put together?

    Who can sit on it?

Does the committee chairman have to be notified?

    Mr.Maynard

  10. O.G.E

I have read the link that you posted

Question: For the Star, Life, and Eagle Scout ranks, how is "Be active in your troop and patrol" defined?

Answer: A Scout is considered to be active in his unit if: He is registered in his unit (registration fees are current). He has not been dismissed from his unit for disciplinary reasons.

He is engaged by his unit leadership on a regular basis (Scoutmaster conference, informs the Scout of upcoming unit activities, through personal contact, and so on).

Ok my question is Lets take life for this the requirements go like this:

    1. Be active in your troop or patrol for at least 6 months as a Star Scout.

If you are not there how can you advance?

    2. Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life.

    3. Earn five more merit badges (so that you have 11 in all), including any three more from the required list for Eagle. (A Scout may choose any of the 15 required merit badges in the 12 categories to fulfill this requirement.)

    4. While a Star Scout, take part in service projects totaling at least 6 hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster.

Scout is never around (how can this requirement happen)

    5. While a Star Scout, serve actively for 6 months in one or more of the troop positions of responsibility listed in requirement 5 for Star Scout (or carry out a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project to help the troop).

Scout is never around (how can this requirement happen)

    6. Take part in a Scoutmaster conference and Board of Review.

You cannot do this without requirements #1,4 & 5

    7. Complete your board of review.

Please dont take this the wrong way.

I dont understand how he can advance if he is not active refer to requirement #1

    Mr.Maynard

  11. Yes I am the CC of my troop. By the time that the recharter came out he had just paid his fees for everything the guy who had the job of the recharter had held off giving it to us till his buddy had paid up for everything by this time it was to late.

That is why it is no longer his job it the troop. so what is done is done for this year.

Now you ask if the scout has a discipline issue yes he does he is 15 6-8tall and 290lbs and he uses it to bully the other boys. So we always have to baby sit this scout. (What a Pain) His father is a registered leader but doesnt go on any campouts.

    This will all be changing.

Dont take all this the wrong way this is just 1 scout 1 leader that this is all about.

This guy can find a loophole in anything.

We have no problems with any other boys or leaders as far as the by laws in the troop.

We stick to them and that is that but when you have someone going around the back way with help from another leader (His Buddy) I need to make sure that door is shut.

I try to keep insight that this is all about the boys and if the Scout wanted to become active I am all for that.

After all thats what it is all about!

  12. Hi all

    Ok lets get this right!

Maybe I should have been a little clearer.

The leader & scout in question have been gone for 2 years and have been on the charter yes.

The reason they are on the charter is that his buddy was the one doing the recharter and just put him on. Neither the Scout nor the leader paid for recharter his buddy just turned it in with out him paying for it. So without knowing about it the Troop ended up paying for it.

After the charter came out this year after all is done we proceeded to look it over and found their names on it again. I had asked the person who was doing the Charter why he was on there still after 2 years of being inactive the reply was he wanted to be. At that point I had asked the person that was doing the recharter to step down and appointed another Committee member to the job. (So thats how they are on the Charter.)

After I had asked him to step down he called the leader in question and told him what happen at the committee meeting.

He showed up at our next outing and talked to the SM and promised to get his son active and to pay any owed money to the troop the SM agreed to this as long as he became active again.

They showed up to 2 meetings and now they are not here again but he did pull a fast one and paid for his sons summer camp in full while paying the troop back for the 2 recharter that was paid for by the troop ok he caught up on everything.

Now we have not seen the scout in 2 months but he will be here for our summer camping trip. The only reason the father did this is so he can go on the trip! After the trip we will not see him till next spring just in time for summer camp.

  13. What is an active Scout?

Per our Bylaws it goes like this

    ACTIVE SCOUTS DEFINED

A scout is active when he attends a minimum of 1 scouting event a month and 1 scouting campout per calendar year. Inactive scouts will not advance in rank until he fulfills the active scout criteria. (Example: A scout wishes to advance from Star to Life Scout. He must have attended a campout within the previous year and have made at least 1 event each month over the past 6 months.

    What is an active Leader?

    Active Troop Leaders Defined

This is a trained and registered leader who assumes a leadership position on the committee and had attended at least one meeting per month and one campout in a calendar year. Leaders who do not meet this requirement will be put on inactive status and removed from the leader roster.

    Now with that said

Being Committee chairman for my troop I put together a excel sheet with all it boys info on it & a leaders sheet calling it an Active Roster for both boys and leaders.

If at anytime the committee decides that they need to go over the rosters and get people off that are not active per the Bylaws of the troop this is allowed.

(This is about every 3 months that this is done.)

There is a leader and a Scout that have not done anything with the troop for about 2 years no meeting no anything.

Now all the sudden its time for summer camp and he is trying to get the scout active so he can go.

The scoutmaster tells him he has to be active in order to go to camp or advance in rank. The Scout started showing up for meetings became active and paid for his summer camping now he is back on the inactive list.

The scouts father is the type of guy that will come into a meeting and start yelling at anyone who will listen to him about how wrong his son is being treated and that we are doing him an injustice by not letting him advance in rank and not letting him hold a senior position.

How can you let him hold a position and not be there?

  14. What you need to do is check out as many Troops as there is in your area.

(Look at the Bylaws of each troop at least you will know what to expect)

Then talk to parents and leaders to get a feel about the troop and stories about the troop.

In our troop we have Female leaders that are trained and are welcome on campouts.

It is up to them if they want to go or not.(there is no rule saying they cant)

B.S.A. tells us they are welcome so that tells you that you cant stop them.

Some troops will let the female leaders go on campouts just to make it hard on them so they wouldnt want to go anymore.

In my opinion I think that you should join the troop of your sons choice.

Sign up as a leader and get trained for what ever they offer

This way you know what to do and if the other leaders are not teaching the boys the right way.

I say this from experience I have went through all the training and I am the Committee Chairman for our troop.

We have females on the committee and they are also MB councilors for the boys.

If they wish to go on camp outs Hikes and so on they would be welcome

    Mr. Maynard.

  15. Is there a way to recognize a Leader for training boys for a merit badge like first aid?

If a boy uses the first aid to help save someone life?

I think the leader who took the time should receive something for his

ability to teach the boys the right way. To teach them to stay calm and to know what to do at a time when there training is needed.

    Mr.Maynard

  16.

    gwd-scouter

Our troop has about 23 leaders and about 43 scouts. We are blessed to have a good group of people to help with the troop our SM is a Chef, we have a sheriff, firemen, I am a drafts man I gave a lot of time & made a knot Book (right & Left Handed) to help the boys. In other words we give a lot to our troop. A lot of time and energy just as everyone does.

This Blue & Gold we have about 13 boys crossing over to the boy scouts and 3 Leaders are coming up with them. They already know about the training that they need in order to go camping with us so they are already signed up for the training.

All of our leaders are invited to the committee meetings that we have so everyone has a say in what goes on with our troop so that no one feels they are not included in what happens with the troop. I think that is why we have such strong leadership.

As every troop we have our disagreements but we deal with them thru the committee meetings and let the committee fix the problem if not we work together to fix the problem.

I think that if our leaders are happy then we have good leadership.

We are planning a leader outing just for the leaders and new leaders that are coming up to the troop so that they can see just how we work as a team and do everything we can to help each other with what ever is needed.

We do this so the new leaders have the opportunity to ask questions about what ever they like. I think that is the reason why we have such a strong leadership.

  17. AwHeck

Let me clarify what I had meant when I stated that no woman go on camp outings with us.

If any leader doesnt have the full leader training that is required by the troop no leader with out the training can go camping with the boys. I didnt mean just the woman!

The woman that we have in our troop that have been there for at least 4 or more years decided not to go to training. (They are just not the camping type)

I know a lot of woman that are CM,SM,CM& CC and praise them for the excellent job that they do in scouting.
