  1. I am always on the lookout for uniforms for the uniform bank. I find them at rummage sales, garage sales and thrift shops.

Last week I found two shirts and a pair of pants at a thrift shop. 75 cents for the lot. Not a bad deal? Mebbe.

Turns out that whomever attached the patches used a glue of somesort. I've tried steam, boiling, and every solvent in my basement but the patches remain firmly attached.

Don't these people think when they're gluing on a patch that someday, someone will need to remove it?

  2. Call it what you will, you're still doing the Bob White side step. If first I say this and you show me to be wrong, I'll say that I really meant to say something else.

    Buh-bye.

  3. "Hazing is something that is done with the INTENT of purposefully injuring an individual, be it physically or emotionally."

Since the intent of neither a snipe hunt nor singing for your lost goods is to injure anyone, it cannot be hazing.

On the other hand, boxing is hazing which explains why it is not permitted.

Cheerleading at football games must also be considered hazing as we intend to demoralize the opponents by saying, "Our team is better than your team."

  4. Gee. . . when I "click here" it takes me back to the previous page. I looked at the html for that page and the "click here" link simply executes some Java Script to go back one page, the same as the "back button."

Do you have Java Script enabled?

  5. "It only needs to be humiliating to one scout to fit the definition."

So if one Scout finds it humiliating to be brought up in front of his peers to recieve his advancement recognition that is hazing and should be discontinued?

  6. "What if you had a mentally challenged scout, and he lost some items, would he have to sing to get them back?"

Mentally challenged? Does that mean someone taking AP classes.

  7. "I just saw your post! How do you figure if the others find it amusing it is hazing?"

That's the definition of hazing. Forcing someone to do something, usually humiliating, for the amusement of others.

The thing is that those who can't learn to deal with a little bit of humiliation are going to have trouble later in life. Life is fraught with humiliating experiences which range from locking your keys in your car to having your Visa rejected when you're on a 'big date' to telling everyone that you got the new job only to discover that you didn't.

  8. Ed, do the others in the troop find the singing amusing? If so, it is hazing. FWIW, I say keep it up. A little humilation goes a long way to correcting negative behavior.

Back in the day, when the teacher administered swats in front of the class, that served to warn everyone else and to keep the offender from offending again.

  9. "I hate to be disagreeable but adopting or adapting a hat that is part of the Boy Scout uniform or looks like the Boy Scout uniform is not to allowed."

I'll be disagreeable right back. Your friend BW has often said, that if it isn't stamped BSA, it isn't part of the uniform. OD pants that I buy at Old Navy aren't uniform pants so a campaign hat that I get the Marine Corps uniform shop isn't part of the Boy Scout uniform.

AS BP pointed out, the Montana Peak Hat existed long before the Army adopted it which was before the Boy Scout adopted it.

FScouter said, "is in violation of the spirit of the rules."

Sorry, if memory serves, I've tried that arugment in the past and and aforementioned BW has pointed out that it isn't our job to judge the spirit of the rules, only to abide by the rules as they are written.

  10. The simple "USMC" or "Mom" tatoo is one thing. I think that people that decorate 50% of their body with injected ink have something wrong in their head. Problably the same issues had by people who have repeated cosmetic surgery.

  11. Aside from the power grabbing problems, there is nothing wrong with having two events in one weekend. Life is filled with choices and people need to make them. Do I ask Becky or Suzy to the dance? Do I want pizza or a sub for lunch? Do I like the colonial or the tudor house?

Our PLC does long range planning but many events pop up, usually because an adult was presented with an opportunity. For example, this past winter one of our adults was offered a block of tickets to a basketball game. If it went to the plc for discussion, the opportunity would have gone away. An email went out, "First 20 Scouts to respond can go to the b-ball game" and we were off and running.

  12. "Sure you can opt to wear blue campaign hats or pink campaign hats as part of a Venturing uniform but the BSA campaign hat belongs to the Boy Scout program."

As I said before, there's nothing to stop you from adopting an olive campaign hat that doesn't say BSA inside of it.

  13. "In spite of my opinion, I don't think anyone should be judged adversely because of them."

Why not? It goes to character. Just like whether a person goes to church or likes cats.

  14. " the same would apply to the Campaign hat, which is part of the Boy Scout uniform."

I would think that would only be true if they wore BSA campaign hats. They could buy some of that fellow's navy blue hats or they could get Marine Corps issue field hats (that's the Marine Corps designation for them). I've found source for those at a low price.
