  • A Walk on the Wild Side

Saw this photo of two scouts who walked from Venezuela to Washington, DC to attend the Boy Scout Jamboree. Two years, more than 10,000 miles (200 Fifty Miler awards?).

sigh, nice to see properly worn neckers.

Obviously times have changed. 4 scouts were also the first to walk the entire length of the Appalachian Trail, even before it was complete. I think it was back in that time period as well. I guess adventures of today aren't what they used to be. I wonder if either adventure had two-deep leadership? The article doesn't say.

Wonder if their tour permit went for two years?

I don't think they needed a tour permit. They didn't apply until you hit 11,000 miles.

Why does everybody in pictures from that era look old...those scouts look mid 20s. Maybe they are.

No, they were 12 when they started. The two year trek must have been pretty hard on them.

My boys are being extra hyper today. I may a suggest a hike to Rio in the morning. Passports will be expensive.
