  1. It is very nice of Chinese youth labor to work for hours a day in state of the art factories, with excellent safety records for tiny wages creating uniforms to support a group their leaders ban them from joining.

I am surprised BSA uniform shirts do not come with a tag announcing this, just like they used to be proud of Made in America. Why would they not want to yell it from the tree tops? Or if the shirt was in someway better due to being manufactured in China have a tag saying, "This BSA uniform shirt is 30% cheaper than if it was made in America."

  2. What better way to break the 1949 Communist Party ban on Scouting than to show them the money. Huge number of potential new scouts there.

Child slave labor is a huge well known issue. I would expect an organization of BSA's caliber to issue a statement that the factory has been inspected for humane labor issues and subject to periodic inspections. BSA should of expected this issue would not go unnoticed. BSA should of been proactive about the change in vender location. They were not.

  3. I have seen 3 Eagle Awards. I think she is only the third in town to receive one.

There was a state ceremoney for all the girls earning gold in the state.

I think her Gold Award Advisor and the (town chairman?)will do the talking part. They have asked me to select a date and location to present her gold award.

I hope to book the local library room.

I hope to put out a table of food. A light lunch with desert.

    Flowers would be nice too.

I am looking for something to make the event shine.

  4. The new uniform pants have an attached black belt. The pants also have aditional belt loops. Is the green belt with the gold buckle supposed to be worn on top of the other belt? Please explain this double belt loop system.

    Thank you.

  5. anarchist's "... helps our boys to design a working calendar ..." Excellent. That must be a key to sucess. The Troop that distribuites a clear Calendar with Meetings and Events first gets my scout with an active parent. I will plan my family calendar around scout activities if a timely calendar is provided.

fgoodwin's "... because of facility limitations, camping trips will be filled on a first-come first-served basis." That seems reasonable. As a parent I would like to see a sign up sheet for each camp out with dates listed. Fourty numbered lines if 40 slots are alloted. At the end could be spaces for extra names if those who sign up can not attend. I would expect to pay a $5 deposit due per person by or at the next monthly meeting to hold my place or the next person in line with $5 gets it. Even for events that do not cost. The $5 can be reimbursed when I show up. If I do not show up I loose it.

Everyone camping should be on the job roster. Note: Sitting Around the Fire is not a job on the roster.

If the facility holds 100 and 200 want to go have two sign up sheets for two different days.

I want a parent camping with my scout especially at first. "No parents allowed" would be part of my considerations for choosing a troop.

  6. I would first question that the youth over charged the cannon. Was there a previous charge that had not been ignighted? So his was, unknown to him, the second charge? Metal fatigues and gets invisible little cracks. Old firearms should be x-rayed to see if they are still serviceable. Where was this cannon aimed? The film canister was not the best idea. This horrible incident brings up the whole topic of scout safety. From what I have seen the no pointing things no laser tag rule is a feel good measure that does not accomplish boy scout goals.

Many of the cub scouting events I have been at felt like running the gauntlet of unsafety. Not unlike other youth events like for church and 4H. It seems like the event is not complete unless they have handed 7 year old's long pointed sticks, walked them along the side of a busy non sidewalked road, and had them clamber up a danger rock slide. 7 year olds do not really know where the needle they used to string popcorn ended up. How many were lost in the school cafeteria? The camp bus someone mentioned traveling with scouts walking on both sides of a pot holed road is an excellent example. This for me means that I have to be involved to protect my scout and any others I can prevent from danger. You have heard of uniform police. I feel like safty police. Nobody can take as good care of our childen as us ourselves. We can be there to grab the child out of the way as the bus passes. To unplug one end of the electrical cord before they toss the next into the pool. To keep the scouts away from the kerosean soaked fire pit. And to reremind them don't cut with your knife unless others are safe from your movements. Nobody else can do that job as well as a parent. A scout leader only has 2 eyes and multiple duties. As the scout gets older they learn on their own to stay away from most dangerous situations. Would you rather have a child in an Easter egg hunt where the person in charge says, "There are enough eggs for everyone. 1st grade and under walk first. In 2 minuites 2nd grade walk." Or "Run!"

Safety needs to be a bigger part of the scouting I have seen. Not the Rules Rules Rules safety but the use your head and think Safety.

For the "dangerous" activities I know they are following the rules (BB and archery). It its the safe activities (walking down the summer camp road) I worry about.

  7. Tonight I was able to ask my question at a pack meeting. (All the popcorn sellers got a matchbox and major sellers could win a prize, and they got wraped pinewoods, after they made an edible for the birds tree to put at the local nursing home) You all were right. The center was an L for Lions the sponsoring organization. The segments were for everything the scouts did during the year. The Scout Master came right out and said they are not really supposed to be there but that for time in memorial that is how this pack has done it. He said when they go to council events, council does not really like it but that it was tradition. He said the scouts were earning them and they were holding them for them. I told him that for Christmas my Cub Scout was getting the red scout blanket and we could sew them on it. I don't think my son could pull off being the only Scout in town with a red felt patch vest. He already has hair to his waist so I don't want to add to any differences. I do not expect the pack to ever do a uniform inspection. I think he also owns and wears to meetings the only pair of cub pants in town. Socks too. Are they allowed to put pins on their hats? We have some. I wish someone would ask me to contribuite to a gift for the Wolf leader. I would suggest a gift certificate to the Scout store so she can get a shirt. I think there are 13 Wolfs. There are no Bears. The pack had issues with them when they were Tigers and they all left. What a great time to correct the placement of the shirt pizza salads. I've learned from Girl Scouts that when sewing on patches avoid the folds if you ever want to fold the thing again. Like for a suitcase to travel to a Scout event. I will put my Scouts salad and personal pizza on a red scout blanket. When he is a Boy Scout I will sew them on the back of his merit sash. Maybe since they don't have Bears, so there are only a few older boys that will be leaving shortly to move up that we have an opportunity that the non official patches can be corrected. Maybe if we show the blanket to the troop they will correct the salad on the shirts.

  8. I would think that a Boy Scout in a room of Cub Scouts would be like moths to a flame. What great publicity for creating future Boy Scouts. If I was cub master I would maybe introduce him to the group and direct any questions they have about Boy Scouts to him. If he has lots of homework he would still probably attract a following once the cubs knew he was a boy scout. As long as he is kind to the Cubs I don't see a down side.

  9. Opps. I was unclear in my question. This is below the temporary patch area. More like on the belly. I did ask the scout but he was shy and the program we were at got noisy and I was unable to continue my question. All of his awards looked perfectly positioned so I'm guessing that what ever this was he was not wearing it incorectly.

  10. A cub scout in a blue uniform had an interesting circle of patches/badges on his uniform shirt. Under the right pocket there was a circular patch with concentric circle sections about 4 rows. I have seen no mention of these on any of the uniform charts. What could it be?

  11. Thank you for your replies.

The changing system of badges is what made it confusing.

My son is working on Wolf. The Tiger badge that goes on the back of the pawprint recognition bead holder sticks on real good and won't come off. So I purchased a second one at the scout store for his shirt. The tiger recognition beads I guess can no longer be worn on his belt. The tiger triangle I placed at the 6 O'clock position. Now that he has earned the Bobcat that was sewn at the 12:00 positon. The chart I have from online shows the wolf at the 9:00 and the bear at the 3:00.

Not having to worry about the tiger strip I placed the Recruiter strip right under the pocket and did not leave space for the tiger strip as all the Recruiter strip placement pictures show.

The boys I saw Sunday must also be between badge systems. They had only the 9, 12 and 3 o'clock badges. So they must of earned the tiger strip not diamond. And I was thinking, "Wow, a whole row of older scouts at the awards ceremoney and none were ever Tigers." smile. So this explains the "missing" patch on their uniforms.

At the award ceremoney my son was awarded the progress towards ranks button hanging bead holder. Already attached were two red beads. It is a huge den of about 15 working on wolf's. I'm not going to mention to the hardworking leader that the beads awarded to all 15 should of been yellow. I doubt anyone else will even notice.
